Originating from Norway, Andreas Engesvik’s body of work has been highly acclaimed and diverse, but always consistent and minimal. Chunk is no exception: a simple and beautiful vessel for illumination, available in both a marble and raw concrete finish. They are finished with either metal or copper insets to house the candle, and can be purchased in three differing sizes. As the candle burns, the light reflects in the copper giving a beautiful glow with an industrial yet romantic look.

The collection Mix & Match, designed by Brazilian designer Flavia Del Pra and manufactured for Gan, reinvents the classic mixing tray, innovating with traditional elements.“These trays can be used as fountains, as ancillary tables to serve and present the food and as pedestals to highlight a work of art or a beautiful plant,” says the designer. The Mix & Match trays are presented in nine different models with a copper frame that contains the pieces’ handcrafted ceramic bases. The different sizes and prints of this collection allow endless combinations, offering the possibility of personalising the space with its colours and geometries, always obtaining a sophisticated and cheerful result.Flavia Del Pra combines new technologies, for the design of the different prints, with manual processes. The collection represents the meeting of creativity and passion for the world of copper and ceramics.

Tadeas Podracky

Czech designer Tadeas Podracky is a young creative whose approach to work includes historical research of different techniques from around the world. For his latest project—Umbrella Table & Stool—he explored traditional Chinese crafts from the Yuhang region. This part of China is famous for its bamboo and bronze products, allowing the designer to centre his research on the oil-paper umbrella, leading him to apply this knowledge to his designs. All parts of the table use the shape of the umbrella, which the designer deconstructed and reassembled in a different order. The complex Chinese symbolism is very important to the project as the umbrella symbolises protection from the evil spirits and its circular nature stands for fullness, with the connotation of a beautiful life. DIY is an original and beautifully simple coat rack developed by Austrian product designer Philipp Divitschek, based in Vienna. As its name indicates, the design centres on the idea of building a minimalistic coat rack by oneself, using materials that can be found in regular home improvement stores. The challenge for Divitschek was to achieve a modern product with a professional appearance. The DIY coat rack is made using ordinary copper pipes and fittings - limiting the unions to 90 degree angles - and simple plumber tools, forming a functional and asymmetric structure with just three supporting points on the floor.

London based Blacksheep has unveiled The Gorgeous Kitchen, an all-day dining concept launched as part of a regeneration project at T2, Heathrow Airport, operated by HMSHost International. The Gorgeous Kitchen is just the type of beautiful and indulgent dining experience that modern travellers deserve to enjoy before they jet off.Blacksheep were involved with developing all aspects of the 360 degree brand experience, from the design of the identity through to the interiors. The restaurant’s interior evokes feelings of tranquillity, peace and calm, an escape within an escape. The layout of the restaurant itself is based on natural organisation and freedom of form. The introduction of delicate copper vinaigrettes helps connect the spaces from a central point, creating pockets of natural rest. Antique Murano glass shades appear to float effortlessly, complementing the calm atmosphere of the safe haven whilst giving it a certain ethereal quality.

Nika Zupanc is a young Slovenian designer whose designs give voice to the intuitive, eclectic and intimate, resulting in products that are highly expressive and distinctly feminine. The Palm Plate is a brass object designed by Ljubiana-based designer Nika Zupanc for Italian brand Ghidini 1961. The unique aspect of this remarkable brass plate is an explicit reference to Orientalism and all the decorative adventures that come with it. The spark of each fine line outlines the swaying palm fronds, evoking a sense of elusive timelessness that belongs only to places subjugated by the spell of endless summers. The Palm Plate makes a dramatic addition to a formal dinner table setting, but is just as wonderful for everyday use.

The Zwei21 Interioricity lamp was designed by Jasmin Kastner and Marc Joschko with the concept that electricity can be a dangerous and complicated technical thing, but on the other hand helps us operate many electrical devices to make our lives easier, from coffee makers to washing machines.Keeping this in mind, the two industrial designers from German studio Zwei21 developed this simple lamp combined with an extension cord.Coloured textile cables, plugs, lampshades and joints can be combined and placed in various constellations. The extension cord with the plug works as cable storage on the wall. The setting can either consist of one single cable or up to three cables from the joint. The ends can be equipped with electric plugs or LED lamps. All lamps and plugs can be hung or placed on a desk. Copper frames hold the lampshades in position.

Paul Loebach is a furniture and product designer based in New York City and Berlin. Paul’s background is in traditional woodworking, handed down from a lineage of family craftsman. He applies his hands-on material approach to a design philosophy that covers a range of industrially-manufactured objects from furniture and lighting to everyday household products.Paul’s design focuses on materials, experience and the emotive meaning of objects. His practice stems from a belief that each design presents a unique opportunity to invoke change, and to adapt objects to the functional needs of our ever-evolving lifestyles.Paul recently designed a new side table using copper tubing and a glass top. The tubes are cut, polished and lashed together with nylon ‘zip ties’.

Indian designers Akanksha Rathore and Shreelekha Laksmipathy recently developed the Dathu Collection, working closely with the artisans at local Reha village. Sandcasting and forging were the methods practised for knife making, which is the primary occupation of artisans at Reha. The idea behind the design was to harness the art of sand casting and forging, offering a rich and saleable product for both the artisans and the consumers. The design provides the artisan an opportunity to work on details and craft a product that highlights the ability and workmanship that goes into the product’s manufacture. The material choice was restricted to brass to impart rich colour and shine, with time adding an oxidized look, years after it is put to use.

Spiffy Lab12

Sparky Fire Starter If you’ve ever tried to light a fire in damp or windy conditions, you know how to start a fire with a gum wrapper and a battery. Spiffy Lab’s new fire starter works on the same principle, but it’s enclosed in a much more durable, safer-to-operate package. Inside the negatively-charged body of the device that looks like a high-end EDC pen (complete with knurled cap, clip and aluminium/copper material options) you’ll find two AAA batteries and a positively-charged copper tip hiding under the cap. Unscrew Sparky’s cap, touch the positive and negative “terminals” to steel (steel wool is included, but a gum wrapper will work) and the fire will start.Sparky features a solid copper conductor tip for optimal conductivity.
