MIZORAM SCHOOL ECO-CLUB ACTIVITIES REPORT, 2017-2018
National Green Corps’ Program was launched in Mizoram in the year, 2002-03 with Mizoram Pollution
Control Board as the State Nodal Agency (SNA). The programme has been successfully implemented and
expanded in the state henceforth till the reporting year with 1890 no. of school eco-clubs established in all
the 8 districts of the state as on the reporting date. Every year, annual eco-club activities has been compiled
by the SNA and submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India. This
year, the report has been prepared with the help of Mizoram ENVIS Centre.
During the reporting FY, 2017 – 2018, various environmental related activities were successfully
performed by Mizoram eco-clubs of Mizoram, based on the activities calendar, prepared and distributed to
all the eco-clubs by the SNA. This report contains brief highlights of some major activities undertaken are
indicated below:
A. JOINT ACTIVITIES WITH SNA AND ENVIS HUB
1. Eco-Clubs, SNA and ENVIS Hub attended National Green Tribunal - Eastern Zone Regional Conference
On Waste Disposal & Management:- Eastern Zone Regional Conference on ‘Waste Disposal and
Management’ was organized by National Green Tribunal, Eastern Zone, Kolkata during 9th-10th
September, 2017 at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Panjabari, Guwahati. The main objective of the
conference was to create awareness in respect of waste management in the north eastern region and to
provide students an exposure to the various aspects of waste disposal and waste management. The
Conference was attended by Pu R. C. Thanga, IFS (Rtd.). Chairman, Mizoram Pollution Control Board
and two other officials from ENVIS Centre, Mizoram Pollution Control Board namely Pi C.
Malsawmzuali, Information Officer and Pi B. Laldikzuali, I.T. Assistant assisted eight (8) Eco-club
students from four (4) different schools from Aizawl sponsored by Mizoram Pollution Control Board to

1st prize winner of Poster and Essay Writing competitions
Aizawl, bagged first prizes in Poster Making and Essay writing competitions, organized prior to the
conference. She was awarded with certificates and mementos for both the categories during the
National Conference held at Guwahati.
2. Observance of World Ozone Day, 2017
Mizoram State Pollution Control Board (SNA) in association with Mizoram ENVIS Hub organized
various activities for observation of World Ozone Day, 2017 as under- a. Poster Making and Slogan
Writing Competitions: As requested by the Central Ministry ENVIS Centre along with the host institute,
took initiatives and encouraged Eco-Clubs for organising poster making and slogan writing
competitions at their respective school and submit the best entries to Nodal Agency for onward
submission to MoEF&CC. Posters and slogans submitted by various schools were received by ENVIS
Team and further forwarded the soft copy of entries to MoEF&CC and hard copy to Regional Office,
MoEF&CC. Nine participants from Mizoram Eco-clubs have been awarded prizes by the MoEF & CC

3. Observance of World Environment Day by Aizawl Eco-Clubs, SNA and Mizoram ENVIS Hub:
World Environment Day, 2017 with the theme ‘Connecting People to nature’ was observed on 5th June,
2017 (Monday) by Aizawl Eco-Clubs with SNA and Mizoram ENVIS Hub by conducting a seminar cum
cleanliness drives at Hmuifang Tlang. Hmuifang Tlang is an amazing hill station, one of the most
popular tourist spots in Mizoram and is located about 50km from Aizawl city. With an elevation of
1619 metres, the mountain is still covered with virgin forests reserved since the Mizo Chief's time. It is
constantly visited by number of tourists at all times and therefore proper waste management is an
important issue for management of the place.
The programme commenced with a small function held at the Resort’s restaurant which was chaired by
Mr. C. Lalduhawma, Member Secretary, Mizoram Pollution Control Board and Co-Ordinator, ENVIS
Centre, Mizoram chaired the function and delivered a small speech regarding Solid Waste
Management. He explained on how the Central Ministry is very much concerned about the proper
management of Solid Wastes today and invited the eco-clubs to follow suit and went on to suggest few
ideas on how the eco-clubs could do for the proper waste management in their school campus or even
in their homes. The chairman also emphasized on the importance of waste segregation into bio-
degradable and non-biodegradable types and disposal of segregated wastes accordingly and invited
eco-clubs to start practicing waste segregation starting on World Environment Day this year. The
speaker also apprised the participants of the seminar of the Supreme Court’s rulings on Solid Waste
Management, such as prohibition of open burning of wastes and added on the harmful effects of such
practice. He also urged the Eco-Clubs to put more efforts for carrying out activities towards
environmental protection and submit their activity reports on a regular monthly basis for onward
submission to the Ministry. After the seminar the participants were divided into different groups to
collect wastes in and around Hmuifang Tlang. The solid wastes so collected were disposed off in a
designated management centre. Several new dustbins, provided by the ENVIS centre were also placed at
suitable locations within Hmuifang Tlang and one hoarding with write up related to cleanliness was
also put up near the entrance gate of Hmuifang Resort.
In all total of 58 persons participated in this clean up programme along with 4 students each from the
following school Eco-clubs with their respective teacher in-charge.

4. Observance of Global Hand Washing Day, 2017
Global Hand Washing Day is an important global event celebrated annually on 15th October. It was
founded by the Global Hand-washing Partnership. Global Hand Washing Day is dedicated to
increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy,
effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. The theme for Global Hand Washing
Day, 2017 is ‘Our Hands, Our Future!’. Global Hand Washing Day, 2017 was observed by Eco-Clubs in
association with Mizoram ENVIS Hub. Since the day falls on Sunday arrangement was made for
observation of Global Hand Washing Day, 2017 on 12th and 13th October, 2017. 8 schools within
Aizawl City were selected for the programme in observation of Global Hand Washing Day, 2017. Small
functions were observed in each school during which lectures were given on topics relating to global
hand washing day, importance of hand washing with soap, etc. The proper ways of hand washing with
soap were demonstrated to the students and the students in turn washed their hands with soap and
water as taught.

also presented each school a hand towel and liquid hand wash during the function.

5. Swachh Bharat Abhyan: Cleanliness Campaign with theme, “Swachhta Hi Seva’
Cleanliness Campaign with the theme, “ Cleanliness with Service’ was organized by the Department of
Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt. of India, Mizoram Pollution Control Board, Mizoram
ENVIS Hub and Aizawl Eco-Clubs at Zoological Park, Sakawrtuichhun village, Aizawl, Mizoram on 2nd
October 2017. Shri Tashi Wangdi, Director, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change,
Govt. of India participated in the programme as the Chief Guest.

About 70 Eco-Club students and in-charge teachers from 7 nos. of school eco clubs and about 30
officials from the organizing departments attended the Campaign.
The program started with a small function with Shri Liandawla, Addl P.C.C.F, Department of
Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt. of Mizoram as the Chairman. The Chief Guest
delivered speech before the gathering emphasizing on the need to maintain cleanliness with words of
encouragement to the Eco-Club students participating in the campaign and other participants. All the
participants took mass pledge taking on upholding cleanliness. The program was completed with
planting of seedlings, followed by cleanliness drives by picking up wastes within the whole Park.

6. Extension of NGC Programme to Colleges in Mizoram
As directed by MoEF & CC, colleges have been identified for the setting up of Eco-Club during the year
2017-18. A total of 23 colleges in Mizoram have been identified who have expressed willingness to
join NGC programme. Some of the colleges have already enrolled and established the Eco-Club in their
colleges and started functioning without receiving fund from the Ministry within 2017-18 .

B. INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL ECO-CLUB ACTIVITIES
During the FY, 2017-18, School Eco-Clubs of Mizoram have continue to successfully implemented
NGC Program. Many of the environmental related activities were taken up in their respective schools,
based on the suggested activities prepared by SNA in the form of Month wise Activities Calendar for
the Eco-Clubs. Some of the major activities taken by the Eco-Clubs are summarized below:
1. Blue and Green Bins for Solid Waste Management
For the FY, 2017-18, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt. of India has
sanctioned and released Rs.5000/- for each Eco-Club, out of which Rs. 2000/- has been kept aside for
procurement of Bins (Blue &Green) for the purpose of educating the school children on segregation of
wastes at point source as dry and wet wastes. Eco-Clubs have implemented this activity during the
year and have placed Blue and Green Bins in their school campus and initiated the practice of
segregating wastes
2. Swachh Bharat: Clealiness Drives
Cleanliness Campaigns is one of the regular major activities taken up by most of the Eco-Clubs all
round the year. Cleaning up of school building, class rooms, campus, water tank and school approach
road were performed on regular basis, apart from creating awareness on the importance of upholding
cleanliness among the Eco-Club members and fellow students. Weeding of school compound was also
done regularly. A number of Compost pits were constructed within the school campus for
decomposing biodegradable wastes.
3. Plantation
Plantation is another major activity of the Eco-Clubs during the reporting year. Planting of different
kinds of trees and flowers was carried out by eco-clubs as part of environmental protection and
beautification. A number of Saplings were planted within the school campus and suitable local places.
4. Maintaining Eco-Garden:
A number of eco-clubs have been maintaining Eco-Garden within their school campus where
different flowers and plants were planted. Eco-clubs have been maintaining the plantation area/Eco-
Garden within the school campus by regular weeding, providing manures to newly planted trees and
existing trees. Newly planted trees were fenced and repairing of fencing was done whenever needed.
5. Observation of important Environmental Related Days
Environmental related days like Earth Day, World Environment Day, World Ozone Day, World Water
Day, Green Mizoram Day, World Anti-tobacco Day, Green Consumer Day, World Health Day, etc.
were regularly observed by Eco-Clubs. Awareness programmes were organized on important issues
like importance of planting trees, waste management, cleanliness, pollution, conservation of forest and
wildlife, etc. in observation of such days. Other activities like cleanliness drive and planting of trees
within and outside of school campus, competitions like essay writing, drawing/painting, poster
making, quiz, etc. were also taken up during observation programme.
6. Environmental Awareness Campaigns
Awareness campaigns were held throughout the year towards cleanliness and environmental
protection among the eco-clubs. Eco-clubs have been constantly making efforts for sensitizing citizens
toward environmental protection, by organizing several public awareness activities like sanitation
campaign, poster campaign on important environmental related issues, distribution of leaflets,
construction of toilets and making dustbins for public use.
