A Jewish View of the New Year
We just had Rosh Hashana a few
months ago, so why do we need
another new year celebration? After
all there are some truly historical
reasons why we Jews should actually stay away from New Year’s
Day. Did you know that it was Julius Ceasar in the year 45 BCE
who made January 1st, News Year’s day? He named it after the
Greek G-d, who symbolized two faces - one to look back and one
to look forward. Not a bad idea, but the majority of the people
took that idea and turned it into a day to get drunk…Oh well!
In the year 325 C.E. the Christian emperor Sylvester dedicated
January 1st not as a new year, but, believe it or not, the day
to celebrate the bris of the Christian savior! He also used it
as an opportunity to decree anti-semitic decrees discriminating
against the Jews in the Empire. (This is why January 1st is
known as Sylvester Day in Israel - a way to say---we the Jewish
people are still around despite his decrees). Still later,in 1582,
when January 1st was renamed the beginning of the year, Pope
Gregory used the ‘bris day’ as a way to try and force Jews to
convert, and had special houses called Houses of Conversion
built. That didn’t work either.
Despite this history, the question is not whether we should or
shouldn't celebrate. But how should we do it? Is there a way to
mark the holiday Jewishly? Let me suggest a few Jewish insights.

New Year's marks a time when people everywhere celebrate the
possibility of building a better tomorrow. It symbolizes our desire
to move from the past to the future, the old from the new. But
what if we really understood that our words -our resolutions and
commitments- could create a new beginning? What if we really
believed that our vows had the power to help us get past the past?
We all have a deep human desire to be able to start again, not to be
imprisoned by the past. We need to feel hope for new possibilities
and see that our future is not governed entirely by our history.
Our tradition celebrates the ability to start over throughout the
year. In Jewish life every day, every week, and at many other times,
we are given the chance to begin again.
In daily morning prayers, we thank God for renewing the world.
Every Shabbat we recall the first moment of creation, and by doing
so, give ourselves the chance to start over. At Rosh Hashanah, Jews
everywhere celebrate the birthday of the world.
Let’s use our traditions to create richer, more meaningful ways to
live as the year 2015 begins.

When it was time to update our wills, we decided to include MJCBY as a beneficiary as it has and continues to be our Jewish center where we have found friends, community, and Jewish life. We are MJCBY
Linda Kornreich, her husband, Larry, and their growing family
moved to Morristown area in the late 1970s and joined MJCBY.
She and Larry figured this would be a great way to meet new
people. “I remember everyone being so warm and friendly and
welcoming us as newcomers,” shares Linda.
Celeste Reingold and her husband David were pregnant with their
only child nearly thirty years ago (in the mid-80s) when they
moved into the area and joined MJCBY. She and David thought
his would be a great way to settle into the community. They even
found their first realtor through MJCBY.
The Reingold’s realtor, Eileen Goldberg (also a MJCBY member),
helped them get settled in the area and at shul and introduced
them to many people. One of those people was Linda Kornreich.
That early acquaintance has morphed over time to a very special
friendship. Linda refers to Celeste many times in this interview
as her “younger friend”. They reflect that they represent dif-
ferent generations as their children are different ages… while
Linda’s youngest daughter Jill was celebrating her wedding, Ce-
leste’s daughter Simma was becoming a Bat Mitzvah.
However, despite being at different stages of life, they have
grown much closer over the past three decades. And they both
will say, “It was the synagogue events that really connected us.”

It all began as the ladies paths crossed through their MJCBY
involvement many times over the years. They worked on sever-
al committees together including the synagogue’s board, Sis-
terhood committees , programs and dinner dances. As Linda
stepped into a chair role for a dinner dance, Celeste served
on the committee. And, when Celeste chaired Shalach Manot,
Linda jumped in to help on that committee!
Linda once served a president of the synagogue board and then
continued on the board when Celeste’s husband, David, be-
came President. Many years later, Linda and Celeste were
on the Board at the same time when Celeste was Sisterhood
president. (And this is only scratching the service of all these
two fabulous women have contributed of their time and talents
to MJCBY.)
About ten years ago, the friendship grew deeper as the couples
began a Shabbat dinner group to get together once every six
weeks with dear friends including the Kleins and the Balabans.
Than the group started to attend synagogue events together
and share fun experiences here at MJCBY.
Today, their friendship is much more that synagogue events
and volunteer committees, it includes trips to the Botanical
Gardens, day trips across the Hudson, couple vacations with
another MJCBY member and dear friend Meryl Balaban, ringing
in both the Jewish and secular New Years, sharing holidays,
etc.
As Celeste and Linda will say, “we’ve shared the good, the bad
and the ugly.” But it seems there was mostly good as these
two friends share many memories, laughs, and experiences
both within MJCBY and outside.
Their advice for fellow congregants, “Go to events, volunteer,
attend meetings, see a friendly face and introduce yourself.”
You never know who you might meet!
WE ARE MJCBY!
Linda and Celeste have many fun MJCBY memories, laughs and stories to share.
We all know well from our history and es-pecially from the chapters in the Torah that, we the children of Israel, have a
special mission in the world. Whether that be a “light unto the world” or participating in tikkun olam, we learn from an early age that as Jews we have a responsibility to live out our destiny and hopefully bring betterment to our fellow Jews and to all peoples of the world.
However, what about you and me as individuals (not just a mem-bers of the people of Israel). Do we also have a unique role or mission to play out? A few weeks ago I was reading a torah com-mentary by Rabbi David Hoffman of JTS on parasha Vayishlach. In this torah portion, we have the story of Jacob “wresting” with an angel and coming out of that experience with a new name (Israel) and a changed sense of purpose.
Rabbi Hoffman relates a midrash from Rabbi Sholom Noach Ber-ezovsky, the Slonimer Rebbe who empathizes the aspect of a personal mission as the central teaching in parashah Vayishlach. Specifically, he tells us that the angel who struggled with Jacob, like all angels, was tasked with a unique mission by G-d and for this purpose was he sent into the world. His mission was to challenge Jacob until he affirmed his commitment to G-d. Upon completion of their unique missions, each angel was then al-lowed to come before G-d and sing a new song at the start of a new day. That is why the angel had to leave at daybreak.
This struck me as a beautiful midrash, but to top it, the Slonimer Rebbe goes on to state that “what is true for angels is true for human beings.” Each of us has a distinct role to play and as such, we are each an agent or shaliach of the Divine presence in the world.

This month, on Monday, January 19, we celebrate the
life of Dr. Martin Luther King, whose life is truly a sym-
bol of being G-d’s shaliach in this world. If there ever
was a human being, who not only had a unique mission
but lived out that purpose to the fullest, it was Dr. King.
Dr. King said, “I just want to do G-d’s will. And He’s allowed
me to go to the mountain. And I’ve looked over and seen the
promise land!” His vision, his voice and his struggles have en-
sured that we today are beneficiaries of that life’s work. We all
can join in to that new version of the old song at the start of
a new day….”Free at last, free at last, thank G-d Almighty, We
are free at last!”
When I read the midrash by the Sloimer Rebbe, I could not but
reflect on a certain fictional angel who was sent to this world
with one unique purpose, but to challenge a certain George to
see that his life was important and meaningful to all around
him. When George turned from despair to seeing why his mission
had meaning, a bell rang and our angel….Clarence got to sing
his new song and received his wings.
Take this time to reflect on your own unique purpose whether
great or small and work tirelessly towards its achievement. We
will all benefit from your efforts.

Family NewsJOSHUA BENJAMIN LANDSMANALEX WANATICK
Rebecca and Michael Wanatick are thrilled to invite our family, friends and the con-
gregation to share in our joy as our son, Alex, is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 10.
Alex is a 7th grade honor student at Randolph Middle School. He plays travel basketball & lacrosse for Randolph Township. Alex has been a camper at Camp Deeny Riback for the past 7 summers and looks forward to being back this summer. Alex loves the outdoors; playing ball, paddle boarding, swimming, biking and spending time with friends. Alex is an active member of Kadima at MJCBY.
For his mitzvah project, Alex has worked with the TryCAN program in Summit. He participat-ed with special needs children, helping them to learn the skills for lacrosse. He was enthu-siastic, encouraging and genuine in working with the players. Alex discovered that giving of his own time to someone else was not only helpful to the player, but also personally re-warding and uplifting for himself. He loves being a mentor to younger children and has a gift for connecting with them.
Alex, we are so proud of the very special young man that you have become. You have worked so hard to reach this milestone! It is with love and pride that we, Mom, Dad and Sam, along with the rest of our family and friends share in your accomplishment and wish you a hearty mazal tov. We are so ex-cited to share in this very special simcha in your life. We love you very much!

invite family, friends and congregants
to share in their joy when their son, Josh-
ua Benjamin, is called to the Torah as a
Bar Mitzvah on January 17.
Joshua is a seventh-grade honors student
at Randolph Middle School. He plays
soccer with the Randolph Recreation team
and skis with the Ski Club at school. He
also likes tennis, biking, hiking and white
water rafting. Joshua has spent the past
two summers at a Jewish sleep away camp
where he has earned his boating license
and rides a jet ski independently.
For his mitzvah project, Joshua has become
involved with the Jewish Relief Agency
food pantry. For the past year, he has been
packing and delivering food to people in
their homes. He has found it rewarding as
he is learning a tremendous amount about
the concept of mitzvah from meeting the
families to whom he delivers this needed
food. He looks forward to continuing as
an active volunteer at the food pantry and
including his sister and parents as well.
Joshua’s parents, sister, grandparents,
aunts, uncles and cousins are very proud
of Joshua’s accomplishments and look
forward to celebrating this milestone
with family and friends. We are proud of
his diligence and dedication to preparing

daughter, Mia Morganstein, is called to
the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Satur-
day, January 24. Mia is a seventh grader
at Randolph Middle School, where she
plays tuba in the band and appreciates
art and science class. She enjoys piano
lessons at Little Notes Music School,
and acting class at the Mayo Perform-
ing Arts Center. Mia has composed and
performed an original composition on
piano. She loves to ski, scuba dive and
hang out with her friends. She likes to
read science fiction novels instead of
sleeping.
For Mia’s Mitzvah project, she is
volunteering with another MJCBY
student at the Regency Grande Nursing
Center interacting with the patients,
painting nails and making new friends
among the seniors who reside there.
Their newest friend, Johanna, is 102 and
loves her visits from her two beautiful
girls.
Mia is creative, loving, loyal and
imaginative and her parents are so
proud of how hard she has been working
to prepare for her Bat Mitzvah. Mia’s
parents, brother, Isaac, friends and
family attending from North Carolina to
California all look forward to celebrating
Mia’s Bat Mitzvah day with her.

During the month of November, our children learned about giving thanks to people who are not as fortunate as they
are. Stacey Brown told me about a program called “Giving Tuesday,” which I immediately thought ‘what a nice way to get the children involved’. Every child from Shalom Yeladim brought in food to be donated to the Kosher Food Pantry. Since this was a time of giving, I thought it would be nice to give in another way. Every child made a Thanksgiving card for members of our Shalom Club. There were lots of smiles on everyone’s faces, and we enjoyed the seniors so much we came back again for Hanukkah to have a sing along. It was just priceless. Thanks to Lori Chimoff for helping to make this happen.
This year more than 130 people attended our Hanukkah Celebration. A lot of people contributed to make it this successful. Thank you to Sue Berger (Hannah & Adi’s grandma), Ellen Charm (Ari’s grandma), and Marjorie Najarian (Alex’s grandma) for coming in and making all those delicious latkes for our Hanukkah Celebration. I also would like to thank the parent organization for their continued support in everything we do at Shalom Yeladim. And, of course, I would like to thank the teachers for all their hard work in preparing the children so well for their Hanukkah performance.
I would also like to thank some of the class mom’s who came in to bake cookies with our children, Ariel Warshaw & Ruth Barbut. Ruth also made the delicious cake pops for our celebration and I must admit they were yummy. Also, Morah Randi’s daughter, Jordyn, came in to bake with the children. There were loads of smiling faces.
Our month ended with our 4 year olds having a sing along with our Shalom Club.

Dear Families,
Come Celebrate Shabbat the MJCBY way! Shabbat is the holiest of the Jewish holidays and because it comes around each week, people sometimes overlook its importance. Judaism teaches that Shabbat is a day set apart from the rest of the week, giving people time to focus on what the daily busy schedule often makes difficult. Spend time with family and friends. Have a few moments for introspection.
Here at MJCBY, in addition to services in the sanctuary, we have Shabbat celebrations designed for our youngest children and our school aged children. TGIS is a Friday night service, for families with young children, as we welcome Shabbat - a time for singing, stories, crafts and dinner with friends. Tot Shabbat is held on Saturday mornings once a month with Morah Shari. Songs, stories, crafts and snack make this morning celebration fun for young children and parents alike. For our school-aged families, Jr. Congregation is held twice a month in Wilner Chapel. This is a learning service where students are able to practice and learn prayer, build confidence as they help to lead the service. The Torah Parasha is a dramatic endeavour with children playing the parts. A small private kiddush is held after services, but if you are still hungry, join the larger kiddush held in the ballroom!
