Israel on my mind

This land is mine. God gave this land to me,This brave and ancient land to me.

And when the morning sun reveals her hills and plains,Then I see a land where children can run free.

These are the lyrics to the score of the Otto Preminger movie,

Exodus, from 1960. In 1961, Pat Boone wrote these lyrics, not

as a Jew, but as a lifelong lover of Israel.

There are countless peoples and nations that have deep connections to their ancestral homelands. The Italians call it the Old Country, the Irish – the Old Sod, the Russians pine for Mother Russia and the Germans honor the Fatherland.

We, the Jews, the descendants of Jacob, have for most of our history been wanderers and living in “Galut” or in exile; literally – homeless. We just finished the saga of Jacob (now Israel) and his family moving to Egypt as guests and in a few generations becoming slaves in a land not their own. From that moment, the yearning to return to land promised to Abraham and his family became the singular and consistent theme for over three thousand years. Moses would lead us out of slavery to our homeland, but even then we were never quite settled until the State of Israel was brought on the world stage in 1948.

All who come to Israel, both visitors and citizens alike, are coming home to “Ha Eretz” or simply “The Land.” There are three central principles that have kept our people throughout the ages, no matter where in this world they were located:

1. Belief in One God, Ruler of the Universe.2. The centrality of the Law as the guide to living our lives.3. The attachment to and the yearning for Ha Eretz – the land of our fathers and our home for eternity.

As in the words written by Pat Boone and immortalized in song by Andy Williams, “this land is mine…” although much has been written and argued for decades about what is this land (i.e. boundaries). To be clear, in 2000 at Taba, the Israelis and Palestinians at the very end of the Clinton administration had worked out a plan that would account for about 98% of all boundaries. Unfortunately, Yasser Arafat at the time could not bring himself to a final Yes!! Here we are, 16 years later, and things have not only gone unchanged but have gone in the opposite direction.

In 2017, we pray not for the coming of the Messiah, but for a real, wholesome and lasting peace.Three thousand years has been long enough to wait. Don’t you think?

In our Sim Shalom Shabbat Siddur, there is a prayer that comes right after the Musaf Kedushah on page 158. It is an alternative to the traditional prayer above it and one on my personal favorites. It reads:

May it be your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors, who returns Your children to their land, to lead us in joy to our land and to settle us within our borders. No more shall violence be heard in our land; no more shall destruction be found within its borders. May we be privileged to worship You there, in splendor and in awe, as in ancient days.

This month we celebrate Tu B’shevat, the New Year for the trees. The trees of Israel that sprung up from the swamps of Tel Aviv and made gardens in the Negev desert. Ha Eretz is blooming as we move soon into spring.

May we pray for the Peace of Jerusalem and the entire Land that is Israel.

Gerry

One of the mitzvot of the Purim holiday is the sending of food to other Jewish people. This act, called Mishloach Manot or “sending of portions,” references a section of the Book of Esther where Jews refuted Haman’s accusation that the Jews were “a scattered, and divided people” and demonstrated by sending portions that they were, in fact, united.

The Purim basket program (Mishloach Manot) is one of MJCBY’s largest fundraisers which supports all of our great programs, so in the spirit of a united MJCBY congregation, please consider participating in one or more of the following ways:

1) Send to the entire congregation: $1542) Send to individual congregants and/or teachers who you select: $10 per address3) Send to college students and non-congregant family and friends: $36 per address - includes shipping4) Buy hamantashen by the pound: $12 per pound5) Buy Green’s Chocolate Babka (16 oz): $8 each

SIMCHA SHABBAT: A NEW MJCBY PROGRAM

Simcha Shabbat is a monthly celebration of wedding anniversaries of our members. During the Shabbat service, members will be recognized for their simcha and receive a special gift. This month we are also honoring those with “milestone birthdays."

Our first Simcha Shabbat was a wonderful event. After being "snowed out" on Saturday, December 17, the special day was rescheduled for Saturday, January 7. We honored 8 couples on the bimah who celebrated a wedding anniversary in November or December.

MJCBY wishes a Mazel tov all our members who had a wedding anniversary in November or December:

Michael & Meryl BalabanIrwin & Beverly BernsRobert & Nancy BernsLouis Bodian & Helena KloderHoward Buxbaum & Paula BarberAlan & Adrienne ChaninJeremy & Judy DiringerDoug & Debra GoldsteinDoron Grosman & Karen SecularEzra & Bonnie Kazam

We invite the entire congregation to join us on February 4 to celebrate our next Simcha Shabbat with our honorees. We will honor those having a wedding anniversary in January and February, as well as those having a milestone birthday over the past several months.

To ensure that we have everyone's correct wedding anniversary date, we ask all of our members to take a moment to log into their online ChaverWare accounts to check that they have properly inputted this information and that their email address listed is correct. If you need help with ChaverWare please contact Gerry Gross in the office.

If you have any questions about Simcha Shabbat please contact Jeff Grayzel, the MJCBY Simcha Shabbat coordinator, at [email protected]

Youth News USY

What does USY mean to me? USY means get-ting together once a month with friends from

religious school that I don’t get to see each week anymore. It means fun activities and always great FOOD and SNACKS! It’s a break from the school grind. It’s dances and conventions. It’s FUN!

In January we had fun at a “Chocolate Craze” event where we created our own chocolate candy bars and warmed up with hot chocolate.

Everyone should try a regional event whether it’s a dance, Shabbaton or convention. I was hesitant to go to my first Shabbaton not knowing anyone but I’m so glad I did. I’ve made great friends from as South as East Brunswick and as North as Fair Lawn.

Our next event is Mitzvah Madness, Sunday Febru-ary 12th from 6:30PM - 8:00PM. The event will include different mitzvah projects and you can re-ceive HS Community Service hours.

It’s never too late to join USY or to just come try an event. I hope I’ll get to see you at an event very soon.

Beryn Weinstock

MJCBY USY Co-President

KADIMA

In January, Kadima had two amazing events!! The first event was a day spent on the ice at Mennen Arena. We spent our time getting more and

more comfortable on the ice.

Our second event was a movie night at the synagogue. We all brought our sleeping bags and pillows to gather on the floor of Frigand Hall. We enjoyed pizza bagels and popcorn with the movie and played some board games to keep us entertained.

Next month, we will be gather to go bowling right after Hebrew School on February 26. Location to be determined. Our usual bagels will be provided!

If interested, please email the Kadima leader Dania at [email protected]

Family News

Jeffrey Grayzel and Lynn Castrataro warmly invite the con-gregation to celebrate with them as their son, Alexander, is

called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on February 18. Alexander is a seventh-grader at the Red Oaks School in Morristown, a Montessori school he has attended since preschool. His favor-ite subject at school is math and he also enjoys Spanish and music.

Alexander is a sports enthusiast who likes to play just about every kind of sport you can think of. Currently, he is a 3-sport athlete who plays travel soccer, basketball for his middle school and little league baseball. He has been a perennial All-Star for Morristown National Little League for the past 5 seasons. Like his brother, Alex has also been a competitive jump roper who has competed at the US Junior Olympics several times, winning multiple medals. He also enjoys skiing, tennis and playing the trumpet.

For his mitzvah project, Alex volunteered with SNAP, the Special Needs Athletic Program. SNAP is an organization created to inspire youth to work together through athletics, peer mentoring activities and educational programs. SNAP's goals are to raise awareness about the impact individual students can make in the lives of children with autism and other disabilities. Alex has volunteered once a week as a mentor to a special needs child as they played various sports together. Alexander’s parents, brother Jacob, and his grandparents are so proud of Alex and his accomplishments. They, along with his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends look forward to his special day.
