high standards in teaching and researchThe University is both the promoter of innovation and the protector of tradition. In an increasingly

uncertain and volatile world it is both: a dynamic change-agent creating new knowledge, molding new skills and shaping new social identities an institution of stability, consolidation and discrimination

The University, as a public institution, is confronted by new accounts of the public good and, as anautonomous institution, must engage in exciting new markets for higher education. It is againstthis background that Rohilkhand University has developed its vision for the twenty-first century:

Students firstRohilkhand University puts students at the heart of its enterprise. It is committed to offering them

the maximum degree of choice of academic programmes consistent with the need to maintain a rigorousand disciplined approach to higher education, partly through the development of a flexible but coherentmodular system.

It is also determined to provide students with a satisfying experience outside the classroom byproviding a comprehensive range of other services and support and by encouraging the development ofa strong students’ union.

The profile and progress of the different departments is here by cited in the following pages:

Department of Ancient History and Culture1) General Profile

Department of Ancient History and Culture was established in the University in July 1985. Duringthe 27 years of its existence, the department has earned a respectable reputation at the national andinternational levels. The department has hosted 5 international and about 30 national level seminars andconferences, and has through its faculty support assisted in organizing at least 2 international colloquiumabroad and 4 international workshop and seminars in other Indian universities. The department hashosted a session of the Indian History Congress, a joint session of the conferences of Indian ArchaeologicalSociety, Indian Society for Prehistory and Quaternary Studies etc., and three sessions of the U.P. HistoryCongress at Bareilly. Several regional level seminars and invited lectures have been hosted, besides 8notable “Munnalal Memorial Endowment Lectures”.

The Department established a small archaeological museum in 1987 as “Panchala Museum” with asmall collection of antiquities collected during the departmental explorations of various archaeologicalsites in the region; and which has grown over years. Donations of antiquities by certain responsible andenlightened citizens were also received for the museum. The “Rama Shankar Rawat Gallery” wasestablished in 2010 with the donation of antiquities received from Col. Rajiv Rawat from his privatecollection.

Archaeological explorations and excavations conducted by the department have been fruitful inenhancing knowledge of the region. The excavation at Abhaipur (Bisalpur, distt. Pilibhit) yielded a rareburial belonging to the Proto-historic period.

The department concentrated upon the history of ancient Graeco-Indian interaction under theleadership of Professor U.P. Arora, the pioneer in the field Greek studies who has been awarded of theGolden Cross, Order of Honor by the Government of Greece. The department became the headquarters ofthe ‘Indian Society for Greek and Roman Studies’ (ISGARS) and has regularly published 14 issues of aresearch journal, Yavanika : Indo-Hellenic Studies. The department has become one of the very few centersin India for doctoral research in Graeco-Indian Studies.

The ancient Indo-Iranian interaction has also become another theme of interest for thedepartment. Many research papers in the field have been produced and three Indo-Iranian thematicseminars have been organized and hosted here. The department has been able to publish the seminarpapers too. One publication was awarded the World Prize for the Best Book on Iran for the Year 1986 bythe President of Iran. The department could recently establish an “Indo-Iranian Studies Centre” with thecollaboration of Embassy of Iran in India.

The department has been strong in producing research and publishing it. Recently, the third issueof Aitihaya, the journal on ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology, was released. Faculty of thedepartment contributed several papers in different places; and published one seminar proceedings andone Museum publication.

The department of Ancient History and Culture conducts degree programmes for M.A. (AncientHistory & Culture), M.Phil. (Ancient History & Culture) and Ph.D. (Ancient History & Culture). Thepapers in M.A. include Ancient Indian history, archaeology, Indian numismatics, epigraphy, art and

Department of HumanitiesThe Department of Humanities was established in 1996 and since its inception. It has been sharing

space in the 1626 sq.m of Nehru Kendra. A new building is ready for occupancy. There are 3 classrooms. There are two regular faculty members— a reader in Communicative English and a lecturer in EngineeringEconomics while there is 01 post vacant for lecturer in Communicative English. English, EngineeringEconomics, Principles of Management are the disciplines taught to our students with the success rate inthe examinations being 99%. A new discipline of Reasoning in Technology has been introduced this year.Faculty

Dr. Asha Choubey Reader in Communicative English, Head.Dr. Anita Tyagi Lecturer in Engineering EconomicsDr. R.P. Singh Guest Faculty

Thrust AreaDepartment of Humanities aims at widening the nature of exposure that engineers of today require

to survive and excel in their respective fields. Major focus of the department is on imparting languageskills to engineering students, developing their skills in management and imparting them the basicknowledge of Economics; since besides their technical expertise engineers need to be well trained to tackleall problems that may arise from time to time in the industry with increasing stress on value-basededucation. The core skills of language learning RWSL are also catered to. While the practice inCommunicative English arms them for the corporate life that most of them aspire for, knowledge ofMicroeconomics prepares our engineers for the challenges ahead. Engineers are not only the harbingersof development, they have also to work towards sustained growth and extract the maximum benefit outof limited resources. Industry does not need engineers who can manage machines only, in fact, industryis all about managing the available resources and the Principles of Management takes care of this need. All this is possible in a rationale environment, hence the introduction of Reasoning in Technology. All thefour components of this department together so cut and polish the technical minds that the final effect isbound to be amazingly brilliant.Research Projects:

In July, 2012 the department completed a major project “A Critical Study of Anxiety as a MajorImpediment in English learning in ESL Students of Uttar Pradesh: Factors, Role & Solutions”funded by UGC running, of which Dr. Asha Choubey is the Principal Investigator.

Department of Applied Chemistry1. General Profile of the Department:

The unit of Applied Chemistry under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology was established in1995 with the start of B. Tech. courses to cater the demand of B. Tech. students pertaining to core chemistrycourses in I Year. Initially the department was established as a part of Basic Sciences for the B. Tech.program as in every Engineering Institution. However, later taking into consideration the dearth of qualityPG programs in the specialized areas of chemistry, it was thought to upgrade the status of the departmentby initiating new PG programmes in Chemistry, specially so when there was no separate department inthe campus. Based on above rational the department started a PG course namely M. Sc. in AppliedChemistry with specialization in Organic / Medicinal Chemistry from the session 2004-05 after the approvalof UGC and state Government and from here onwards the department has been functioning independently. At present the department is sharing workplace at Nehru Kendra, however it is going to be shifted to itsnew building very soon.Courses assisted/ offered by the Department:

Department of Applied MathematicsProfile:

Department of Applied Mathematics is an important and noteworthy department of IET situatedwithin the campus of the university. It came into existence in 1995 with the start of IET and acquired itspresent status in 2004-05. It deals not only with Maths. Syllabi of B.Tech and B.Pharm. Courses but alsowith a two years M.S.c. course in Applied Mathematics (with total intake of 30 every year). Advancedlevel researches (mainly in Relativity and Cosmology, and Fluid Mechanics) leading to Ph.D. degree inMathematics are also in progress in department.

Faculty:1. Dr. A. Prasad Reader and Head2. Dr. Madan LaL Assistant Professor

Achievements (2011-12):The department has continued to provide efficient and sufficient inputs to technical graduates. Its

P.G. level dealings have also been appreciable. Specifically during the session 2011-12, the successes of allthe enrolled (regular) students in M.Sc. even before the declaration of the Improvement Exams.

Results were 97% (for previous year) and 96% (for final year). Of these, the final year result consistsof 14% in First class with Honors, 68% in First class, and 14% in second class. Also, at least two studentsevery year have surfaced to qualify in NET/GATE. In post P.G. (Ph.D.) Programme, although no newentry was there in 2011-12, yet one student of earlier enrollment arrived at the final stage of his thesis-submission.

Participation in academic conferences has been continued, as one of the faculties (Dr. Madan Lal)attended two National Conferences during the period.

Future Plan:As above, the department has tired and is still trying its best to visualize its aims despite very

insufficient number of regular faculty. In future, the department plans to speed up, even more, in itsefforts by increasing first the number of regular faculty suitably.
