I got in touch with CIL andspoke to a lady called Edith, then a lady called Angela, whothen invited me in for a cuppa!I explained why I was interestedin joining CIL although I didwonder if my age would beagainst me, only to find it wasn’t.

My husband and myself havebeen helped and supported bythe community, especially whenmy husband was just diagnosedwith M.S. So I felt here is mychance to give some of my timeto the community in helpingothers, and to do somethingpositive as well as giving metime to escape from my hubbyfor a little while (Bless Him!).

Raising Awarenessof Hate Crime

Hate crime is defined by theCriminal Justice System as:“Hate Crime is any crime orincident which is perceived bythe victim, or any other person,to be motivated by a hostility orprejudice, based on a personsreal or presumed religion, sexual orientation, race, gender identity or disability.”

It might be that someonehas shouted names at you, taken money from you ortold you to buy them things

when you didn’t want to, itmight also be that someonehas physically hurt you ordamaged your property.

Someone doesn’t have tohate you to commit thesecrimes against you, they mayonly dislike the fact you aredisabled or gay for example. This might be difficult to proveand you may try to ignore itbut it is really important thatyou let someone know if youthink you are being targeted.

DisabledGoprovides detailedonline accessguides to a hugerange of placesthat you willwant to visit.

The list is almost endless.

DisabledGo was founded in2000 by Dr Gregory Burke who,as a wheelchair user himselfsince the age of 16, is acutelyaware of the barriers whichdisabled people face when tryingto access leisure, education, employment and services intheir community.

The business was born outof Gregory’s desire to breakdown these barriers throughthe provision of detailed online

access information to ahuge range ofpublic places. The power ofknowing that aparticular venueis suited to yourindividual needsbefore leavinghome cannot beunderestimated.Everyone’s needsare different, andwith this in mind,

Gregory embarkedon 2 years of consultation withdisabled people across the UK.This in depth research identifiedall the types of informationthat would be required todetermine whether a venue issuited to an individual’s specificrequirements. The result of thisconsultation was the creation ofa highly detailed pan-disabilitysurvey template which our highlytrained surveyors use whenvisiting the places they assess.

The first online access guidewas published in 2002 on behalf

of the London Borough ofCroydon. 11 years on theyremain a highly valued client. The last 10 years have beena period of rapid growthand DisabledGo is now theUK’s leading provider ofaccess information. Workingin partnership with localauthorities, universities, colleges, NHS Trusts andprivate sector organisations,we now publish accessinformation to well over120,000 places of interestacross the UK and theRepublic of Ireland.

Yet, whilst the business hasgrown significantly since theearly days, we remain totallycommitted to our foundingprinciples and particularly toour commitment to grassrootsconsultation. In this waywe ensure that the accessinformation we provide isaccurate, reliable, consistent, user friendly and, above all, that it reflects your demandsand expectations as a user.
