CLASSIC PAINTED TIMBER GREENHOUSES MAKE A FINE GARDEN FEATURE,

PRACTICAL TO USE AND EASY TO MAINTAIN

PerfectLy Made traditionaL Greenhouses

For 30 years Marston & Langinger have been creating glass buildings with the highest standards of design and craftsmanship. Our timber greenhouses combine the charm and detail of traditional Victorian glasshouses, with up-to-date technology and construction. The end result is a beautiful garden building made from traditional materials but without the need for frequent maintenance.

Whether you simply want a place to store vulnerable specimens over the winter, or you long for a retreat where you can while away time indulging your passion for plants, there is a Marston & Langinger greenhouse that is right for you. And all our buildings are designed to enhance your garden, creating an attractive, permanent feature.

There are two designs in various sizes available from our Traditional range, or use our bespoke service for a unique greenhouse designed specifically for you.

Marston & LanGinGer’s traditionaL Greenhouse ranGe

The two designs in our Traditional range are full of delightful, classic features such as curved lapped panes, hand turned finials and solid timber panelled doors. Choose from a lean-to or a double-pitch design that can be set on brick, stone or rendered walls, or alternatively on a clapboard timber base.

These durable cedar-wood buildings are crafted in our factory in Norfolk using traditional joinery techniques. They combine the consistent quality of machine preparation with the individuality of handwork. In line with our environmental vision, our greenhouses are made using natural solid timber from sustainable sources, and finished with M&L’s own brand solvent-free paint, available in 70 colours.

If you are unsure about which greenhouse is right for you, get in touch and we can provide guidance on which design, size and features may be suitable.

The Traditional Double-pitch design is 3.1m (10’) wide and comes in lengths starting at 2.2m (7’3”) and increasing in bay increments of approximately one metre. The examples illustrated show up to a 6-bay building, but there is no limit to the number of bays that can be put together.

The Double-pitch greenhouse makes a wonderful freestanding feature in any garden, and it can also be built with an end or side abutting a solid wall.

The Traditional Lean-to design is 2.75m (9’) wide, and comes in lengths starting at 2.2m (7’3”) increasing in increments of approximately one metre. The examples illustrated show up to a 6-bay building, but there is no limit to the number of bays that can be put together.

This greenhouse provides room for deep staging along the external side, and a bed or tall staging on the back wall for plants up to 3m (9’10”) tall.

The Traditional Lean-to lends itself very well to walled gardens, or even being built against the side of a house. It needs a reasonably straight, solid rear wall of at least 3.2m (10’6”) high, and may also have one or two solid end walls.

COMMISSION US TO CREATE A UNIQUE GLASSHOUSE, WITH THE STYLE

AND PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS THAT SUIT YOUR REQUIREMENTS

besPoke desiGn service

Raising the garden walls at the corner enabled Marston & Langinger to build a quarter-round corner greenhouse, which also makes a charming garden feature. Ventilation is through the rear walls.

A T-shaped greenhouse used as the central feature for a potager garden on a private estate. The brick-and-flint base combines well with the Juniper-painted woodwork. Inside, it has all-round staging, high-level shelves and hanging baskets.

A 28m (91’) range with a coolhouse, conservatory and this central hothouse incorporating a pool which adds humidity. It is shaded with pinoleum blinds, available on request.

A classical style was chosen for this public greenhouse, which Marston & Langinger designed and built for the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London.

If our Traditional range does not meet your needs, why not use our bespoke service. Our specialist designers can create greenhouses in an infinite variety of styles and sizes, tailored to suit you and your garden.

The examples here show a small sample of the many projects Marston & Langinger have built-to-order for distinguished private clients and public institutions around the world.

If you have a project in mind please get in touch and we can give you an indication of likely costs and arrange a meeting with an M&L designer.

construction featuresBEAUTIFULLY FINISHED RUGGED CONSTRUCTION WITH UNIQUE DETAILS

Timber – Fully seasoned South American cedar from managed forests is used for the construction. The wood is strong and naturally durable, and does not depend on paint or chemical preservatives to prevent it rotting.

Construction – Traditional joinery, with mortice and tenon joints combined with galvanised steel brace and ties, ensures rigidity and long life. Timber components are finished with beads and chamfers.

Gutters – The specially made moulded metal gutters are strong enough to lean a ladder against without damaging the glass. Gutters are usually enamelled to match the woodwork. Matching downpipes are supplied which can discharge onto the ground, or be connected into a soakaway. Increasingly often our clients are collecting rainwater to use for the garden, in which case the pipework can be modified to feed a rainwater storage butt.

Glass – Toughened, clear 4mm glass panes are used with traditional scallop-cut laps. These are secured with long-lasting silicone beads.

Paint – Marstons Premium Paint is used. It comes in 70 colours and lasts for approximately ten years before an additional coat is needed. Greenhouses are pre-finished, and need only touching up after assembly using additional paint provided.

Greenhouse accessories

Clapboard timber bases – These are constructed in cedar with a frame, and clad on the exterior with corner boards. They are quick to install but, unlike brick or stone bases, are not suited to sloping sites and changes of level.

External cedar blinds – Traditional outside blinds prevent the sun from reaching the glass. These are made from natural cedar with copper links and are available for all standard and some made-to order greenhouses.

Greenhouse staging – Rust-resistant galvanised steel trays with wall brackets to allow clear access beneath. Supplied with drain and plug.

Underfloor heating – Finned underfloor pipes with patterned cast-iron grilles. These can also be used for damping down by watering through the grilles to create clouds of steam. A separate heating source and thermostat is required for this.

Cold frames – Matching cedar cold frames are 1040mm (3’5”) square. They are made with scalloped toughened glass, hinged fixing battens and stays (not illustrated).

Ventilation – Through ventilation is provided by side windows, which open to 500mm (1’7½”) on purpose-built stays, and large top-hinged roof vents. The roof vents are thermostatic, and electrically operated and are supplied either with Marston & Langinger’s professional, easy-to-operate controller or a non-electric wax-type opener. Doors are hinged inwards and can be left open in hot weather.

Decorative features – The woodwork has a functional design finished with chamfers, flush beads and mouldings to gable slopes. The Double-pitched Traditional Greenhouse has hand turned timber finials that cover the two ends of the ridge and provide a decorative touch.

The base – A concrete foundation at least 100mm (4”) thick is needed on which to construct the base. Brick or stone base walls give a permanent and solid appearance and blend well in an established setting if reclaimed material is used. They should be constructed by a trained bricklayer or stonemason. Alternatively M&L can supply a clapboard timber base. A setting-out drawing with construction specifications is provided by us.

Site assembly – The components are delivered in sections for assembly on a prepared base (not included in the price of the greenhouse). The construction should be undertaken by a competent, experienced general builder. Alternatively, experienced Marston & Langinger personnel can assemble the parts if preferred.
