MLA/ALA WebinarOctober 28, 2015
Outline• Background to the projects
• LCGFT (Library of Congress Genre/Form Thesaurus) music terms
• LCMPT (Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus) terms
• Other vocabularies that interact with LCGFT & LCMPT
• Best Practices for using the vocabularies in music records
• Examples throughout!
Quick pollAre you primarily a music and/or audiovisual cataloger?

What’s wrong with this?• Variations in practice• Genre/form in different parts of the string ($a or $v or as a
qualifier)• Combined Demographic and Genre/Form terms • Combined Medium of performance and genre/form terms
• Endless combinations available• All combinations are not provided with authority records in
LCSH
The Solution: LCGFT + LCMPT• Collaboration between the Library of Congress, the Music Library Association
Cataloging and Metadata Committee (CMC) Vocabularies Subcommittee and the CMC Genre/Form Task Force• LCMPT terms published February 24, 2014
• 800 published in in initial phase• New terms added through SACO Music Funnel
• LCGFT terms published February 15, 2015• 567 published in initial phase• New terms continue to be added by the task force and Music funnel
Structure
• Thesaurus structure• Top term is “Music”• All terms have at least one BT, except top term• May have more than one BT (Polyhierarchy)
• The relationship between a term and multiple BTs is “and” not “or” (e.g., you cannot have a term whose BTs are “Cat” and “Dog”)
• Avoid terms that simply combine two BTs (e.g. Sacred songs) when possible• No language, demographic, religion, nationality terms, unless inherently part of the genre
name (e.g., Chinese operas vs Children’s songs)
Availability• OCLC Connexion (under ge: or genre)• id.loc.gov (under LCGFT)• Class Web (Search Genre/Form terms)• LC Authorities (as a subject search)

• Music Library Association Subject Access Subcommittee (now Vocabularies Subcommittee) and LC• Instruments, voices, and ensembles—any forces needed to perform
a piece of music• Over 800 terms approved in February 2014; still growing• Most derived in some way from LCSH• Generally lower-case and singular• MARC work to accommodate authority records for terms (162, 462,

MARC Coding for LCMPT
382 – Medium of Performance• 382 field is valid in both bibliographic and authority records• 1st indicator – Usually 0 for Medium of performance; occasionally 1 for
Partial medium of performance• 2nd indicator – Coded 1 in bib records for Intended for access; not
valid in authority records• $a – Medium of performance (where most of the LCMPT terms go)• $b – Soloist (when there is a featured instrument or voice)• $d – Doubling instrument (when a performer plays more than one
instrument
382 – Medium of Performance• $e – New! Number of ensembles • $n – Number of performers of the same medium• $p – Alternative medium of performance• $s – Total number of performers• $v – Note
382 – New developments• New MARC proposals next year will suggest:• A new subfield for total number of ensembles• $3 (Materials specified)• $5 (Institution to which field applies)

Deconstructing LCSH• Aside from genre/form and medium of performance, many LCSH
headings contain information about:
• Creator/contributor characteristics Music by African American composersRock music—Iceland• Audience characteristics Children’s songsMusic for the blind• Time period Operas—18th centuryPopular music—1971-1980• Language Folk songs, FrenchSongs, Vietnamese
Creator/Contributor Characteristics• MARC field 386• New vocabulary: Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT)
• A pilot vocabulary is available through Class Web, but it is not complete and is not currently recommended for use in cataloging.
• Terms from LCSH can be used in the meantime.
386 African Americans $2 lcdgt650 Music by African American composers. • Potential for use beyond what’s in LCSH, but no best practices yet.245 Symphony no. 1 / $c Jean Sibelius386 Finns $2 lcdgt
386 or 370?• For works originating from a particular place, there are two options:• Record Creator/Contributor characteristics in the 386• Record Place of origin of work in the 370 $g
386 Koreans $2 lcgdt (??)370 $g Korea $2 naf (??)650 Music $z Korea
• Look for best practices coming from LC/ALA
Audience Characteristics• MARC field 385• Terms from LCDGT would also apply

The Future of LCSH for Music• MLA-CMC Vocabularies Subcommittee spearheading the effort to develop algorithms
for generating LCMPT/LCGFT/LCDGT terms from LCSH
• LCSH likely to remain in score and sound recording records for some time to come• LCGFT/LCMPT algorithms may never be perfect• Discovery systems need time to catch up
• What about works about music?• Not all LCSH music form/genre/medium headings are topic-friendly (though many are)• What’s the granularity “cutoff”?• LC will eventually cancel headings deemed inappropriate/unneccessary for topical use
• Stay tuned!
For now• Continue to assign LCSH in bibliographic records• Adding LCMPT and LCGFT terms to your original records is highly
encouraged• In RDA or AACR2 records!
• Adding LCMPT and LCGFT terms to records you upgrade when copy cataloging is also encouraged• Other fields (046, 370, 385, 386, 388) are available for use, but keep
an eye out for emerging best practices• Descriptive Cataloging Manual, Z1 guidelines are a good starting point for now• LCDGT is still in a “beta” phase
