AWARD SEASON: Arkansas Travelers first baseman Joey Curletta was named Texas League Player of the Year in a vote of the league’s managers, coaches and media members. Voted as the starting first baseman on the North Division squad at the league’s midseason All-Star game, Curletta has provided many dramatic moments this season. He homered in the opening inning of the Travs winner-take-all first half title clinching win at NW Arkansas on June 19. Three times this season he has belted a pair of homers in a game, including July 17 at Tulsa when his second blast put the Travs on top in the ninth inning of an eventual victory. Curletta hit tying three-run shot in the ninth inning of comeback win at home over Corpus Christi on April 10 and a go-ahead grand slam on August 11 in the seventh inning of a victory over Midland. A 24-year old from Phoenix, Arizona, Curletta had played in only 32 games at the Double-A level prior to this season. This year he became the first Traveler to hit 20 or more homers since Randal Grichuk in 2013. He is on pace to become the first Arkansas player to lead the league in homers since Corey Smith in 2008 and the first to lead the TL in runs batted in since Mike Napoli in 2005. The last Trav to be selected as the league’s Player of the Year was Alex Yarbrough in 2014. Curletta was acquired by the Seattle Mariners from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for SHP Pat Venditte in March of 2017. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2012 draft out of Mountain Pointe High School. MORE HARDWARE: Arkansas Travelers first baseman Joey Curletta and relief pitcher Matt Festa were named to the Texas League Postseason All-Star team. Curletta, who was voted the league’s player of the year, has been the team’s top hitter throughout the season ranking among the league leaders in nearly every offensive category. Festa has been the Travelers top reliever, converting a Texas League best 19 saves. Festa, a 25-year old native of Staten Island, New York, paces the circuit in saves with 20 in 21 opportunities including converting his first 18 of the season. He is the first Traveler to save 20 games in a season since Joel Peralta in 2003 and the first to lead the league in saves since Steve Montgomery (36) in 1995. Twice this season, he has been called up to the Major Leagues making a pair of appearances for Seattle. Festa was drafted by the Mariners in the seventh round of the 2016 draft out of East Stroudsburg University. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Arkansas Travelers center fielder Braden Bishop was named Texas League Player of the Month for June it was announced by Minor League Baseball. Bishop hit .379 (39x103) with 24 runs scored, 8 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 2 HBP, 10 walks and 1 stolen baes in 24 games. He led the Texas League in average (.379), runs (24), hits (39), total bases (56), and on-base percentage (.443). Bishop finished 2ndnd in doubles (8) and OPS (.987) and 3rd in extra-base hits (11). For the season, Bishop is batting .289 (95x329) with 67 runs scored, 20 doubles, 7 home runs, 31 RBI, 3 HBP, 36 walks and 4 stolen bases in 79 games. Since May 5 he has raised his season average from a season-low .154 averge to his current .289 average. Bishop was voted as a Texas League midseason All-Star and was the starting centerfielder for the North Division as well as being named a league player of the week earlier this season. Off the field, he is renowned for creating and promoting the 4Mom charity to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease after his mother’s diagnosis in 2014. He was the fifth round selection of the Mariners in 2015 out of the University of Washington. Bishop, 24, was selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Washington. PDC EXTRENSION: The Seattle Mariners announced the extension of the Player Development Contract with the Arkansas Travelers, the Mariners Double-A affiliate in the Texas League. The Player Development Contract, which would have run out at the end of this season, has been extended to cover the 2019-2020 seasons. The Travelers won the Texas League North First Half Division title and join the Everett AquaSox on being the first two Mariners affiliates to claim a postseason berth in 2018. As the first half North Division champions, the Travs will host the opening two games of the division series at Dickey-Stephens Park on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6.
