The Coral Springs City Commission is proud of the dedicated volunteers on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee who have worked diligently to keep Dr. King’s memory alive in this City for the past 26 years. The youth programs they have designed, as well as the Scholarship Program awarded to financially needy high school students, are examples of their hard work and selflessness. Today, the MLK Monument Committee unveils the new monument at the Northwest Regional Library in memory of Dr. King and those who have been brave enough to stand on behalf of the people to demand their rights. The Raven Black monument stands for the Rainbow coalition, and Dr. King’s dignity, teachings and strength. Each year, the City of Coral Springs remembers the teachings of Dr. King. His life and works have shaped the future of this country, and it is important that we never forget his impact on the world. We honor Dr. King for showing us that America is stronger when we come together as one in spite of our difference in color, ethnicity or beliefs. A great way to come together is through acts of service and we encourage everyone to find a worthy cause. Our community is what it is today because of so many volunteers who dedicate their time. We want to thank everyone who helped make this event a success, and above all, our heartiest congratulations to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee on another well-planned event. We appreciate all you do to help make Coral Springs such a wonderful place.

A Message from Henry Andre, Chair, MLK, Jr. CommitteeThis year marks our 26th annual celebration where we have followed the ground work laid down by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and various others who continue to strive for a community of people where we can live, work, and play to make a difference. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”.

It has been a banner year where we had the good fortune to see a monument erected to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy for all to enjoy and learn in the City of Coral Springs.

Our theme this year “Continuing our Commitment to Equality & Peace – 25 Years and Beyond” is exemplified by the community in which we live. As a community we show the world how diverse we are by coming together to erect this monument.

Many years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left an impression on me where I felt it was my duty to share my servitude to others and follow in the wisdom of his teachings.

As a committee, our goal has been to show how one scholarship can play an important part for a young person starting their journey of higher education. They can take comfort knowing that a portion of their bill is paid for, in part, via a scholarship.

My sincere appreciation to all the members of the MLK committee, who continue to work in cooperation with various other committee members of the City of Coral Springs to see that we not only follow in the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but take the lead in treating each other with dignity and respect. Serving as Chair of the Coral Springs MLK Committee for the past year has been a very esteemed and privileged opportunity for me in educating those seeking a way to give back to the community.

Dari was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1957. Her art works are to be found in private and corporate collections both locally and internationally (United States, Germany, Belgium, Britain, France, Israel, Canada and Poland). Her commissions include works for various Members of the Parliament in Africa. Dari’s painting of the Signal Hill shrine is housed in the Bo Kaap Museum, Cape Town.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument, by artist Dari, expresses the artist’s views and feelings on Civil Rights through sculpture and painting. The Lac Du Bonnett pillar (coral colored granite) stands for equality, freedom of speech, unity and democracy. The Base is made of Mesabi Black granite, which is also featured in other projects including the Wall of Remembrance at Eagle Circle. The Raven Black monument stands for the Rainbow coalition, and Dr. King’s dignity, teachings and strength. This piece honors the memory of Dr. King and those who have been brave enough to stand on behalf of the people to demand their rights. Coldspring Granite Company from Minnesota fabricated the memorial piece, which is 10 feet tall and 9 feet wide, and weighs over 13,000 lb. The monument, which is

placed outside the Northwest Regional Library, located on University Drive, will be a permanent reminder of 25 years of this Community’s dedication to the legacy of Dr. King in Coral Springs. The Unveiling and Dedication takes place today - the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the past 26 years the City of Coral Springs Martin Luther King Committee has dedicated itself to living the Dreams of Dr. Martín Luther King, Jr. Past MLK programs have featured Congressmen, Astronauts, Authors, and other Dignitaries to speak to our community. They have inspired us to live the words and dreams of Martin Luther King. For the last 20 years, the MLK Committee has sponsored a Literary and Art contest where more than 5000 of our children think with their creative minds and dedicate their hearts to peace and equality. The MLK Scholarship has granted more than $300,000 in College Scholarships to our students in need. Our “It’s a Day On, Not a Day off” Leadership/Diversity program has educated more than 4000 high school and middle school students to dedicate their leadership skills to the words of Dr. King.

After 26 years of dedication, teaching, honoring, and most of all, putting into ACTION the messages of Dr. King, The Coral Springs MLK Monument Committee welcomes you to the dedication of the magnificent Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monument, honoring our past and respecting our future. We hope you will cherish this space as a place to love one another and learn about diversity, tolerance and equality.

This monument is a dedication by our entire community that, forever, WE will make every effort to see each other “not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.”

We are proud to announce that Mr. Alphonso Jackson will be our Keynote Speaker for the 2016 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. With a lifetime of engagement on national issues, from his participation in the Selma-to-Montgomery March in 1965 to his service in the cabinet, Secretary Jackson brings a breath of leadership skills and valuable personal experience in the field of social issues and civil rights.

Former Secretary Jackson, who received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Truman State University and a Law Degree from Washington University School of Law, began his professional career in St. Louis as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. In 1977, he was named the City’s Director of Public Safety. He became Executive Director of the St. Louis Housing Authority four years later, a job he held until 1983.

His rising profile earned him the attention of officials in Washington, and in 1987 he was made the Director of the U.S. Department of Public and Assisted Housing for Washington, D.C. Nominated by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Mr. Jackson served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 2004 to 2008. In nominating Jackson, President George W. Bush chose a leader with a strong background in housing and community development, expertise in finance and management, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of all Americans.

Apart from his professional career, which earned him several awards, Mr. Jackson has a long history of involvement in the struggle for civil rights. Dr. King served as a beacon of hope to him, one that influenced him on a very personal level, because of his dreams for a better, more equal America. This is what inspired Mr. Jackson to recruit students for the voter registration march from Selma to Montgomery. He heard the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Montgomery State House after he marched with him and so many other courageous, inspirational leaders on that historical day.

Mr. Jackson has seen humanity at its best and at its worst. The struggle for human dignity taught him just how important it is to uphold the principles of equality and justice for all. He came to understand that every person – regardless of race, religion, or beliefs – is entitled to the promise of America and the right to pursue their dreams.

Today, Mr. Jackson serves as a Senior Advisor at First Data.

Secretary Jackson and his wife Marcia are the parents of two grown daughters.

PAST CELEBRATIONSThe City of Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee has hosted a celebration for the past twenty-six years in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The City Commission responded very favorably to a request from a group of local residents and clergy representatives in 1991 asking that the City consider hosting a memorial event in honor of their fellow clergyman, Dr. King. A group of community volunteers took on this challenge, and each year the event has drawn an increasing number of attendees from the tri-county area of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The festivities appeal to every segment of the population — students, families, seniors and business professionals.

In addition to the City’s support, the event has received community support through sponsorships from private and non-profit agencies alike. Ever since the inception, Citibank came forward with a commitment to become the title sponsor for the Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and has remained our strongest supporter for the past 25 years. The City’s event has been graced with the presence of renowned national personalities as keynote speakers such as Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, Wil Haygood, Joan Higginbotham, Willie Gary, Bacardi Jackson, Congressman John Lewis, Thomas W. The City of Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee is pleased to announce that it is once again joining the Coral Springs Community Chest to offer scholarships to high school seniors who are Coral Springs residents with demonstrated financial need. The program seeks students who, through their words and actions, embrace the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings on civil rights, non-violence, peace, racial harmony, community service and bettering the lives of others. These non-renewable scholarships are offered without regard to race, creed, color, sex, religion or national origin. Committee members are actively soliciting donations for next year’s scholarship program. Please help us carry on this worthwhile mission.
