MLOC Productions presents

Brief history of MLOC

MLOC Productions Incorporated is a non-professional, not-for-profit organisation administered by a Board of Management and assisted by volunteers.

MLOC was first established as the Mordialloc Philharmonic Society in 1945, operating as a choral society until the 1970s when, as the Mordialloc Musical Society, the group began staging full musical comedy productions. From 1985, as an incorporated association, the group has been known as the Mordialloc Light Opera Company and, from 1992, as MLOC Productions Incorporated.

MLOC's aims and objectives

The aims and objectives of MLOC Productions Inc. can be summarised as follows:

• To provide opportunities for the residents of the City of Kingston and neighbouring cities to participate on stage as performers in the presentation of quality musical theatre and concert entertainment

• To provide opportunities for the residents of the City of Kingston and neighbouring cities to participate off stage in valued front of house, back stage and production roles in the presentation of quality musical theatre and concert entertainment

• To provide quality entertainment to the residents of the City of Kingston and neighbouring cities and provide opportunities for them to attend our productions at very affordable prices

• To provide a training platform and source of practical experience for persons (students and others) who are seeking professional careers in theatre and theatre craft.

MLOC Productions Inc is a member of the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria. The generous support of the City of Kingston is gratefully acknowledged by MLOC.

MLOC's functional locations MLOC's activities take place at the following locations: 1) Rehearsals — Parkdale Church of Christ, Como Parade, Parkdale - twice a week, (Tuesday

& Thursday). Weekend rehearsal – various venues 2) Set construction/storage & costumes — CLOCworks (at rear), 230 Kingston Road Heatherton 3) Shows – Shirley Burke Theatre, 46 Parkers Road Parkdale Membership of MLOC Any member of the community with an interest in performing on stage, assisting off stage or learning stagecraft is eligible and can apply for membership. MLOC's members have, at times, ranged in age from children under ten to adults in their eighties. The annual membership fee is $40 adult and $30 concession.

Student membership (same rate as concession) applies to persons who are full time students and can prove their full time student status.

Being part of the cast of ‘Rock Of Ages’

Show fees are $190 ($175 concession) payable by all members of the cast. Show fees are used to insure you against injury during your participation in the show, so it is very important for your own wellbeing that they are paid. The show fee includes your MLOC membership fee and a $40 refundable deposit for your rehearsal material. A show t-shirt is also included. You may “upgrade” to a show hoodie for an extra $35 or order both a t-shirt and hoodie for an extra $65. Show fees are payable at the first rehearsal. No exceptions!

Cast members need to attend all rehearsals unless they are told specifically they are not required. Included in this pack is a rehearsal schedule. You need to let us know when you audition if you are already involved in an activity that will preclude you from attending any of the scheduled rehearsals. This will allow the production team to plan around your absence. Being absent from too many rehearsals is not only unfair to your fellow cast members, but also may mean your exclusion from the show. In the event that you will be absent from a rehearsal due to sickness, or some other unforeseen event, you can let the production team know via phone call or SMS.

There will be attendance sheets at each rehearsal and each show at the theatre, which you will need to sign as you arrive. This is primarily for Workplace Health and Safety reasons. Should we need to evacuate the venue for any reason, we need to know who is present.

There will also be flyers available which you can use to publicise the show to your family and friends. Most non-professional companies, such as MLOC, rely upon the cast to sell tickets, so it’s in your interests to publicise the show as much as possible.

There are a range of social events which are planned for the new show which we encourage you to partake in to allow you to get to know your fellow cast members.

Should you have skills in other areas, including set construction and painting, costuming, marketing, etc. we would love to hear from you. We are always looking for help with these aspects of producing our shows.

About the show It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net hairspray, lycra and leg warmers, lace, leather, love and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary club venues, the Bourbon Room, owned and managed by local icons Dennis Dupre and Lonnie Barnett. This is the place where rock god, sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew Boley longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherrie Christian, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherrie and the gang save the strip–and themselves–before it's too late? Only the music of hit 80’s bands; Styx, Twisted Sister, REO Speedwagon, Whitesnake and more, hold the answer. Audit ion Requirements Please bring your completed audit ion form with you to your audit ion, along with a basic theatre resume and a current headshot with you for the production team to keep.

Book your audition slot online http://mloc.org.au/rockofages/

Vocal Audit ions Please prepare two contrasting songs in the style of the show but not from the show. Please note: you should perform your strongest song first as second songs are often not required. This is a rock musical, not a musical theatre style show. Other rock musicals include We Will Rock You, Tommy, American Idiot, Bare, Rent, Hair, Hedwig, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors and many more. Your audition piece can also be a voice-suitable rock song from any era. However, please feel free to audition with any song with which you feel comfortable and best shows your performance ability.

• Please bring with you a backing track for your audition. The track must not have any vocals (including backing vocals). We will have equipment to play from iPhones and Android phones. Backing tracks are encouraged, however, if you are relying on piano accompaniment please prepare sheet music in correct key for audition pianist

- It is possible we may cut your song off so if you have a great finish you definitely want us to

hear, start somewhere in the middle - For the same reason, if the song is very long, please know the time at which you need to

start/finish the backing track - Yes, you can accompany yourself during the audition. We encourage you to let us know if

you can play any instrument for possible inclusion in the show. - A range check or harmony check may be done at audition or call-backs

The roles are open to all ages and looks. If you can be the role, then you are in with a chance. Remember that casting is NOT about how talented you are, sometimes the most talented people are not cast because the fit is not right. It is about matching people to the role and to each other to

Page 5: MLOC Productions presentsmloc.org.au/mloc_uploads/ROA/ROA-Audition-Pack.pdf- We are there to support you, not judge you. We know auditions are nerve wracking but try to enjoy it. We

create a cohesive cast. Reminders for audit ionees:

- Don’t tell us about your cold, everyone says that, and we can hear it anyway - Be confident in your audition. Perform to us, don’t just sing - We are there to support you, not judge you. We know auditions are nerve wracking but try

to enjoy it. We want you to do well. - If you don’t get the role you want, try again! - We are looking for people who will bond together and support each other to create an

amazing show but also to create a great community and lifetime memories for you and the audience.

Acting Audit ions Dialogue from the show will be available at the audition. Consider arriving early to read through. We recommend finding a quiet place to read out loud the dialogue, it helps more than you think to get your mouth and tongue around the words. Even ask anyone around to listen to you and you listen to them read. Its all about collaboration and team building. Dance Audit ions (compulsory) Everyone is required at the dance audition. It will start with a movement audition and progress to a more advanced dance audition. Everyone is required at the movement audition and you are welcome to stay for the advanced session and drop out when you feel you have gone as far as you can. We really need to know your movement ability. We can use people of varying movement abilities so get in there and give it a go. On the day:

- Wear loose clothing - Jazz runners or sneakers - Bring water with you - Ensure you notify the choreographer of any special talents (EG: pole dancing, burlesque,

acrobatics) - Do your best but don’t overdo, look after yourself

Call Backs (if required)

- Call backs will be notified. - Not being called back does not mean you did not get a role, sometimes it is not required - If you are called back, not attending may take you out of the casting decision - Call back will include vocals from the show and dialogue, often with other cast to try out

matching and chemistry, so interacting and getting to know each other is important.

We want you to do well, so try to relax and enjoy the process. Preparation is key Cast Announcement Phone calls are made by committee a few days after call backs and we cannot do public announcements till everyone (successful or otherwise) is notified so please answer your phone during this period or return messages.

Rehearsal Attendance Rock of Ages is a very busy show for everyone (a couple of leads excepted) and ensemble are in nearly every song and will be on stage nearly the entire show, so please be available for all listed rehearsals and commit to attendance. Please note that some cast may be required for additional character development workshops on some Sundays in Edithvale. This will be discussed further during the season. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS LEAD ROLES DREW BOLEY Drew works at the legendary Bourbon Room waiting for his big break and for his dreams to come true. He is instantly attracted to Sherrie, the new arrival from the Midwest who encourages him to go after his dreams. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl. “I wanna rock!” Appealing good-looking rocker with a boyish charm and vulnerability. Good comedic timing and strong rock tenor voice. Advantage: play guitar (even air guitar) (Vocal Range: Bb3-D5) Plays similar age to Sherrie SHERRIE CHRISTIAN A pretty, fresh-faced from the mid-West, who steps off the bus into the bright lights of downtown Los Angeles seeking stardom. Instantly attracted to Drew who comes to her aid when she is mugged on the Strip. Her dreams are shattered, and she ends up working as a Venus Club. “You gave me your heart, but words to you were lies” Strong acting (she has the clearest character arc) and comedic timing, strong rock belt, good movement, good harmony. Advantage: comfortable in revealing costumes (Vocal Range: G3-F5 Mezzo) Plays similar age to Drew LONNY BARNETT Lonny is the manager of the Bourbon Room and the narrator of the story who ‘breaks the fourth wall’. He is charming with a vibrant, ‘out there’ personality, the type of guy with who it would be fun to spend a drunken night. Lonny is two characters in this show. He is the very important narrator who holds the audience’s attention and tells the jokes and he is also the ‘mother’ of the Bourbon Room family. “You know what I mean, you little Playbill-holding freak machine” Very strong comedic timing and improvisation skills and strong rock vocals. Advantage: Stage presence and charisma and ability to make connections with the audience (Vocal Range: D3-D5 Tenor) Age can be flexible DENNIS DUPREE Dennis is the owner of the Bourbon Room. He’s a bit of a stoner, who’s been around a bit. He has been in a band or two, might be a Vietnam vet. He’s not sure if he should sell the club to the German developers or fight to keep it. A nice guy with a past that haunts his present. He has formed a family unit with Lonnie and Drew and the regulars at the Bourbon Club. “You remember when you ….. that baby llama?” Bari-tenor rock vocals. Advantage: strong comedic timing (Vocal Range: D3-G4) Plays old enough to have seen a lot of the world

Page 7: MLOC Productions presentsmloc.org.au/mloc_uploads/ROA/ROA-Audition-Pack.pdf- We are there to support you, not judge you. We know auditions are nerve wracking but try to enjoy it. We

STACEE JAXX Stacee is the lead singer of the highly successful hair/metal-rock band Arsenal who has decided to go solo and has ‘artistic’ differences with his bandmates who hate him. He has the typical big ego of a charismatic rock star. Self-important and intriguing in all the wrong ways. He is the ultimate bad boy, all about sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. “And the sushi in the Midwest! Did you know there’s no oceans there?” Great strong comedic timing and strong rock tenor voice. Advantage: Can play sexy on stage whether he is or is not (Vocal Range: C3-Eb5 Tenor) Age flexible JUSTICE CHARLIER Strong stage presence, charismatic with an easy sensuality. She was once a performer but now operates the Venus strip club where Sherrie winds up working. Takes on a maternal role for the girls that work for her – they call her Mama. Think Tina Turner or Cher strength. “Even sang backup on a few hit records” Strong, soulful vocals and belt needed. (Vocal Range: G3-Db5 Mezzo/Alto) Plays old enough to have been around West Hollywood during the disco era HERTZ KLINEMANN An older German male. Uptight, cold, intimidating businessman trying to buy up the Strip to develop it into shopping mall. He is the villain of the story but learns to connect with his son, Franz. “Clean, efficient living” Good comedic timing and baritone vocals. German accent required. (Vocal Range: F3-G#4 Baritone) Plays old enough to be Franz’s father FRANZ KLINEMANN Hertz’s dandyish son. Franz is shy and gentle with a big heart but pressured and intimidated by his father. He would rather be running a candy shop back in Hamburg. “I’m not gay, I’m just German” Strong vocals and excellent comedic timing. German accent (Vocal Range: Db3-E5 Tenor) Plays similar age to Regina. REGINA MCKAIG Regina is the ultimate protestor and a bit of a hippie. She is fighting to save Sunset Strip against the attempted takeover of the Strip and to save rock and roll. She is a leader, a fighter who never gives up. She also supports Franz to help him stand up to his overbearing father Hertz. “Power to the Proletariat” Good comedic timing and very strong belt vocals. (Vocal Range: A3-Eb5 Mezzo/Alto) Plays similar age to Franz. SUPPORTING ROLES (also appear with the ensemble) JA'KEITH GILL Boy band agent who lures Drew away from the Bourbon Room with a promise to make him a star. Will also appear as a member of the ensemble. A strong character actor with good comedic timing, strong rock bari-tenor. (Vocal Range: D3-B4 Bari/Tenor) Age open

Will also appear as a member of the ensemble. Featured singer with some dialogue. Strong vocals with strong rock belt. Alto. JOEY PRIMO Joey is a massive Arsenal and Stacee Jaxx fan who eventually replaces Stacee as Arsenal’s lead singer. Will also appear as a member of the ensemble. A young male with the rocker sensibility, strong rock tenor and strong/dance/movement ability. Tenor. GIRL TRIO (Sapphire, Destiny, Angel) Three featured, sassy female dancers / strippers. Must be comfortable in very skimpy/sexy clothing. Strong dancers proficient in jazz and modern, who work well together. Rock of Ages… … is a juke box musical that uses the rock hits of the late 80’s by the glam rock groups to bring fun and rock to the stage. It takes you back to the time of the big rock bands with the big egos playing big guitar solos with even bigger hair. Note: the musical differs from the 2012 movie which changed the plotline and some of the characters, moderated the jokes and as in most movie musicals took out the ensemble. The stage version is vastly superior to the movie version. Act One
