A Test of Match FitnessColorado is back after missing five games due to a COVID-19 outbreak amongst the team. The Rapids returned on Saturday night away at Kansas City, falling 4-0 to Peter Vermes’ side. The lack of match fitness and the absence of midfielder Kellyn Acosta – who was suspended due to yellow card accumulation – worked against Colorado in its first game back. Despite the latest result, the Rapids have been successful on the road this season and will carry the excitement of their return to Allianz Field. The Loons will look to capitalize on and control the midfield space over a Rapids midfield that lacks bite. This game will be a good test for both sides in MNUFC and the Rapids – who are both recently back on their feet – to battle for a full 90.
A Reward for Schoenfeld, MNUFCWith the race for playoff spots out West growing tighter by the day, Minnesota United came into its second game of the season against FC Cincinnati in need of three points to edge them up the table. Given Cincy’s struggles this year, it seemed like a golden opportunity, and yet MNUFC struggled to find their footing early against an aggressive home side who pushed on offense and pressed on defense. It would take until the very death of the game for the Loons to find the back of the net to pull ahead 1-0 and walk away with a much-needed win on the road.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTESRecap: Stoppage Time Schoenfeld Goal Gives MNUFC Three Points in CincinnatiWith the race for playoff spots out West growing tighter by the day, Minnesota United came into its second game of the season against FC Cincinnati in need of three points to edge them up the table.
Head Coach Adrian Heath on Colorado and what to expect given the unique nature of their situation“It’s been a really tough stretch for them. There’s no getting away from that. But, they’ll obviously be better for that game at the weekend. Obviously, going to Kansas is never easy, they’re a very, very good team. The league table doesn’t lie, that’s why they’re at the top of the table. It was always going to be a sort of baptism by fire, if you like, for them to get back on. Not only back playing, but back on the road away at Kansas. I think they’ll actually be better for that 90 minutes under their belt. And, Robin [Fraser] has done a great job since he’s been there. We expect them to come and be difficult because they are in a situation like us where every point now is precious in this last little couple of weeks of the season.”
Midfielder Jan Gregus on getting back out on the field after leaving for international duty with Slovakia“I was very happy. Of course I had to stay in quarantine for a few days so I had to train alone with Sean [McAuley] and Ian [Fuller] but it was great sessions. Happy to be back with the team and happy that we won the game.”
Forward Aaron Schoenfeld on his first goal with MNUFC“I’m just happy to win. We all know the position we’re in, a tight race to get into the playoffs, and we knew we had to start getting three points in a couple games. So I’m just happy to help the team get some momentum going forward.”again, talking about the field, the surface will be different. So, it will be a different game. But, I think we’ll be ready for it.”

Group stage games will count in the MLS regular season standings and the tournament winner will earn a spot in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, replacing the berth previously awarded to the MLS regular season points leader in the conference opposite of the 2020 Supporters’ Shield winner.
Group assignments for each of the 26 teams were determined through a live draw on June 11, with Minnesota United being drawn into Group D alongside Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City and the Colorado Rapids. Similar to a FIFA World Cup format, the tournament will feature a continuous schedule of games nearly every day, with games beginning at 8 a.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. CDT. After 16 consecutive days of group stage games, the top two teams from each group along with the four best third-place finishers will move on to the knockout stage. The knockout stage will include Round-of-16, Quarterfinals, and Semifinals rounds, as well as the Championship match on August 11. Games tied at the end of regulation in the knockout phase will proceed directly to a penalty kick shootout.
In addition to games that count in the regular season standings and the Champions League berth, players will have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses as part of a $1.1 million prize pool.
The substitution limit for the tournament will follow the new protocol set by the IFAB and allow five substitutions per game. In addition, teams may name up to 23 players on each official gameday roster. Also, the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) will have access to video review for all games.
Upon completion of the MLS is Back Tournament, MLS plans to continue its regular season with a revised schedule in home markets, followed by the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and the 25th MLS Cup. The schedule will be developed at a later date. The final number of games and the schedule for the remainder of the 2020 MLS regular season will be announced in the coming weeks.
The MLS medical department and the league’s infectious disease experts have developed a comprehensive COVID-19 testing plan which will be implemented for the entire MLS is Back Tournament. In addition, MLS will make a contribution of serology (antibody) tests to Central Florida residents beginning June 18.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 26 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and teams in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Starting in 2019, the league adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on to the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
