Hanford Nuclear Reservation was estab-lished in 1943 as a part of the Manhattan Project. For more than thirty years, it was a prominent producer of nuclear munitions for the United States and a symbolic institution of the Cold War. Today, Hanford is not only a contaminated relic of the past; it is also the focus of the world’s largest environmental cleanup project.

Previously, Fluor Hanford employees would enter the site and take as many photographs as possible for inspection purposes. But with such a large and complex facility, standard photography left unavoidable gaps in the forensic record. And when questions or

concerns arose, Fluor Hanford employees had to re-enter the contaminated site to find answers.

Fluor Hanford needed a more comprehen-sive, efficient and safe way to document and inspect the KE Basins.

> S O L U T I O N

After trying 360° still imagery to document and inspect Hanford facilities, which was too labor intensive and provided inadequate coverage, Fluor Hanford sought the tech-nologies and services of Immersive Media. The world leader and only end-to-end provider of 360°, full motion, interactive videos, Immersive Media offered a solution that would significantly improve Hanford decommissioning efforts.

Before the water barrier is removed from a basin, Fluor Hanford employees now conduct a walkthrough using a Dodeca® 2360 camera system. first responders improve emergency plan-ning, crisis management, live event monitor-ing, crime surveillance, operations briefing and workforce training.

Only one question remained: how to acquire such an inordinate amount of county details and real-time visual information.

> S O L U T I O N

The world leader and only end-to-end pro-vider of 360°, full motion, interactive videos, Immersive Media offered the technologies and know-how to improve SCPO’s situational awareness, planning and response.

SCPO has documented the county’s critical infrastructure and roads using an Immersive Media Dodeca® 2360 camera system, which captures high-resolution video from every direction simultaneously. The county has also placed Dodeca 2360 cameras in key locations for real-time crime surveillance, event monitoring and crowd management.

In addition to full viewing control, Immersive Media videos offer full GPS, ESRI and ArcGIS capabilities. This gives SCPO leaders precise details related to locations and distances as well as interactive, 360° visual information.

Full GPS, ESRI and ArcGIS capabilities help Somerset County prosecutors recreate crime scenes and portray key events with precise location, distance and timing details.

Home of wealthy industrialists and promi-nent pharmaceutical companies, Somerset County is often on the frontlines when it comes to public demonstrations and protests. And in today’s heated and fragile political climate, public safety and response planning are more critical than ever.

Already operating at peak capacity, SCPO needed a way to acquire more detailed, accurate information of its facilities and infrastructure. It also wanted a better view and understanding of crime-heavy environ-ments and “hotspots” where public demon-strations and events occur. Such information would help county leaders, planners and

PUBLIC SAFETY

> B E N E F I T S

Immersive Media technologies have aided SCPO on a number of fronts. 360°, interactive videos of county facilities and infrastructure have improved preventative security, emer-gency preparedness and tactical planning. With more accurate details related to chokepoints, access areas, evacuation routes and high-risk environments, county leaders can develop enhanced operational plans and make better, faster decisions.

Having Immersive Media cameras in key hot-spots helps monitor public events and crime activity. This not only gives an unparalleled, real-time perspective for first responders and law enforcement teams, it also aids the justice process. County prosecutors use the 360° videos in court proceedings as visual evidence and to recreate crime scenes and portray key events. Jurors can be virtually placed at the scene, with GPS coordinates and timing details to determine specific locations, distances or moments in time.

SCPO is also utilizing the videos for training, simulation and briefing purposes, giving its forces a real-world understanding of situations, locations and procedures before operations commence.

Perhaps the most surprising and welcome benefit of Immersive Media technologies has been the reduction in SCPO’s operational

expenses. Because the videos are captured once and in high-resolution detail, less time and money is spent documenting, analyzing, storing and accessing visual archives. And county planners, emergency responders, law enforcement teams and prosecutors are more efficient in their day-to-day operations.

“Immersive Media technology has revolu-tionized the way our office conducts its operations, approaches incidents and communicates internally, interdepartmen-tally and within the legal system,” says Chief Ronald Thornburg of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office. “Our investigation efforts are more focused, time is saved and crises are better managed due to the rich quality of visual information Immersive Media videos capture.”

B ased in Calgary, Alberta, U.S.I. Project Services Inc. offers

consultation, survey and project management services for the Canadian energy industry and other markets. The company helps engineering and construction teams with exploration, surveys, mapping, site investigation, feasibility studies and project execution.

U.S.I. prides itself on smart solutions to common industry challenges. As such, it is continuously looking for ways to boost the efficiency and reduce the costs of its operations.

> C H A L L E N G E

U.S.I. routinely operates in remote, rugged environments. The company facilitates the planning, construction and maintenance of pipelines and telecommunications infra-structure. It conducts surveys for forestry departments and environmental agencies. And it facilitates the development and review of roads and other transportation links.

The time and cost of accessing, document-ing and evaluating these isolated locations can be exorbitant. Taking a crew of sur-veyors, engineers and specialists into the heart of the Canadian backcountry is one

thing; taking them multiple times to multiple locations to gather additional details and determine unanswered questions can put project budgets and timelines at risk.

U.S.I. wanted a more efficient and cost-effective way to document and examine these remote environments. Doing so would enable the company to positively impact the bottom line of its projects and pass the time and cost savings to its clients.

> S O L U T I O N

To improve its operations, U.S.I. tapped the technologies and services of Immersive Media. The world leader and only end-to-end provider of 360°, full motion, interac-tive videos, Immersive Media offered an innovative way to map and analyze outlying locations—quickly, cost-effectively and with unprecedented detail.

U.S.I. now affixes a Dodeca® 2360 camera system to a helicopter using an Immersive Media helicopter mount to film low-altitude aerial footage of pipeline routes and other terrain. Immersive Media’s flagship product, the Dodeca 2360 captures high-resolution video from every direction simultaneously. > B E N E F I T S

360° aerial videos from Immersive Media have helped U.S.I. improve the efficiency, cost and quality of its projects. By document-ing long stretches of remote, rugged terrain with a helicopter-mounted camera, the company saves a significant amount of time. More than 400 kilometers of a proposed pipeline route, for example, can be filmed in less than three hours.

Once filmed, the 360° video footage is always available and easily accessed from U.S.I.’s archives. Stakeholders have a comprehen-sive, geo-referenced view of project terrain from a variety of perspectives—even if they have never been “on location.” The videos have helped streamline and improve the analysis of proposed project sites, alternate routes and environmental impact. They have aided development and maintenance efforts. And they have been useful for construction bids, public consultations and regulatory compliance audits.

Immersive Media technologies have also reduced the cost of U.S.I.’s operations. In

capturing high-resolution, 360° aerial foot-age via helicopter, multiple visits to multiple remote locations is no longer required. Travel expenses have been minimized, U.S.I. specialists are more productive and work crews can be placed on higher yield projects.

“Immersive Media videos addressed the need to be able to constantly access and view data from satellite locations,” says Mike Kras-man, Vice President of Operations for U.S.I.

Red Bull expands its global brand via experiential marketing

R ed Bull is a popular topic of discussion in business, academic

and marketing circles. How does a little-known energy drink from Austria become one of the world’s most promi-nent brands?

“Until 1987, nobody thought that a functional drink previously unknown in the western world, packaged in a can and sold at a pre-mium price would ever stand a chance,” the company’s Web site states. “What counts is what the consumer envisions about Red Bull when he holds a can in his hands. And this, thanks to strong marketing efforts, sets Red Bull distinctly apart from all its competitors.”

> C H A L L E N G E

Red Bull is one of the most aggressive brand marketers on the planet. Its advertising and marketing programs branch well beyond pure product pitches. The company is heavily involved with extreme sports, such as snowboarding, windsurfing, skateboarding and cliff-diving. Red Bull sponsors a range of mainstream and alternative athletes. It hosts distinctive events such as Red Bull Flugtag and the Red Bull Air Race World

Championship. The company owns several professional racing and soccer teams. And it has even used breakdancing, art shows, popular music and video games as market-ing vehicles.

To promote its products and extend its brand, Red Bull purveys a lifestyle; one that is centered on energy, vitality, adrenaline and excitement.

The challenge, of course, is how to effectively convey this lifestyle to a diverse, global con-sumer base. More than a promise or an idea, Red Bull strives to make this lifestyle real. Make it compelling. And make it attainable.

> S O L U T I O N

To help consumers experience the Red Bull lifestyle, and to launch its new redbullsurf-ing.com site, Red Bull tapped the cutting edge video technology of Immersive Media. The world leader and only end-to-end provider of 360°, full motion, interactive videos, Immersive Media helps companies deliver deep, engaging online experiences to promote their brands and products.

In launching its new surfing site, Red Bull wanted to give consumers the feeling of being on a surfboard—as if they were par-

Improving situational awareness and route reconnaissance

T ransportation and supply routes are critical for every military

force in every theater of combat. For U.S. Army teams operating in Iraq and Afghanistan, these routes are also extremely dangerous.

To protect its personnel and equipment, the U.S. Army is constantly seeking to improve the reconnaissance and surveillance of key battlefield roads and pathways. Doing so can make the difference between life and death.

> C H A L L E N G E

Now more than ever, wars are being waged in urban, civilian environments. In Iraq and Afghanistan, for example, battles and dangerous encounters often occur in streets and back alleys. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and surprise attacks are com-mon, placing troops, civilians and military equipment at risk.

Fully understanding an environment—including accessibility, risks, blind spots, evacuation routes and the enemy’s previous tactics in the area—before placing human lives at risk is a key mandate for the U.S.

Army and other allied forces.

The U.S. Army needed a route surveillance and reconnaissance solution that would improve the situational awareness of vehicle-bound soldiers. In particular, it sought a best-of-breed Terrestrial Intel-ligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (T-ISR) collection system that could be rapidly field-deployed and withstand the harsh conditions of the battlefield.

> S O L U T I O N

360°, full motion video technology from Immersive Media has improved the effective-ness and understanding of the U.S. Army’s operations. With an unimpeded field of view, U.S. Army teams have solidified their tactical superiority in dangerous urban environments while improving the safety of their soldiers.

In addition to aiding real-time missions, the videos also provide an invaluable record of events for post-operation analyses. They allow U.S. Army leaders to study high-risk environments, enemy tactics and allied responses from a multitude of angles and viewpoints. All told, the IVRRS has helped the U.S. Army eliminate blind spots along key transporta-tion and supply routes. It has improved the early detection of security breaches and persons of interest. It has increased the efficiency and expediency of emergency responses. And it has led to better critical decision-making before, during and after operations.

fortified the solution for greater survivability, simplicity and reliability in strenuous tactical environments.

The solution uses an Immersive Media Dodeca® 2360 camera system to capture high-resolution video of key routes and locations from every direction simultane-ously. IVRRS records the action surrounding a vehicle during missions and includes GPS data for spatial orientation and location-specific analyses. U.S. Army personnel have full viewing control of the 360° videos, with the ability to look in any direction at any point in time for comprehensive observation and examination of their surroundings.

LIVE BROADCAST

M uchMusic is a Canadian network dedicated to providing an

entertaining, informative and engaging look at popular music. Its revolutionary approach to broadcasting allows view-ers to get up close and personal with their favorite artists, acts and entertain-ers. This includes innovative web-only content that spurs user interactivity, reaches new audiences and expands sponsorship revenue streams.

> C H A L L E N G E

Increasing viewership and thereby boosting advertising and sponsorship revenues is the goal of any entertainment broadcaster. With heavy competition for viewers’ atten-tion, many have employed new methods for expanding their reach and growing their audience. One example is MuchMusic, Canada’s premier music network.

MuchMusic recently sought to expand its daily Live in the Lot program beyond the studio audience and beyond Canadian televi-sion screens. Part music video hour, part dance party and part talk show with celebrity appearances and audience interaction, the Live in the Lot series is a hit with young viewers.

MuchMusic wanted to provide greater online access to the daily program as well as additional audience interactivity. Doing so would attract new online viewers, improve the program’s “stickiness” and expand sponsorship revenue streams.

Using IM LIVE, Immersive Media’s 360° streaming video solution, MuchMusic is giving online viewers a front row seat for its Live in the Lot program. The only video streaming solution with 360° interactivity,

IM LIVE is not only helping MuchMusic reach new audiences around the world, it is also boosting sponsorship proceeds. By supplementing on-air programming with interactive online segments, MuchMusic can offer additional visibility and consumer involvement to its sponsors.

“Immersive Media has enabled MuchMusic to give our fans exclusive access to our live events and programming that makes them feel like they are actually in our studio,” says Ryan Trotman, director, Much MTV Digital.

“The 360° interactive experience allows fans to take control of their favorite shows like MuchOnDemand and Live in the Lot to give them their own personal experience with their favorite artists and Much VJs. Being at the leading edge of technology is enabling MuchMusic to interact with its audience in powerful, new ways. Technologies like IM LIVE are allowing us to bring in additional viewers to our live show and complement our on-air programming.”

IM LIVE places online users in the middle of a live event and gives them full control of their viewing experience.

While Canadians have always been able to tune in weekdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m. East-ern Standard Time, IM LIVE is bringing the Live in the Lot show to viewers around the world – as if they were a part of the studio audience. With Immersive Media’s Dodeca® 2360 camera system conveniently placed next to the studio audience, online viewers have 360° control and can see beyond the television cameras’ eyes. All studio activities and people are in full view, from the camera operators and live audience to the host and celebrity guests. The streaming video feed remains live for the entire hour, giving a behind-the-scenes experience that television viewers miss during commercials and music videos.

MuchMusic is also taking advantage of IM LIVE’s portability. In addition to the daily studio show, the network is using IM LIVE for exclusive band interviews and performances as part of its MuchOnDemand series. The 360° online experience was launched with a special live concert from Billy Talent. Paramore conducted a private green room interview. And additional live interviews and performances are in the works.

LIVE BROADCAST

By expanding online viewership and audience “stickiness,” IM LIVE enhances brands, products and services while generating new revenue opportunities.
