In 648 B.C. Greeks started a sport called Pankration, (All Powers) which was the first form of fighting with rules. The only rules were no biting and no eye gouging. I consider these very insignificant considering that the matches would sometimes last hours and end with death, although you would knock your opponent out or make them submit . The sport became popular when it was introduced to the Olympic games.

Although Jiu Jitsu started in Japan Brazil martial arts schools quickly created their own version which is now widely popular in the UFC. The idea behind it is that a smaller weaker opponent can still win against a stronger opponent by using grappling and choke hold submissions.
