Message from the ChairAs we all move closer to normal, we can recognize more clearly the importance of art in our lives. The plan for the Muskegon Museum of Art is to insure that Muskegon and West Michigan’s finest fine art museum survives and remains alive, well, and relevant for the next century.

The goal is to expand adding three new galleries and two classrooms, simple but very much needed, enabling the MMA to show far more of its great collection.

Message from the DirectorWe are excited to present a summer of exhibitions featuring women artists at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Beyond the Ceiling: Women of Studio Glass is an appropriate and impressive follow up to last summer’s major glass show along with Women at the Forefront: Stories from the Permanent Collection. We are especially proud to host Rising Voices 2: The Bennett Prize® for Figurative Women Realist Painters alongside a solo show by Aneka Ingold, winner of the inaugural Bennett Prize in 2019. We cannot wait for you to see it!

This is just the start to one of the MMA’s most ambitious seasons. In September, we will open Edward S. Curtis: Unpublished Alaska in partnership with the Curtis Legacy Foundation, featuring photographs of his last journey never before seen by the public. MiniARTure Golf; a fully playable nine-hole art-inspired golf course inside the MMA, opens in December. The fun continues next summer with Dressing the Abbey, featuring the original costumes and props from the hit British television show, Downton Abbey.

As of this writing, our Shaping the Future Capital Campaign for Museum Expansion has reached $8.6M. That is 87% of our goal of $9.9M. We hope you can help us get over the goal line!

Message from the Trustees & CabinetTwo factors are driving the Muskegon Museum of Art expansion initiative:

1. There is not su�cient space to display the permanent collection.

2. Touring exhibitions today require larger venues than the MMA has to o�er.

The plan is to add three new galleries and two new classroom activity areas, along with support space, which will meet these challenges and sustain this cultural treasure for generations to come.

The new galleries will increase permanent collection exhibition space by 222% and temporary exhibition space by 60%, making the Muskegon Museum of Art more of a destination rather than a stop over.

The Trustees are committed to keeping the Museum alive, well, and relevant for the next 100 years.

Beyond the Ceiling: Women of Studio Glass celebrates the contributions of women artists to the international movement of studio glass making. Enhancing the Muskegon Museum of Art’s own permanent collection with loans by contemporary women artists, this exhibition showcases a range of interests and design in glass, revealing the innovations and vision that women have contributed over the decades.

Guests will fi nd glass shaped in a host of techniques, from blowing and heat shaping to casting and slumping, refl ecting generations of experimentation and creative vision. These women, and those that followed, have shared their knowledge and skills around the world, shaping the international glass movement into the force it is today. Featured artists include Shelley Muzylowski Allen, Sonja Blomdahl, Nancy Callan, Deanna Clayton, Amber Cowan, Sabrina Knowles and Jenny Pohlman, Debora Moore, Kait Rhoads, Mary Sha� er, Sylvia Vigiletti, Ann Wol� , Toots Zynsky, and more.

Women at the Forefront: Stories from the Permanent Collection presents artworks by women who were highly influential and successful during their lifetimes, exhibiting, teaching, innovating, advocating, and pioneering. Today, many of their stories are being rediscovered and shared with new audiences. This exhibition highlights the stories of these women through their art and biographies, calling attention to their achievements and celebrating the contributions of women through the decades. Works by Deborah Butterfield, Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Catlett, Judy Dater, Françoise Gilot, and other artists are featured in a variety of media.

In collaboration with Steven Alan Bennett, Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, and The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Muskegon Museum of Art is honored to present the 2021 award and exhibition for The Bennett Prize®. A stipend/grant-in-aid award founded by Steven and Elaine, the $50,000 Bennett Prize® is given biennially to a woman painter whose principal focus is figurative painting, primarily in a realistic style. The Bennett Prize® seeks to encourage the pursuit of figurative realism by women painters and provides support over two years to a select painter whose work demonstrates excellence in the genre. In this second cycle, we are excited to present an outstanding group of new finalists.

The Bennett Prize® is intended to elevate and support women painters who use the figure in a realistic manner. The Prize seeks to alter the status quo by celebrating women painters whose works challenge how the figure is perceived and to aid in the discovery and sharing of previously marginalized or excluded voices. The diversity of style and theme seen in the works of the finalists stands out for its transcendence of traditional tropes and o�ers modern insights into how we view the self and its accompanying issues of cultural, racial, sexual, gender, and political identity.

From the traditional to the experimental, the figure clearly remains a vital source of inspiration for women artists across the United States. Our four jurors, Patrick Moore, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum; prominent figurative painters Alyssa Monks and Katie O’Hagan; and Prize co-founder and art collector Steven Bennett deliberated extensively, seeking those artists whose works stood out amongst a very talented whole. They ultimately selected artists who presented in their paintings an intriguing blend of representation that both drew from and challenged traditional realism and the use of the figure, works whose stories resonated with our ever tumultuous examinations of the self and its complex relationships to others, both past and present. Beautiful, amusing, haunting, mystifying, celebratory, and surprising, these artworks invite closer examination of the artists’ perspectives and o�er the viewer an opportunity to evaluate their own lives, experiences, and perceptions of the world.

Congratulations 2021 Bennett Prize Winner Ayana RossPainter Ayana Ross, of McDonough, Georgia, has won the prestigious 2021 Bennett Prize®. Ross’s work explores identity and cultural awareness in the everyday lives of African Americans in the American South.

Ross will be awarded $50,000, giving her the opportunity to create new work in the figurative realist style for a solo exhibition that ultimately will travel the country. The Bennett Prize is the largest prize o�ered solely to women figurative painters.

“Ross’ paintings create story fragments that invite viewers to insert themselves and see their own experiences in her work,” said Patrick Moore, one of four jurors and director of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. “She highlights racial disparities as well as inter-generational progress in Black lives.”

Her win was announced on May 27 at the virtual opening reception for the Rising Voices 2: The Bennett Prize exhibition.

Aneka Ingold: TransfigurationMichael and Kay Oltho� Gallery

The Muskegon Museum of Art is excited to premiere the first solo exhibition for The Bennett Prize®, featuring the work of 2019 Prize winner Aneka Ingold.

Ingold’s dramatically staged paintings present mysterious allegories informed by the stories and lives of women. Drawn from self-reflection and the shared experiences of peers and women throughout history, her narratives are relayed through symbols and patterns that culminate in a goddess-like figure. Ingold’s powerful characters, rendered in precise layers of colored pencil and paint, earned her the honor of being named the inaugural winner of The Bennett Prize® for Women Figurative Realist Painters in 2019. The paintings in this exhibition are the culmination of her two-year grant period and represent a profoundly transformative time, of life upended and redefined, and a woman transfigured by her journey.

On June 8, 1927, Edward Sherri� Curtis, accompanied by daughter Beth Curtis Magnuson and newly employed Stewart C. Eastwood, set sail on the steamer ship Victoria towards Nome, Alaska. The purpose of their voyage was to complete the photography and research for the final 20th volume of Curtis’s masterwork, The North American Indian. Begun in 1906, The North American Indian was the defining passion of Curtis’s life, an attempt to record, in writing and photography, the lives of the Indigenous Peoples of the Southwestern, Western, and Northwestern United States. This trip, planned for a single season, would be the final voyage to complete his epic quest. Curtis took hundreds of images on his journey, only part of which were ultimately published. The rest sat, unseen, passed down through the family until today.

Edward Curtis: Unpublished Alaska, The Lost Photographs presents, for the first time to the public, images made from the unused original negatives. Over one hundred images will comprise the exhibition, along with excerpts from the personal journals of Curtis and his daughter Beth that describe their often harrowing adventures in the Bering Sea. This exhibition accompanies the 2021 publication of the complete journals by Curtis’s descendants in Edward Curtis: Unpublished Alaska.

92nd Michigan Contemporary Art ExhibitionThe 92nd Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition (September 23 through November 10, 2021) continues our legacy of showcasing the work of Michigan artists, from talented beginners to accomplished professionals. This competitive show presents a look at the issues, themes, and materials inspiring today’s Michigan artists. A visitor favorite, the exhibition engages, challenges, and inspires conversation. Entry is open to Michigan residents ages 18 and over.

Maurice Brazil PrendergastSunday in the ParkMaurice Brazil Prendergast is known for his oil and watercolor paintings of leisure scenes, primarily depicting figures in parks and along various shorelines. This painting is a fine example of his style, with rounded brush marks and a vivid—though in this case somewhat subdued—color scheme. Prendergast was one of the earliest American Post-Impressionist painters, with a style characterized by distinct, swirling brush marks and vivid colors. While he was a member of the Eight, from the famed 1908 show at Macbeth Gallery, his style and subject varied greatly from the urban realism of his peers.

Prendergast was born in Newfoundland, Canada, but moved with his family to Boston in 1868 after the failure of their father’s trading post. He began his artistic career as a commercial art apprentice, painting sign cards for department store windows. Prendergast and his brother Charles, also an artist, were very close, and spent most of their lives together. The pair traveled to England in the 1880s and to Paris in 1891 to study at the Atelier Colorossi and the Académie Julian. In Europe, they were introduced to two leading British avant-garde painters, Walter Richard Sickert and Aubrey Beardsley, and to the Post-Impressionist

paintings of such artists as Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. Prendergast and his brother returned to Boston in 1894, the same year Maurice exhibited at the Boston Arts Club, the first recorded instance of his works appearing in a show. His brother Charles became a highly-popular frame maker, specializing in custom, hand-carved designs. A sponsorship by the noted art collector Sarah Choate Sears took Maurice Prendergast to Italy from 1898-1899. The watercolors he produced during this trip appeared in a 1900 exhibition at Macbeth Gallery and at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In 1904, Prendergast exhibited at the National Arts Club, meeting William Glackens, Robert Henri, and John French Sloan. He joined this new circle of friends and additional artists George Luks, Everett Shinn, and Arthur B. Davies in the 1908 Macbeth Gallery Exhibition of The Eight. Continuing with The Eight, Prendergast was part of the selection committee for the 1913 Armory Show and exhibited seven of his paintings in the exhibition. He and his brother Charles moved to New York City in 1914, where he stayed until his death in 1924.
