Mindset -Motivation - Technology
With Graymalkin
-Teaching is difficult
-The pay is not good
-Teachers are under
attack from parents
and legislatures
But don’t forget this :
When you walk into your classroom on Monday
Teaching is fun.
If your
not
having
fun you
aren’t
doing it
right.

Why Not Let High Ability Students Start
School in January? NRC G/T Study
Approximately 40-50% of traditional classroom
material could be eliminated for targeted students
Presentation Philosophy
A mental attitude that determines
how you will interpret and
respond to situations
Yesterday's Theory
We Are Born with a fixed Intelligence
This fixed intelligence that can be measured using an IQ test
No matter how much you learn or how hard you work your intelligence stays the
same . We call this a
Fixed Mindset
Current Research
Growth Mindset
The brain is malleable. It is like a muscle that gets stronger and works
better the more it is exercised.
Since talent and ability are
fixed….
why bother with effort? It won’t
change anything. In fact, having
to work hard casts doubt on your
ability.
Talent and Effort
Talent and Effort
Learning should come naturally. “When I have to
work really hard in a subject, I don’t feel smart."
Even the ‘genius’ has to work and work hard for their achievements.
Talent and Effort
Talent and Effort
Putting a lot of effort into learning and working hard is
key.
“The harder I have to work at something,
the more effort I put into something,
the better I’ll be at it”
Whoever does the work gets smarter.
School is supposed to be hard?
Risk
The idea of trying and failing is terrifying. Student avoids challenges, gets defensive
and gives up easily.
Do you ever find this in student writing? Is it a fear of improper grammar or poor ideas. When we write we dedicate a certain
amount of time for writing about “bad ideas”
Risk
Stretch themselves to take risks and learn. Bring on challenges.
Motivation • Wooden photo
How are we going to motivate these guys
Extrinsic reward: Reward and punishment delivered by the
environment for behaving in certain ways
• Motivation 2.0
Problems with Motivation 2.0 (Carrots and Sticks)
They crush creativity
They can encourage cheating and shortcuts
They can extinguish intrinsic motivation.
By offering a reward, a principal signals to the agent that the task is
undesirable.
Once the reward disappears why continue learning?
When Carrots and Sticks are Useful
Tasks that are inherently unpleasant (e.g.,
cleaning out latrines).Tasks that only require
mechanical skills
“Offer a rationale for why the task is necessary.”“Acknowledge that the task
is boring.”
What's the answer?
Motivation 3.0
Intrinsic Rewards
The joy/satisfaction of completing a task motivates
its completion
What are the Three Basic Human Drives?
Autonomy-Mastery-Purpose
Giving students a certain level of
autonomy
desire to direct our own lives
mastery
The urge to make progress and get better at something that matters
Mastery
It demands effort, grit,
and deliberate practice.
Mastery is a pain
“the yearning to
do what we do
in the service of
something
larger than
ourselves.”
Purpose
How to Develop a Growth Mindset?
Embrace Confusion
Resourceful
Clever in dealing with
problems
The ability to do what you
should do,
When you should do it,
Whether you feel like it or not.
Self Discipline
Admit teachers errors
Explain how many of my good ideas blow up in my face
How some ideas are half baked and need to go back in the oven
Good thing we’re not doctors
I walk them through my
thoughts and
feelings.
Metacognition of a
failure.
Fatigue makes cowards of us all
This is how we get high test scores
Teachers job: find the best technology.
Provide background instruction.
Create and provide log-ins
Beware of just “assigning” and not
teaching
Great way to incorporate Cornell notes
My favorite method for using “depth complexity”
You need a bunch of cameras
or smart phones.
Khan 1 and Khan 2 Groups
Must always take notes on video lesson
Copy and Paste and Print your quizzes
It’s the most realistic and rigorous
We are trying to foster curiosity
They have awesome support activities
Use very few words but many slides
How do these images reflect the novel’s
theme?
If you find something better or easier, let me know.
“Learning for learning sake”
“Learning for learning sake”
Where is that in the TEKS?
“Simply living in a dumpster”
It’s where I post all my new half
baked ideas for students
