Rockland World Radio the [local Internet broadcast leader] is gearing up for its 10th season. No small task, considering the hold traditional media has had in convincing the public they’re the only game in town. The Internet will no longer be looked upon as a passing phase - digital is here to stay. Worldwide, the broadcasting industry is being turned on its head by the Internet. It’s no different locally, where technological advances — online and otherwise — are taking place at an unprecedented pace and leaving a wave of uncertainty in their wake. But it’s all about opportunity, not catastrophe.

“For advertisers there’s the ability to better target audiences online where they are better defined. Financial people have a better idea of how their budgets are being used. For consumers there’s the ability to watch or listen to programming whenever and wherever they want — they decide, guided in some form by broadcasters.

Nothing illustrates this more effectively than the rise of YouTube, now owned by Google. Take the stats: YouTube receives approximately 2 billion views a day — more than double the prime-time audience of the three major American TV networks combined. Last year more than 13 million hours of video were uploaded to the site, and 35 hours of video are uploaded every minute. Put another way, more video is uploaded to YouTube in 60 days than the three major American networks have created in 60 years.

Well, the warmer days of summer are making way for the cooler days and nights of autumn. Peo-ple are busy raking leaves, cutting back perennials, planting bulbs, mulching, cleaning and putting away your tools. But the birds have been busy since July (as soon as the chicks have fledged) preparing for their migration.

Though some birds are year round residents, many birds migrate to warmer climates. They are off looking for their winter feeding territories, and some have a very long trip! It’s vital for us to help them on their journey, with so much urban sprawl that their normal feeding grounds have all but disappeared. How can you help? Here are some tips on what you can do to help the birds during this time of year (August – October):

Put t ing Your Garden To Bed(and how i t can help wi ld l i fe)

Keep your feeders filled with food. The year round residents will start coming to your feeders now that some of their food (insects, plant seeds) are dwindling. You will also get flocks of birds that are on their way south to their winter habitat.Some flying hundreds, if not thousands, of miles! They need to store up fat in their bodies so they can make this trip. They are not flying non-stop, but making stops along the way to rest and refuel. The most dangerous trips are the ones over long distances of water, where they cannot land.

Have clean water sources for them to drink and to bath. They need to stay hy-drated and to keep their feathers pristine in order to fly.

Plant native trees/shrubs. Many trees and shrubs have berries this time of year that are higher in fat and digest more slowly for hungry birds: chokeberry, late

season blueberry, spicebush, Callery pear, sumacs are some examples. Some supply insects, nesting sites and cover as benefits, such as: sugar maples, redbuds, Douglas firs and white pine to name a few.

Plant native flowers. Many flowers offer seeds to hungry migrants, such as:goldenrod, echinacea (not the cultivars), tickseed sunflower, native aster, coreopsis, black-eyed Susan, Mexican hat and lu-pines. Even some of the annual flowers we plant in the northeast are favored, such as: zinnias, sunflowers cosmos and marigolds.

Leave some of the weeds: if you can man-age, leave some of the weeds for thebirds. They have seeds too: foxtail grass, crabgrass, mustards, purslane, ragweed,thistles. One of the most beautiful to me is the magenta stems and deep purpleberries of the pokeweed plant. Birds love those berries, but they are toxic to ushumans.

Have different types of feeders available: tubular, tray, cage and nectar. Some birds like to perch on the tube feeders, some like the open tray feeders. The cage feeders are usually for the suet, while the nectar feeders are usually for the hummingbirds.

Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy the show! Between all the birds at your feedersand the trees changing colors, autumn in the Northeast is a feast for the eyes! I hopethat everyone finds this to be a truly bountiful season.

P.S. don’t forget about leaving some mor-sels of seed around for those cute littlechipmunks that will be going into a state of torpor for winter! They need the foodthey store to survive!

Have lots of cover in your yard for the fall migrants. Small song birds are not theonly migrants on the move this time of year. Hawks will go after small birds if they have the open space to do so.

Don’t forget the hummingbirds! Those tiny winged wonders burn so much fat asthey flit around. They need lots of fuel on their long journey! Keep those feedersof nectar going into October for these mi-grants. Some examples of late bloominghummingbird favorites are: cardinal flower, salvias, standing cypress and lobelia.

Give them an extra treat and put out some mealworms in a bowl for them.

Put up nesting boxes for them to keep warm at night.

Leave some of that leaf litter around. Lots of insects and worms will find it “home” and the birds will find it a nice “dining out” place in your yard.

Don’t forget to put up some suet feeders. This high caloric treat will help thesebirds to “fatten up” for their long journey.

And what a summer it has been, Media Mash-ers. From the first 90 degree day to the threat of hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. And not to men-tion the unlawfully gross gaffes uttered by the inopportune presidential candidates. I mean, soon I’ll have to call my show presidential candidate mashup, because they’re so similar. Amirite?

On to movies: The new shoot-em-up thriller Expendables 2 hit the theaters (thankfully not ours), to awe-struck patrons. All of us here at RWR/NVT/MMZ hope you saved your $30 and didn’t see it. What garbage.

Instead, Bruce Willis tore poop up and laid the smack down on the box office in the movie, Moonrise Kingdom. And not just in the overt sense of the terms. The new Wes Anderson flick moves cerebrally, and builds slowly to a crescendo, fortissimo, and includes Hank Wil-liams’ songs placed inconspicuously, adding to the period piece that is this movie.

On the music front, Nikki Minaj continues her affrontery toward what used to be music. She looks great though, better than Carly Rae Jep-sen. Some of us here at the Modern Metro Zine do appreciate the hot summer track, “Call Me Somebody that I used to Know,” or was it, “Call Me Single Ladies,” anyway. And although our opinions are varied, they are each respected.

New paragraph. I, being the best radio host/pop-culture critic in Rockland County get to interview the coolest people. I interviewed my sister, Councilwoman Stephanie Hausner about the Democratic National Convention, while she was there! How cool is that!? VERY! I also had on Rockland’s own, Tommy Stella who is an aspiring musician. He talked about his upcoming, as-yet untitled album and played us a tune to be featured.

Media Mashup had an awesome co-host by the name of Kate Yeager for a few weeks! She had the voice of both Jesus and Fergie combined! COMBINED! Crazy stuff here at the Daily Planet of Shenanigans. Media Mashup, before you know it, will have millions and millions of viewers, no joke. We are all ready at 1000! 1000 viewers! Crazy right? Right! Why, if we stay on the air for 300 more years, we’ll have a total cumulative listenership of over eleventy-seven billion!

Alright well I got to run, the mayor of Nyack is calling me to fight off some dinosaurs and aliens with my gorgeous radio voice. He thinks I am the next James Earl Jones and honestly, I think so too. The Borders Books and Music Store in Ramsey, N.J., was just one of the

stores affected by the company’s liquidation sale in 2011. This new release from Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of how employees

dealt with the loss of their jobs and their courage in finding inspiration to

try new things.

Author Rebecca Van Der Jagt, who began work-ing at Borders in June 2011, is pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology and Education at Columbia Teachers College. She hopes to become both a

writer and an educator.



Pastimes with Jesse

What a long, strange trip it’s been, returning to Nyack. As I followed Hurricane Isaac from New Orleans, I found the answers, my friends.

People continue livin’ how they used to and nobody can catch up to New York City, and they’re not even tryin’

It took three days, even though I went lickety-splitly, and had gone 500 miles when the first day was done. The motel in Ooltewah was just what I wanted; right on the highway but in an actual town. Then came the ‘villes, Ashe and Charlotte’s. Spotless.

If I’m makin’ a long story short, I’ll let you know that we’re here at the Nyack Village Theatre, fixin’ to give a shack-shakin’ set as the featured performer of the October 12th edition of the All We Got! Records Open Mic.

And catch this season of Jesse’s Pastimes, live or in the archives. I tell ya, the archives are so rich with fun, enlightening, local and universal programming, I’m expecting a call from the Smithsonian!

of family and friends newly learned skills in character development, vocal strength, stage presence adn on-the-spot improvi-sational acting. There was even a staged reading of a scene written by two of the students. The students performed with confidence and focus. They looked like young actors working their craft in front of an audience. They took ownership of their final product. As their director, I was pleased and proud that they “got it”. And by that, I mean, they used their skills, their humor, their intelligence (sans costumes, props and sets) to entertain their audi-ence.

I am always interested in encouraging young people with talent but I never imagined I would find someone as young as the young man I am interviewing here. Sam Hurwitz is a nine year old singer/songwriter who has been formally writing songs for three years now. I met him and his family at a recent Open Mic at the Nyack Village Theatre and was so impressed speaking with him. I knew I had to interview him for MMZ. He plays guitar in a band called Amplifier on Fire with his 11 year old brother Harrison, who plays drums.

He was very poised and spoke so well, the evening we met. He told me right away he is into alternative rock music. He mentioned how his friends like pop music and how he stands

up to them, defending his taste in music. He mentioned his favorite band is Wilco, therefore, I wasn’t too surprised by some of his answers when I interviewed him. I found him quite amazing, I think you will too.

MMZ: Who has influenced you the most in your songwriting

Sam: I’m not really sure. The songs just come to me as I’m playing. But, my favorite band is Wilco - I’ve been listening to them since I was 2. I also love the Avett Brothers and I just started listening to Mumford and Sons.

MMZ: Did you start playing guitar first or writing songs first?

Sam: I have always done both at the same time. When I was 2 I started strumming a toy guitar and making up songs as I played. When I was 6 I started taking guitar lessons and kept writing songs as I played the guitar.

MMZ: What was the first song you wrote and when did you write it?

Sam: Not counting the songs I wrote before I actually learned to play the guitar, the first REAL song was “We’re Gonna get Wet”. I wrote that when I was 6.

MMZ: What other interests do you have?

Sam: I like to direct and act in movies I make with my friends and brother. I like to write (I wrote a screenplay and I’m writing a book) and I like to build with legos and to cook.

MMZ: Do you have a music class in your school?

Sam: Yes I have music and chorus.

MMZ: Do you think you will pursue singing/songwriting as a career and if so, do you plan on looking into music schools/high schools/col-leges?

Sam: I’m not sure.

MMZ: If you could open a show for anyone, who would it be?

Sam: Wilco

MMZ: If you could choose anyone to open a show for you, who would it be?

Sam: Wilco

MMZ: Will you be coming back to Nyack Vil-lage Theatre open mics, or are you perform-ing some other place, so we can let your fans know?

Sam: I had a great time at the Nyack Village Theatre open mic. I’m sure I’ll come back soon! My next performance is at the Supertonic Songwriters’ Circle hosted by my guitar teacher Cliff Mays on September 21st at the Black Cat Cafe in Irvington.

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door-

Only this, and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Eagerly I wished the morrow;- vainly I had sought to borrow

From my books surcease of sorrow- sor-row for the lost Lenore-

For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore-

Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain

Thrilled me- filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;

So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,

But the Raven still beguiling all my fancy into smiling,

Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust and door;

What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt and ominous bird of yore

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing

To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core;

This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining

On the cushion’s velvet lining that the lamplight gloated o’er,

She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then methought the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer

Swung by Seraphim whose footfalls tinkled on the tufted floor.

“Wretch,” I cried, “thy God hath lent thee- by these angels he hath sent thee

Respite- respite and nepenthe, from thy memories of Lenore!

Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!”

Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,

By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore.

“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,

Ghastly grim and ancient raven wander-ing from the Nightly shore-

Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”


Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,

Though its answer little meaning- little relevancy bore;

For we cannot help agreeing that no liv-ing human being

Ever yet was blest with seeing bird above his chamber door-

Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door,

With such name as “Nevermore.”

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only

That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.

Nothing further then he uttered- not a feather then he fluttered-

Till I scarcely more than muttered, “other friends have flownbefore-

On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.”

Then the bird said, “Nevermore.”


“Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!- prophet still, if bird ordevil!-

Whether Tempter sent, or whether tem-pest tossed thee here ashore,

Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted-

On this home by horror haunted- tell me truly, I implore- Is there-

is there balm in Gilead?- tell me- tell me, I implore!”

Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!”Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sit-ting, still is sitting

On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;

And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,

And the lamplight o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted- nevermore!
