Moab University Overview Moab University is a private post-secondary, career focused university that is located in

Moab, Utah. Moab is a beautiful city that is tucked in a valley with gorgeous red rock

formations and desert landscape all around. The city of Moab is also located between two of

Americas most famous National Parks, Arches National Park and Canyonlands. Both of these

beautiful National Parks are ranked in Trip Advisors “Top 10 National Parks in America”.

Throughout the surrounding area of Moab are dozens of outdoor adventures and vacation hot

spots that include hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, countless ATV/Dirt Bike trails and

even white water rafting on the mighty Colorado River! The town of Moab is a perfect place for

students of MU to get in-touch with the outdoors and retreat into nature’s breath-taking views

after a long day of classes and studying. On top of all of the adventures that can be taken in

Moab, something as simple as a sunset in Moab over the red cliffs is perhaps one of the most

beautiful and serene sights that one can ever hope to witness .

The breathtaking campus of Moab University is located right in the center of Moab with

the Colorado River cutting right through campus creating the perfect border separating the

Athletic and Housing side of campus from the Academic side of campus. The view from the

bridges crossing the river connecting the two sides of campus can be described simply as

refreshing and energizing.

Moab University was founded in 2015 and offers both undergraduate and graduate

degrees in multiple programs including but not limited to business, exercise science, arts and

sciences, sport management, and even leadership. MU offers many other programs on top of

these booming degree programs in fields such as accounting, criminal justice, agriculture and

supply chain management. MU currently has over 5,400 on campus students, full-time students

and is continuing to grow. The mission of MU is “To provide students with a world class

education as well as allowing students to further their athletic careers in collegiate athletics.”

This is done through providing students with state-of-the-art facilities that support performance

both on the field and in the class room.

Moab University strives to stimulate intellectual growth and enrichment as well as

develop professionalism through hands on activities inside the class room. It is a firm belief at

MU that most real world knowledge comes from actual hands on experiences, rather than solely

from text books. That is why at MU all teaching staff were previously either in a management

position or a high up position in a company that participated in a field that they are looking to

teach. For example, all of the professors in the Smith School of Business at MU were either

executives or top level managers in firms all around the country before they became professors at

MU. Because of their real world experience, they are much more qualified to enlighten a student

as to how concepts learned inside the class room relate to actual business practices and

expenditures in the working world. Having this knowledge base puts MU’s students ahead of the

rest and puts them in the best possible position for success after college.

MU also has a high end athletic facility that is used for both varsity athletics as well as

recreational activities. This facility is one of a kind as is complete with an indoor 80 yard turf

field, multiple basketball courts, a state-of-the-art weight room, indoor elevated 200 meter track

Page 6: Moab University

Smith 5

and even our infamous “shake shack” store where students can use their flex dollars to purchase

any shake from a wide variety of flavors functions. Any student at MU is free to use any of the

facilities inside this recreational center at any time they wish, day or night.

Another facility that MU has that sets them apart is a full indoor ice arena. The ice arena

is the setting for both women’s and men’s home hockey games. This facility when not in use by

the men’s and women’s hockey team is open during the afternoon and evening to students for

open ice skating. This indoor ice rink is something that no other Division III school in the region

has. The arena seating can seat anywhere up to 3,000 people.

Moab University is a NCAA Division III school, and offers 22 varsity sports across

men’s and women’s athletics. Athletics is a huge part of what MU is about. MU has a very

large fan base and boasts averages of over 9,000 fans at home football games and 3-4,000 at

home men’s basketball games. Because MU is such a huge part of the Moab community, the

city of Moab really supports all of MU’s athletic programs, and tend to a have great presence at

all home events. Students always come out and support their school at home games creating one

of the most fun and exciting student sections in Division III athletics. MU’s football stadium

was also ranked as one of the top 5 toughest stadiums for opponents to play in according to an

article written in ESPN Magazine. Below is a last of all 22 NCAA Division III recognized

varsity athletic programs offer at Moab University.

Organizational Structure

Page 8: Moab University

Smith 7

An organizational structure for any firm refers to how a certain firm’s chain of command

works. For instance, the organizational structure in a sport oriented organization refers to the

manner in which the tasks and duties are broken down and allocated to employees throughout

the organization. The organizational structure also outlines the reporting relationships

between employees and employers. In any organizational structure, every position in the

structure has a designated person/position one level above them to whom which they directly

report to. All management and supervisory positions in an organizational structure have clear

outline of who they are responsible for in the level beneath them and who they too as well

report to, one level above them.

In order for an organization to operate correctly, it is imperative that all lines of

communication be open and transparent throughout the entire organizational structure. The

best way to accomplish this is to have a clear transparent business model that allows

information to flow freely from top to bottom and for feedback to travel from the bottom to

the top. It is also very important for the proper information to travel through the proper lines

of communication. The line of communication between departments at all levels must be

very clear in order to avoid the communication lines getting mixed up and having

information go to the wrong departments.

It is also important for the organizational structure to be flexible and able to change or

adapt with an ever-changing work environment or culture. If the culture or environment of

the origination itself changes, the structure of the organization itself as well as the lines of

communication must be able to have the ability to adapt and change along with the

organization. This must be kept in mind when designing the structure of the organization to

allow for any unforeseen changes that may occur in the organization down the road.

Page 9: Moab University

Smith 8

Moab University’s Athletic Department is dedicated to the value of openness and the

flow of communication and feedback between staff and administration throughout all levels

of the department. This allows for change and innovation as well as providing opportunities

for professional development as well as staff training.

Atop Moab University’s is the President of Moab University. The President is

responsible for communicating the demands of the Board of Directors to the rest of the

University’s staff and administration through a trickle-down effect. This means that things

such as direction, goals and objectives are matriculated down the lines all line of

communication of communication to ensure that every position in the organization receives

the same information and are all moving in the same direction. This puts all the staff and

administration at Moab University on the same foundation which in turn puts the University

itself in the best possible position for success.

The success of a department such as the Athletic department relies heavily on the ease

and clarity of the flow of information between the President of the University and the

Athletic Director. Examples of things that are a necessity to be clearly communicated

includes things such as decisions and delegations that will be relayed down throughout the

rest of the Athletic Department to the coaches, assistants and all other staff.

Below is the organization chart for Moab University. This organizational chart illustrates

the flow of information and chain of command throughout the entire Athletic Department by

showing who reports to whom on a typical day. By looking at the organization chart below,

the lines of communication from the top down and form the bottom up should be clear.

Interview Questionnaire The following interview questions (located below) have been designed to reveal a

candidates personality while staying relevant to all sports rather than being specific to just one.

The questions are designed to be relevant to all sports so that all athletic coaches hired at MU

will be of somewhat similar personality and character. The point of these questions is to make

the candidate have to think deeply about his/her response, which in turn will provide the

interviewer with a better understanding of who the candidate really is.

Page 21: Moab University

Smith 20

For any coaching position at MU, MU seeks out only the most passionate candidates with

a great depth of knowledge and understanding in their particular sport. MU also looks for

candidates that can lead a program to success not only right away, but over a long period of time

as well. It is also very important that a candidate fits MU’s organizational culture, and has a very

similar set or morals as MU.

As a new institution, Moab University’s main athletic goal is to build a tradition of

success thorough all sports. To accomplish this, the interviewing and hiring of coaches with the

same mentality and philosophy is key to MU’s success. The following are some possible

questions that could be asked to a candidate during the interviewing process to give the

interviewer a better idea of who the candidate is and what they are about.

What do you feel that you would bring to the table if you were to become a part of our

organization?

What is something you possess (skill set, mentality, etc) that sets you apart from anyone

else?

What is your philosophy when there is a conflict between academics and athletics?

What are some things that you learned at your previous coaching job or experience?

What is your policy when it comes to hazing?

How would you describe yourself as a motivator?

What do you believe to be the most important quality of a head coach?

What is your policy when it comes to multisport athletes?

What do you look for when you bring in assistant coaches? What qualities and/or skills

do they need to possess?

Page 22: Moab University

Smith 21

Give me an example when you as a coach had to overcome adversity in a game and rally

your team. Explain what and how you did it.

When recruiting athletes, what other than athletic ability do you look for?

What is a motto that you have, or try to live your life by?

Why do you want to be or what made you want to be a head coach?

Employment Evaluation FormMoab University looks at and evaluates the performance of all coaches on an annual basis on the

conclusion of the spring semester. This is done in order to maintain a winning culture as well as

encourage the constant improvement of performance of all coaches. These performance

evaluations are done via two evaluation forms. These two evaluation forms include and self-

evaluation form and a student athlete evaluation form completed by the student athletes on that

particular coaches team. The self-evaluation form that is filled out by the coach is designed to

show in writing what the coach is looking to accomplish or improve upon over the course of the

next season. The student athlete evaluation is designed to show how the student athletes on the

team feel the coach is preforming as a team. Combining these two evaluation forms helps

provide the Athletic Director a clear picture from both the coach’s perspective as well as the

player’s perspective of how that coach is preforming. All of these evaluation checks are kept

confidential and are only seen by the person filling out the form and the person administering the

evaluations.

Only the self-evaluation form, the coach will list 5 goals, and or objectives he/she plans

to achieve over the course of the upcoming season. These goals are then filed in the Athletic

Directors office and are kept on file to be reviewed at the conclusion of the season. If the coach

Page 23: Moab University

Smith 22

wishes and/or requests, these goals may be shared with that particular coaches team. At the

conclusion of the season, the coach will be asked to evaluate his/her own performance and

determine whether or not these goals were achieved and establish new goals for the next

upcoming season. If any goals were not achieved, the coach will provide possible reasons why

the goal was not achieved, and what can be changed or done to accomplish that goal.

The player evaluation of the coach will be distributed to every player at their exit

meetings upon the completion of each season. The players will then fill out the form and turn it

in to the Athletic Director. These are turned into the Athletic Director in order to keep the

players comments and answerers confidential to ensure the most honesty amongst players. The

coach will not be allowed to see any one individual player’s review of him, but issues that are

consistent through every player evaluation will be brought up with the coach by the Athletic

Director. The same goes for any positive thing that is consistent throughout. These things will

be discussed individually between the Athletic Director and the coach in a pre-arranged meeting.

Both types of evaluation form’s results will be taken into consideration when decisions on

contract renewal and termination are being made. At the end of both evaluation form will be a

space for any additional comments that a player or coach may have.

Creative Athletic AspectsMoab University’s mascot is the Warhawk. The Warhawk was chosen to be the mascot

because of the rich cultural history of the surrounding area of MU. In the 1600’s and 1700’s,

many Native American tribes called this land home. Even though they were all different tribes,

they all shared one common belief, and that was belief in the Warhawk as the spirit animal of the

west. The Warhawk was known for its strength, cunning, speed, agility, deadly accuracy,

intelligence and its majestic beauty. The Warhawk is also seen as an ever triumphant leader in

Page 27: Moab University

Smith 26

battle. In Native American times, the leaders of the tribes in the area would wear the headdress

of the Warhawk when they lead their men into battle.

Moab University chose the Warhawk to represent the University in athletic contests

because it is the embodiment of all of the key skills our athletes and teams exhibit each and every

game. Our athletes as well as our students all show strength, great leadership, intelligence,

patience and cunning in their everyday lives just as the majestic Warhawk does. Below is

Budget To break down Moab University’s athletic budget, we will look at the fiscal plan for the

University’s football team. We will be looking at the football team because the football team

brings in the largest amount of revenue out of all the athletic programs. Major revenue streams

for the football program include: team fundraisers, private donations, ticket sales, concessions,

merchandise, apparel, program guide sales and sponsorships. However, along with revenues

come expenses. Major expenses for the Warhawk football program include recruiting, official’s

payment, uniforms, equipment purchasing and replacement, reconditioning of equipment,

uniforms, recruiting, travel and hosting of prospect camps and seminars. To account for all of

this, a budget is established. The budget is used to serve as a financial forecast that allocates

appropriate funds to pay for future expenses, based on the financial needs of similar football

programs previous seasons since there is no historical financial data from MU football to go off

of. The goal of the football program is to get as close to spending the entire budget as possible

without going over budget, and provide as little variance as possible. It is important for the

football program to remain fiscally responsible while attempting to further the program by using

as much of the allocated funds as necessary without going over budget. Below is a breakdown of

the MU football budget. This is to give a visual representation of the revenues and expenditures

associated with the MU football program over the course of one year.
