The world of the traditional office isundergoing major changes. The workingenvironment has changed dramatically, thanks to the use of new means ofcommunication and new technologies.Working in flexible organisationalstructures nowadays requires themobility of employees and of officefurniture and equipment.
We are who we are. In keeping withmodern trends, we see the office notonly as a task-orientated workingspace but also as part of our personalliving environment. The desire for apleasant, motivating working area hastherefore clearly become a centraltopic. The task of furnishing a work-place individually and according topersonal needs must be accomplished.

Nothing is as it used to be, nor as itappears to be. New forms of workdemand flexible schemes in the designand use of the working environment. This is true for the workplace at home, for the satellite office and the main HQ;for normal desk work, VDT tasks anddesk sharing. Modern workplacesdemand flexibility to its fullest extent.

Free-standing uplights, task lights and wall lights
Change is one of the characteristicfeatures of the present age. Roomsand technology must be capable ofadapting to constant change – in otherwords, they must be organised flexibly. The same applies to lighting.Teamwork, concentrated individualwork, meetings, and also, of course,
social gatherings must all take place inthe correct lighting atmosphere, whichoften has to be provided in the sameroom. This task obviously requires multi-functional, highly versatile systems ofuplights, task lights and wall lights, such as the ID-S.
Through flexible arrangements andvarying photometric characteristics, this combination of up, down and tasklighting offers the ideal response tothe tough requirements of a dynamicoffice world.

Light and visual display terminals
In our communication and informtion-based society, screens have become apermanent feature of the office land-scape. In Europe, the European Unionhas issued directives to protect thehealth and safety of employees.
The most crucial design featuresThe following requirements applywhen carrying out design work forvisual display terminals:• Ensure satisfactory lighting conditi-
ons• Make sure there is sufficient
contrast between the screen and itsenvironment
• Prevent annoying glare or reflec-tions on the screen
• Fit windows with adjustable shiel-ding to protect against unwantedlight
Employers have a duty to look afterthe health and safety of employees.According to EU directives, proof ofthis must be submitted by means of aworkplace survey.
Are luminaires for visual displayterminals available?Beware of assuming that so-called»VDT« or »Category rated« luminaireswill solve the problem. No country haspublished a standard that definesluminaires for visual display terminalsin concrete terms. There are only stipulations which describe »lighting inrooms with visual display terminals«.Given the complexity of this subject, the most important design factors arethose stated in the following notes:
Viewing direction parallel towindowsWhere it is stipulated that the direc-tion in which the screen is viewedmust be parallel to the windows, it ispossible to select a standard layoutfor louvre luminaires positioned laterally to the left and right of theworkstations.
Sectionalised workstation withalternative viewing directionsSectionalised workstations are oftenencountered in modern offices with
visual display terminals. Typically, thescreen is positioned so that it slantsrelative to the main viewing directionat an angle of 30° to 45°.Indirect/direct luminaires are useful inthis case.
Sectionalised workstation withunspecified viewing directionIf the layouts of desks and screensand the position of luminaires and themain viewing direction are not stipula-ted relative to each other, lightingmust be flexibly designed to cope withany situation.
There are two recommendations inthis case:1. Indirect/direct schemes which utilise
moveable free-standing and/or wall-mounted uplights, together with suitable direct component, or tasklights as needed.
2.»MELLOW LIGHT« concept withreduced luminances at any angle. This makes it possible to minimisephenomena that have an adverseeffect when working with a keyboard or screen.
Lighting management and visualdisplay terminalsLight can also be perfectly matched tosuit a particular activity by usinglighting management. Screen-basedwork, ordinary office work and confe-rences are inherently different in termsof the requirements they impose onlighting. It is important that incomingdaylight does not cause annoyance ofany kind due to glare or reflections.Control of sunlight and glare pro-tection are therefore an integral partof any good lighting solution.Light can be modified to meet a parti-cular requirement straightforwardlyand reliably by means of a modernlight control system such as LUXMATE.
Windows as a source of glare andnuisanceWindows create the greatest risk ofannoyance due to glare at visual display terminals. Outdoor luminancelevels up to 50,000 cd/m2 are common on bright summer days. The1,000 cd/m2 output of a luminaire isvery small in comparison. A lightingmanagement system can incorporatedaylight and include controlled protection against daylight glare andsunlight.

Lighting concepts
Indirect illuminationThe luminaires radiate light onto theceiling from where it is reflected intothe room. Ideally, the ceiling shouldhave a reflection factor of at least 70 %. The ceiling is brightened byusing the widest possible light distribution. This simulates theimpression of natural light on an overcast day. Surfaces such as wallsetc. are well lit.The room must be high (>2.8 m) inorder to make sure that the ceiling isbrightened as much as possible, with-out creating hot spots. Shades of
white or light pastel colours whichcreate a pleasant room ambience aresuitable colours for the ceiling.Where indirect free-standingluminaires with a symmetrical lightdistribution are used, care must betaken to ensure that they are evenlyplaced throughout the room. With anasymmetrical light distribution, a free-standing luminaire should be placedbeside the workstation or windowfrontage so that the lights emanatesinto the centre of the room.
Indirect/direct (ID) illumination Indirect/direct (ID) illumination combines the advantages of bothpurely direct and purely indirectlighting. Balanced direct and indirectcomponents create a pleasant roomambience by providing sufficient vertical illuminances and good shadowing.
Benefits for the individual• Offers good ceiling brightness and
efficient illumination of work surface• Good shadowing and bright room
surfaces lend the space an invitingfeel.
Benefits for office premises• Prestigious appearance of
executives’ offices, secretarial andlobby areas
• Architecturally interesting thanks togrouping of luminaires
• Elaborate or interesting ceilings canbe highlighted
• Electrical and other supplies throughunder-floor ducting
• Bright peripheral surfaces andextremely economical where reflec-tion factor of ceiling exceeds 70 %.
Workstation considerations• Individual, flexible workstation layout• Use of task lights combined with
indirect free-standing or wall-moun-ted luminaires.
• Task lights offer the possibility ofswitching lighting on and off in theworking area depending on the taskin hand
Benefits for the individual• Pleasant perception of space• Glossy documents are easier to read
due to absence of reflections• Good contrast rendition for working
on documents
Benefits for office premises• Prestigious appearance of
executives’ offices, secretarial andlobby areas
• Good light distribution due to regu-lar arrangement of luminaires
• Architecturally interesting thanks togrouping of luminaires

FLEXOS free-standing uplight and wall light
Da Costa & WolfDesigners of Flexos
Flexibility in the world of workdemands flexibility of lighting. What istherefore more natural than a free-standing uplight – and precisely afree-standing uplight which is fully
variable and can be built up in modu-les. This was the approach of the desi-gners Da Costa & Wolf. The result is afamily of free-standing uplights whichcan be used in all variations both for
single and multi-place workstations. But FLEXOS is not just for lightingworkplaces, it is also designed to meet demanding ambient lightingrequirements.
»The FLEXOS free-standing uplight, designed by

Lighting cannot be more flexible. TheFLEXOS free-standing uplight is avail-able with one, two, three or four heads. Each one can be pivoted separatelyand switched individually. For purposesof design, the free-standing uplightcan be placed anywhere in the room, next to a table or between severaltables. An indirect component of 60 %combined with a direct component of40% provides good contrast renditionand lighting which causes neitherglare nor unwanted reflections. Onlyenergy-saving light sources (TC-L) andelectronic ballasts are used in FLEXOS.
FLEXOSThe range of free-standing uplights iscomplemented by the FLEXOS walllight. It is made in a very slim, moderndesign which nevertheless includes allthe technical lighting features of theFLEXOS range.

Design hints for estimating thenumber of luminaires requiredThe following design parameters areassumed: depending on the lamps fit-ted, room height 3 or 4 m; rectangularroom with approx. 20 m2, 50 m2, or200 m2 with a length-to-width ratio ofabout 1.6:1. Reflection factors: ceiling70%, walls 50%, floor 20%. The roomsize (small, medium, large) determinesthe bar to use for the relevant cat. no.of luminaire. Depending on the inten-sity of illumination required in theroom (300 lx to 500 lx) the appro-priate number of luminaires per 10 m2
can be read off the vertical axis. Adesign factor of 1.25 has already beenincorporated.

Sottsass Associatidesigners of the ID-S free-standing uplightand the ID-SW wall light
In 1987, commissioned by ZumtobelStaff, the renowned design studio ofSottass Associati developed a lumi-naire - ID-S, ID-SW - which created asensation, because of both its designand its technical lighting features.
The clear, simple lines and the out-standing shape of the luminaire headhave made this free-standing uplightand wall light a classic in mobile roomlighting.

OC-S 3/55WDesign hints for estimating thenumber of luminaires requiredThe following design parameters areassumed: depending on the lamps fit-ted, room height 3 or 4 m; rectangularroom with approx. 20 m2, 50 m2, or200 m2 with a length-to-width ratio ofabout 1.6:1. Reflection factors: ceiling70%, walls 50%, floor 20%. The roomsize (small, medium, large) determinesthe bar to use for the relevant type ofluminaire. Depending on the intensityof illumination required in the room(300 lx to 500 lx) the appropriatenumber of luminaires per 10 m2 canbe read off the vertical axis. A designfactor of 1.25 has already been incor-porated.

SPHEROS free-standing luminaire and wall light
Advanced lighting design requiresgreat creativity. SPHEROS giveslighting designers the functional versatility and flexibility they need fortranslating their ideas into action.
An established tool for architects andlighting designers, SPHEROS is an inno-vative lighting system that combinesconsistent design with a wealth of different luminaire and lighting options.
Design is more than just giving shapeto an object. Design is a consciousexpression of creative will, aimed atgiving the user an optimum productboth inside and out.
In SPHEROS, Hartmut S. Engel hasreduced optical volumes to a minimum.
»SPHEROS is the synthesis
of creativity and perfection.«

SAS
SAWWith the SPHEROS free-standing lumi-naire, the corner of the room becomesthe central focus of a highly effectivelighting display.
Soft direct lighting conveys cool ele-gance; indirect halogen lighting radia-tes warmth. The fascinating interplayof light and emotion is shown in thecombination of indirect and directlighting.
The strictly symmetrical design of thewall light, modelled on the ceilingluminaire, is in deliberate contrast withthe asymmetrical light distribution pattern.
This unusual configuration has metwith the widest acceptance. As anintegral part of the system configura-tion, the wall light creates prestigiousvisual and formal highlights. As the»leading light« in individualistic lighting scenes,it stands out for its decorative lightand shape.
