We use an Ultra Low Volume Cold Water Fogging technique that is quick and easy. After the Formula 429 fogging process, the treated area is back operational within the hour. Where as other infection solutions on the market dictate up to a 24 hour wait time before re entry.

The system can be used to treat all wards, clinical areas, patient areas, kitchens and any other area used by the general public, by using a formula that includes four different biocides. It is far quicker than traditional methods enabling treated areas to be back open and back in operation within one hour.

This system is non toxic, non corrosive and safe allowing sensitive equipment and all items to remain in situ during the fogging treatment.

The service has been developed in response to the NHS Smart Solutions initiative to find more effective ways to combat hospital infection and is the only product of its type to gainofficial Smart Solutions accreditation with microbiological results to back up the system.

British scientists have made an important breakthrough in the fight against hospital super bugs such as MRSA with a cleaning product which was invented to stop mould growth in bakeries and fish factories.

The Daily Telegraph can disclose that in the biggest trial of its kind the newly developed cleansing agent Byotrol has cut levels of MRSA on wards by one third compared with the NHS gold standard bleach.

The results from the 11-month independent study at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), following similar tests at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, have raised hopes that Superbugs could now be eradicated from hospitals.

Formula 429, an antimicrobial technology with 1% Byotrol, has a polymer based structure which enables it to kill bacteria days after being first applied unlike conventional bleaches which stop working shortly after they dry.

breeding grounds for bacteria. It has been used successfully for three years in an Icelandic fish factory to prevent infection. The polymer creates a surface tension effect which operates like a fly trap that literally tears apart the bacteria when they come into contact. The effect lasts for at least seventeen days, according to the tests’ data. Otherwise called ‘A Residual Efficacy’

Lord Warner, a former Labour health minister who is an adviser to Byotrol, said the Manchester results warranted a much wider use in the NHS. “I will be pressing ministers for the NHS to study these findings very closely,” he said.

Dr Andy Dodgson, consultant microbiologist at the MRI who led the trial, said: “These are very impressive results. Our study has shown a re-duction of one third in levels of MRSA in the ward when the new disinfectant was compared with the gold-standard NHS bleach-based cleaning agent.

“The new disinfectant has a clear role to play in helping hospitals in the battle to control HCASIs. Cutting the level of pathogens on the wards res-

cues the risk to patients of picking up an infection. The demonstration of a residual antibacterial effect is a major new discovery which will be an additional weapon for the NHS in the fight against Superbugs.”

The study at Manchester involved four general medical wards and after a few weeks produced a significant drop in MRSA levels. It continued to outperform the standard bleach during the rest of the 11 months.

The Manchester tests follow earlier ones at Glasgow Royal Infirmary which produced a 50 per cent fall in MRSA levels but over a shorter period. The tests have shown that it is also effective against Clostridium difficile, another major Superbug, but because its presence was low at MRI it was not possible to quantify its performance. The Manchester study is due to be published in the British Journal of Infection Control.

A National Audit Office report this month found that 300,000 patients – one in 12 – contracts an infection in English hospitals every year despite a £120 million deep clean which took place in the NHS last year.

A report by the British Medical Association estimated that Health Care Acquired Infections, (HCAIs) cost the economy up to £11 billion each year.
