THE RESEARCH CENTERThe Mobility Research Center uses expertise from a number of disciplines such as geriatrics, biomechanics, exercise physiology, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and neuropsychology to examine the mechanisms underlying mobility problems and to develop interventions to address these problems. Patients from the Mobility Enhancement Clinic are often referred to the Mobility Research Center for participation in innovative interventions.

THE CLINIC

The Mobility Enhancement Clinic focuses on assessments and interventions for older adults who have concerns or difficulty with walking, balance, falls, and endurance, whether they use an assistive device or not. The clinic is unique in its focus on the key factors influencing mobility in older adults. The assessment includes a physician evaluation that focuses on psychological, cardiopulmonary, vestibular

(inner ear), musculoskeletal, and overall neurological function. A social worker evaluation aids in understanding community and home-based supports and barriers to safe mobility. A physical therapist evaluation helps to develop a comprehensive treatment plan including an exercise program. State-of-the-art techniques in assessment and intervention are based on a companion research program in the Mobility Research Center.

Both the clinic and research center are directed by Neil Alexander M.D., who specializes in geriatrics at the University of Michigan Geriatrics Center.
