2 3Bombardier in Hungary

For centuries Hungary has been a vibrant country with a unique history and an exceptionally rich cultural heritage, which draws on its numerous neighbouring countries.

Over the past few decades, Hungary has been one of the success stories of the region with a remarkable acceleration of growth over the last twenty years. This success is the result of a remarkable determination to build its future in the 21st century. After its entry into the European Union Hungary’s role as one of the gateways into Central Europe has become even more pronounced, highlighting the importance of a well-functioning infrastructure. With an influx of foreign businesses and visitors on the Hungarian capital Budapest has become a hub of activity. As in other urban centres the need to supply reliable and attractive means of transportation for commuters is becoming increasingly important. By updating the vehicle fleet and acquiring more effective, comfortable and environmentally friendly vehicles Hungarian railway operators aim at offering excellent transportation services to passengers and freight carriers alike. At the same time the Hungarian government’s transportation policy aims to improve the rail system through gradual development and restructuring. Since the Railways Act of 2005 freight transportation has been liberalized and most operators are now privately owned.

Bombardier Transportation is an international market leader in rail engineering and technology. We offer one of the broadest portfolios of products and services in the rail industry, ranging from complete trains to sub-systems, maintenance services, system integration and signalling. Numerous decades of experience – some of our European sites are as old as the rail industry – provide us with the in-depth knowledge and experience that is needed to know and understand our customers’ requirements. With some 35,000 employees worldwide we continue a proud tradition of delivering ingenious rail transportation solutions for efficient rail services.

Competence for local and international markets

While Bombardier operates on a global scale, its strength grows from its local roots and competence. Our sites co-operate in a networked production system which has proven its efficiency in many international projects.

The portfolio of Bombardier Transportation in Hungary comprises: • Passenger coaches and main components for

commuter, regional and intercity trainsas well as trams• Complete life-cycle service and support:

- Vehicle refurbishment and modernization- General overhaul (main exam) of passenger coaches- Component repair and overhaul- Fleet maintenance

• Manufacturing of frames and primary parts for the full BOMBARDIER* FLEXX* bogie range

Bombardier Transportation has been present in Hungary for more than 15 years. Today Bombardier employs more than 1,000 people in two sites: the majority owned manufacturing plant in Dunakeszi and the fully owned bogie frame factory in Mátranovák. Both sites have a long industry tradition, that we want to continue.

At Dunakeszi Bombardier MÁV Kft. – a joint venture of Bombardier Transportation, the Hungarian State Railways MÁV and the employees - today is active in the manufacturing, retrofit, reengineering, overhauling and maintenance of passenger rail vehicles. Its main customers include Hungarian State Railways (MÁV ), Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurt Railway Company (GySEV),

Budapest Transport Authority (BKV) as well as national and private rail operators from Greece, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Bulgaria and Russia.

Dunakeszi siteThe site at Dunakeszi was established in 1926 as a repair workshop of MÁV and has been connected to the railway business ever since. Since 1952 almost 3,000 railway coaches have rolled out of Dunakeszi and the prodcution of the Z1 type (high speed) passenger coaches since the mid-1990s has made Bombardier MÁV Kft. one of the leading manufacturers for coaches in the European railway market. Using the “Large Panel Technology” for coach modernization developed in Dunakeszi, more than 750 coaches have been refurbished here in the last 15 years.Bombardier MÁV Kft. was the first company in the Hungarian railway industry to operate a quality assurance system in accordance with the ISO 9001 standard, an environmental management system certified to ISO 14001 and an occupational health and safety management system in accordance with OHSAS 18001.

4 5Bombardier in Hungary Regional and commuter

In recent years the Hungarian economy has expanded rapidly. As a result the capital Budapest has become a hub of activity.

Statistics show that 40 per cent of MÁV’s passenger volume is generated in the greater Budapest area. So the improvement of its infrastructure has become a priority. Furthermore a steep rise in car ownership made evident that not only more, but also more environmentally friendly mobility would need to be developed.

Efficient regional and commuter rail networks are the key to driving and enabling economic growth by accommodating large numbers of passengers and alleviating traffic conges-tion. As well as transporting high volumes of passengers – whether long distance or short – an efficient railway network is also the essence of sustainable mobility.

Proven technology Bombardier Transportation has extensive experience in providing customers with transport solutions tailored to their needs. Our portfolio encompasses a wide range of passenger vehicles ideally suited to the requirements of commuter, regional and intercity services. We ensure operational efficiency and flexibility by a modular design approach which brings together proven components and reduces maintenance as well as upgrading costs.

For decades Bombardier has been at the forefront of developments in the regional and commuter rail segments. Several thousand vehicles of different series demonstrate Bombardier’s product diversity in this segment: The ET family and its successors,

BOMBARDIER* TALENT* trains or the French Autorail Grand Capacité (AGC) as well as BOMBARDIER* ITINO* diesel multiple units and the popular BOMBARDIER* TWINDEXX* double deck trains are operating successfully throughout Europe.

A fleet of ten four-car TALENT trains is being operated in Hungary by MÁV. In 2008 a new generation of regional trains was presented by Bombardier: TALENT 2. In Germany they will form the future basis of Deutsche Bahn’s regional fleet.

Mátranovák siteThe Mátranovák factory has produced more than 10,000 bogie frames over the past 10 years. It manufactures frames and other primary parts that are essential components for the FLEXX bogies for trams, regional, intercity as well as high speed trains and locomotives. These FLEXX bogies are then integrat-ed in Bombardier vehicles and trains, that run successfully and safely in more than 40 countries around the world.

The site was acquired by Bombardier Transportation in 2005 and has been modernised continuously to reach highest quality standards. Significant investments were made including the installation of a welding robot and new welding machines as well as upgrading the IT-infrastructure. Thanks to these investments, Mátranovák has reached an annual capacity of 2,500 bogie frames, improved its manufacturing processes and enhanced the working environment for employees. Its high welding competence has earned Mátranovák several certifications and easily integrated it into Bombardier‘s networked production system.

Fast connections For faster connections from one city to the next Bombardier’s portfolio offers different trains for speeds from 160 km/h up to 380 km/h. Some European examples are:• TWINDEXX Swiss Express – electric multiple unit

Budapest can boast the second oldest metro line in the world – the first in continental Europe - and has more than a century’s experience in operating a subway system.

Bombardier Transportation’s experience in designing and building metros reaches back less than a century, but all knowledge has been distilled into our state-of-the-art metro platform BOMBARDIER* MOVIA*. One key requirement for modern metro trains is a strong and reliable propulsion performance with high availability and low maintenance costs. Other key differentiators are comfort and safety for passengers.

MOVIA metros are designed to fulfil these requirements. They have proven their efficient and cost-effective performance in high-volume operations around the world. The MOVIA concept is completely modular, enabling vehicles to be configured to meet customers’ infrastructure constraints, as well as present and future needs. With this built-in flexibility operators can select from various standardized features for different operational needs. Yet the customized exterior design and interior layouts allow each operator a train that perfectly suits its city.

Metros worldwideLondon Underground, the only metro system older than Budapest’s, is replacing more than 40% of its fleet on the Victoria and four sub-surface lines with new MOVIA metro trains by 2016. This currently is the biggest rail system upgrade in the world. The new trains will have all the

features of modern metro trains which ensure comfort and safety for passengers: wide doors with spacious entry areas, electronic information systems, air conditioning as well as CCTV cameras recording activities in all cars. The possibility to walk freely through the whole train, from one carriage to the next, is also very popular as it increases passengers’ feeling of safety.

Metros designed by Bombardier are also keeping other European capitals such as Bucharest, Berlin and Stockholm on the move. Beyond Europe Bombardier has supplied metros to cities in Asia and North America: Shanghai, Delhi, Montreal and New York are recent examples.

FLEXX Bogies: Driving You into the Future

FleXX eco – the lightest bogie in passenger transportation

Bombardier locomotives are designed to meet the challenges that the future has in store: going further, transporting more goods and passengers at lower cost and reduced energy consumption.

Bombardier Transportation is currently delivering 25 TRAXX P160 AC locomotives to Hungarian Railways MÁV. These are designed for passenger services throughout the country as well as for cross-border traffic to Austria and Germany. Their efficiency and reliability will make these locomotives as popular in Hungary as they have proven themselves to be throughout the European market.

Powerful mobility – TRAXXThe TRAXX locomotive family is designed for the transport of goods as well as passengers on national and international routes on all networks. There are electric AC, DC and multi-system versions as well as a diesel-electric version. They operate under all catenaries and accommodate the various country packages, including country-specific signalling systems. The interoperability of TRAXX locomotives simplifies schedules, reduces waiting times at border and minimises empty trips. The newest generation of TRAXX electric locomotives includes the Last Mile feature which permits operation into non-electrified railway sidings and terminals. Operators of TRAXX locomotives benefit from a large service network throughout Europe.

TRAXX locomotives are characterised by their technical flexibility, modular assembly, plus the advantages of long-term spare parts and commonality savings in a mixed fleet. They are energy efficient and cost effective thanks to their proven MITRAC propulsion and controls systems.

The key to shifting freight and passenger traffic on to rails lies in increasing traffic on the international rail corridors in Europe. A unified signalling standard, the train control system ERTMS, is an important factor in facilitating fast and safe cross-border rail traffic. Our interoperable TRAXX platform locomotives are already prepared for seamless ERTMS operation.

The success story of the TRAXX platform, with its innovative technologies for cross-border operation, speaks for itself. To date, more than 1,500 TRAXX locomotives have been ordered and more than 1,300 delivered for operation in 18 countries across Europe.
