By James P. Mock

In the past there has been more than one family history compiled on the descendant's of Fhederick and MotlenaMaucl who resided in Frederick Co., VA in the 176O's and l7l0's. Several recent discoveries have revealed

information that has changed several of these previous works. In an effort to Present the most accuraie record of this

family as poesible, the author has started the work on these lines over from scratch including only documented

sources. Connections to this family that cannot be pnoven and are suspected are indicated as such.

What follows is a list of the first three generations. The author has much more on these lines and is compiling what

will hopefully one day become a book on the Mauck/lVlauk/lVlock famtlies of Frederick Co., VA. Individuals

having information on any of these families ar€ requested to contact me at the below address. If you would like tosend information to be included in this work it would be very much appreciated. PLEASE INCLUDE YOURSOURCES.

Frederick's will was dated 0l Mar lTlg and proved 04 Mar lTlg in Frederick Co.,VA (Will Bk #app nAy It names

his wife as Motlena and his children as Mathias, Michael, Frederick and Barbara.

Assuming Frederick and Motlena were of age when their first son (Mathias) was born (about l75l) their dates ofbirth would likely be before 1733.

In Fredenck Co., Virginia Deed Bk #23 page 36 dated 2l Jan L79I, Mathias and Michael Mauck state nln

consideration of Jacob St€arly having given us a bill of sale of all his effects we do hereby obligate ourselves and

Frederick is identified as one of the children of Frederick & Motlena Mauck in the will of his father (FrederickCo., VA Will Bk#4 pp440) and in Frederick Co., VA Deed Bk #19 pp22O, when he and his brother, Michael, received land from Jacob Stearly and Mary Magdalene, Frederick's mother. Assuming Frederick was of agewhen he married Barbara Cryzer, his date of birth would be estimated before 1765. The date range for his deathwas estimated from the date of his marriage to the date of Barbara's second marriage to Frederick's brother,Michael.

Frederick and Barbara's marriage, 16 Aug l7&1, appears in the Frederick Co.,VA marriage register. Theminisler was Alexander Balmain and Barbara's last name is indicated as Kaiser. Frederick's marriage to Barbaraand his rclation to Michael Mauck also appear in the will of Michael Mauck in kederick Co.,VA dated 3l Decle29 (Will bk. #16 pp 67). MOCK FAMILY EISTORIAN VOLUME 11 - NO.3 SUMMER 1993 31

Michael's will was written 3l Dec 1829 and probated 3 May 1830 (Frederick Co.,VA Will bk #16 pp 67). In ithe lise his children as George Mauck (dec'd), Nancy L-anick (dec'd), wife of Joseph l-anick, Rgbecca Barrow

and her daughter l-ouisa Barrow, Jacob Mauck, Frederick Mauck and Louisa Hammick, wife of Samuel

Hammick. Fle identifies Mary Bean, wife of William Bean, as a daughter of his late wife (from Barbara's first

marriage to Michael's brother Frederick). Michael lists the children of his son George as Jonas Henry, Abraham

Pick, Robert and Michael George. He also leaves money to Catherine l-enheart, wife of Jacob Lenheart.

Michael appoints Solomon Harmon and Joseph Larrick as the execu[or's of his will.

The Frederick Co.,VA marriage register indicates that on l1 Dec 1828 Evalina Haniet Mauk manied Solomon

Harman. The minister was John Allemong. There has been speculation that Evalina u'as a daughter of Michael

based on Solomon Harman being an executor of Michael's will. No proof has been found that Evalina was

Michael's daughter. She does not appear in his will, however, there has been speculation that Michael may have

written an earlier will. This will has not been found.

There has also been speculation that Catherine Lenheart was another daughter of Michael. No proof of this has

been found and she in not indicated as his daughter in his will, unlike his other daughters.

In addition to the land in Front Royal, VA (later sold in Frederick Co.,VA Deed Bk #42pp 56, dated 15 Nov

1819 and described as being on Happy Creek in Front Royal), Michael purchased land on both sides of Back

Creek in Frederick Co.,VA Deed Bk #35 pp 162, dated 28 Dec 1812, purchased land on a drain of Crcoked Run

Stearly, mother's second husband in Frederick Co., VA Deed Bk #19 pp 222 datr.t 4 Jan 1781)' Michael's willalso mentions land owned on Back Creek and Busch Creek. Additional land purchases by Michael are shown inFrederick Co., VA Deed 8k325 ppy6,datd4Feb 1799 and Frederick Co., VA Deed Bk #2App lT2,dated2Jan 18O4. These two do not provide adescription ofthe exact location ofthe property.

In the 1787 tax list of Frederick Co.,VA, Michael lists no white males lG2l, no blacks, I horse or mule and no

canle. Michael appears in the l8lO census (over 45 years) and 1820 census of Frederick Co.,VA. This provided

the estimate for Michael's date of birth. He also appears in tax levy's recorded yearly in Frederick Co., VACourt Minutes l8l4- 1826.

Michael may also be the Michael Mauck that appears in the estate sale of a George Mauck (Frederick Co., VAWill Bk #SC2 pp l93,dated 28 Oct l8G). This George, his wife Sophia and their children came fromPennsylvania to Frederick Co., VA probably in the late 1770's and resided near Middleton. It has been

speculated, but not proven, that this George was a brother of Michael's father, Frederick.

l3.l Frederick George Mauck b. 16 May 1790; m. 30 Jul l8l2 Frederick Co.,VA Eve Snyder, M#l Jacob

Snyder.

InFrederick Co.,VA guardian bonds dated 2 Apr l82l (the dat€ of her marriage) Elizabeth Christy is listed as anorphan of Robert Christy. Her guardian was James Chrisfy.

George appears in Frederick Co.,VA Court Minutes tax levy's 7 Jun 1820 and 7 Jun 1821 with his father,Michael.

Michael's will also identified her husband as Joseph l-anick and that at the time of the will she wasdeceased. Nancy's date of birth range is calculated from the marriage of her parents and assuming she was oflegal age when she was married. Nancy's marriage to Joseph,30 Mar 1816, is recorded in the Frederick Co., VAmarriage register. The minister was John B. Tilden.

Joseph left no will and his probate records begin appearing in 1&17 (Warren Co., VA Will Bk f22pp 137).

13.5 Rebecca Mauckb. 1788-1795;m.22Mar l8t3 Frederick Co.,VA Abraham Barrow

Rebecca is identilied as a daughter of Michael and Barbara in Michae's will (Rederick Co.,VA Will Bk #16pp67). Michael's will also identifies her manied name of Barrow and her daughter l-ouisa Barrow. Rebecca's dateof birth range is calculated from the marriage of her parents and assuming she was of legal age when she wasmanied. Rebecca's marriage to Samuel, 22Mar 1813, is recorded in the Frederick Co., VA marriage register. The bondsman was Michael Mauck.

13.6 Louisa Mauck b. abt l8O5 VA: m. 23 Nov 1824 Frederick Co.,VA Samuel Hammock b. abt I8O3,VA.

lnuisa is identified as a daughter of Michael and Barbara in Michael's will (Frederick Co., VA Will Bk #16 pp67). Michael's will also identihes her husband as Samuel Hammock. l-ouisa's marriage to Samuel Hammock 3Nov 1824 is recorded in the Frederick Co., VA marriage register. The minister was John B. Tilden.

l-ouisa appears in the 185O census of Fairfield Co., OH next to her brother Michael and his family. She isenumerated with her husband and children, providing her date and location of birth.

13.7 Jacob Mauck m.24Mar l8l7 Frederick Co.,VA Abigail Shambaugh daughter of Daniel Shambaugh.

Jacob is identifiedas a son of Michael and Barbara in Michael's will (Frederick Co.,VA Will Bk #16 pp 67).

There is no direct evidence that this Jacob is the Jacob who married Abigail Shambaugh 24Mar 1817, thebondsman being Marcus Baker. However, there is substantial circumstantial evidence that this is the sameJacob.

Michael Mauck owned Property on the drains of Crooked Run in what became Warren Co., VA (Frederick Co.,VA Deed Bk#45 pp 175). Daniel Shambaugh's will identifies Abigail as his daughter and divides property he

owned on Crooked Run (Warren Co., VA Will Bk #A pp 12). Benjamin Shambaugh is identified as Abigail'sbrother. Benjamin was paid mon€y owed by the estate of George Mauck, Jacob's brother. Abigail appears in the1830 census of Frederick Co.,VA next to Elizabeth Mauck, the widow of George Mauck, brother of Jacob.Daniel Shambaugh's children also married Larricks'(Frederick Co., VA Guardian Bonds Jan 1803). MarcusBaker, the bondsman of Jacob and Abigail's marriage, was a public official in Cedarville, Warren Co., VA(Warren Co., VA Court Minutes Bk A p l5l). Cedarville lies adjacent Crooked Run. Marcus Baker wasinvolved in a lawsuit with Jonas H. Shambaugh (Abilgail's brother) in 1839 (Warren Co., VA Chancery OrdersBk A p 16).

Jacob may be the Jacob Mauck who appears in the 1820 census of Mason Co., VA (WV). There are severalother possibilities for the Jacob in this census, however, Jacob's son, Jonas (b.abt 1819) in the 186O censusindicates he was born in OH, other census's he indicated VA. Mason Co., VA is adjacent OH.

In 1850 Abigail is enumerated with her son Jonas in Warren Co., VA.

1.4 Bar-bara Mauck m. l2 Feb 1823 Frederick Co., VA Abraham Supinger

Barbara is identified as a child of Frederick and Motlena in Frederick's will (Frederick Co.,VA Will Bk #4 pp44O). Barbara's marriage to Abraham 12 Feb lE23 is in the Frederick Co., VA mamage register. This bondsmanwas Michael Mauck.

MOCKFAMILY EISTORIAI! VOLUME 1I . NO.3 SUMMER 1993 34

THE EARLY IIREDERICK MAUCKS OF FREDERICK AND SIIBNANDOAH CO.VA.by Ronald Il[. Moore, ]LD.

The Frederick and Motlena Mauck line in Frederick Co.,VA has long baffled researchers as to their origin. The lirstrecord of Frederick there was when he purchased land from Jeremiah Wood 12 Mar 1763. Some have felt them to beimmigrant ancestors from Germany having arrived here before the Revolution. Others believe they may have beenborn here and descended from an older Mauck family. One theory has been that this Frederick is a son of PeterMauck who arrived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the mid l73o's. This theory is tempting because there isno question that Peler Mauck did have a son by the name of Frederick who was named in his will dated I Mrar lTllin Frederick Co., VA. This was a year before Shenandoatr Co. was formed from Frederick Co.

The purpose of this note is not !o shed any new light as to where Frederick and Motlena ultimately came from, but tohelp put to rest one theory as to which family he originated and that was that he was not a son of Pet€r Mauck wholived at Tom's Brook and who died in ITll in Frederick Co.

There is evidence that this Frederick who owned property in Tom's Brook, which after 17'72was in ShenandoahCo.,VA is a separat€ and distinct person from Frederick Mauck who was married to Motlena and lived in FrederickCo.. VA and died in 1779.

There is a deed recorded in Shenandoah Co., Deed Bk. C, pp3*355 that shows that Frederick Mauck and wifeMargaret sold land to Martin Black in Tom's Brmk which is the area where Peter Mauck lived. The date of thistransaction was 26 May lTl9. This property was part of the original division of the estate of Peter Mauck which wasdivided among his sons. There seems little doubt that this Rederick who was manied to Margaret was the sonmentioned in Peter's will.

On I Mar lTIg of the same year in Frederick Co.,VA, Frederick Mauck who was married to Motlena signed his willand four days later he had died when his will was proved in Frederick Co. on 4Mar lTI9. (See MFH Vol. I, No.4,Nfray 1992) Frederick Mauck who was manied to Motlena had been dead for more than two months when Frederickand Margaret Mauck signed the deed and sold their property in Tom's Brook, Shenandoah Co., VA. These twoFredericks then could not be the same person.

Little is known of Frederick Mauck and Margaret after they sold their property in Shenandoah Co. According toWilliam Wolph in his book, TIIE DESCENDANTS OF PETER MAUCK, 1708-1980 ,he believed that they mayhave moved to Ohio. Although I personally have not made an exhaustive search for them, I know of no one else whohas found them after lTl9.l would be interested in corresponding with anyone who may have any additionalinformation on this family, and would like to find out if they had any children.

Andrew Mauk and l)escendants of Sullivan Co., Tennesseeby Vandy Marilyn) Mauk

edited by Steve Lapp

Mrs. Vandy (Marilyn) Mauk of Bristol, Tennessee has spent many years and much effort in compiling the pedigree

chart of hei husband, Robert L. Mauk. We are very fortunate that she has mailed us this information and granted us

permission to publish it in this quarterly. We have chosen to only include the first few generations. You may wnte tous for a more complete record and more detailed sources.

Andrew MAUK was one of the four male children of Peter MAUK and Julianna RHEINHART of Frederick Co.,

VA. The other three were John, Frederick, and Henry. A good account o[ Peter MAUK and his son John, along withmost of John MAUK'S descendants, appears in William R. Wolph's excellent book,'The Descendants of PeterMauck I7O8-19ffi'. Mr. Wolph's research did not include information about Andrew and his descendants. ThereforeVandy Mauk's work offers a good addiuon and companion to the Wolph book-

Andrew MAUK was bom about 1761, according to his 1832 pension application for having served in the Amencan

Revolution against the British. He was drafted into the Continental Army from Shenandoah Co.,VA in 1779 and

discharged from service in Randolph Co.,NC in 1781.

In North Carolina records, reprinted in MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN Vol. I, page 37,we find the baptisms ofEsther and Sarah Mock, daughters of Andreas and Elizabeth Mock, at Heidelberg Lutheran Church in Rowan Co.,

NC, in l79l and 1794. This matches other information we have on Peter's son Andrew, so this is definitely the same

family.

"Abstracts of Deeds of Rowan Co.,NC" by JoWhite Linn include a Dec 30, 1785 transfer of 25O acres on Bear Creek

from Gasper Sein to Andrew MOCK for f,5o. This is most likely the same as Andrew married to Elizabeth.

Cora [-ee Jones, a descendant, wrote in family records, 'Andrew MAUK, Sr. came with other settlers from NorthCarolina about 1800, and built a log house in what is known as Silva Cola in Sullivan Co., Tennessee." In fact, l'797

tax lists for Sullivan Co. include Andrew Mauk.

According to family tradition, Andrew MAUK was married to Elizabeth BOWLES. The following is a list of theirchildren and some of their descendants. Andrew Mauk died in Sullivan Co., Tennessee in 1834.

One important piece of information thathas not been provided is whether it can be ascertained if the recorded information was provided by the originalowner of the bible or was transcribed by a later family member....... Vol. I #5 Philip Mock: I find it difficult to make the leap from Johannes Mock (Berks Co.,PA) to Philip &Devault Mock. Paragraph one identilled Philip and Devault as brothers who are then 'identified' in the JohannesMock will mentioned in paragraph 3 which is noticeable devoid of any reference to a Devault Mock. There has beensome inference that the Theobald mentioned is aka Devault or Devaulter. Theobald was a popular Germanic name, one which I have never seen translated into the form of Devault or Devaulter. Thmbald was often converted to"Davidn, the English equivalent, neither of which can be phonetically connected to the Devault name.

As I alluded to in my comments re Vol. I #r I pg 4.; it is clear, at least to me that the Devaulter that married PhoebeClinard cannot reasonable be assumed to be the same person as that listed in the Rowan Co. taxpayers for 1759. If,as the article says, he was born in Germany in 1755, he was certainly the youngest landholder and property owner inthe Colonies. A most plausible scenario might be that there were two Devault Mocks, the 1759 Devault being theSenior, leaving the probablility that the three Mocks which are prominent in Rowan from lTlS onn (Peter, Devaultand Philip) are brothers. Their ages and proximity certainly enhance this assumption. I would like to see thereferences mentioned in which Dr. Mann refers to deeds using both the Devault and Theobold names and what datesare involved. I am assuming that the deeds referred to are part of the Berks Co. (PA) deed records..
