Opequon refers to those homesteads on or near the Opequon Creek inearly Orange Co.,VA (near the present day town of Winchester). Dr.Moore referred to the above RUDI and PETER in his editorial in thefirst issue of the MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN. There are several other MAAGg and MACHs ln Stoever's records' Thesehave been largely lgnored because thelr relatlonshlp has not beenestablished. However, they are of interest:

Page 7L t?56, Sept 30 Conrad Hornberger & Catarina Maag, Bethel.

Bethel was an early settlement in Pennsylvania, Other Lutheran andReformed Church records of PA for the eighteenth century contain manynarnes spelled MAAG. Perhaps a deflnltive study of these will somedayestabl Ish thelr relationship.

When the original Stoever recgrd book stas translated in 1895, thefirst four pages were missing. They have since been found arnongpapers of the Gratz Col lection at the Historical Society ofPennsylvania. Although they have never been published, they ereretranslated by Paul Bleyden and a copy of the translation vras fastenedinto the 1895 volume which resides in the reading room of theHistorical Society. A copy of these unpubllshed "lost" pa€tes can beobtained directly'from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania forrE15.OO, or for $2.00 Steve Lapp wil I gladly reproduce his copy: SteveLapp, 98 tfhitney St., San Francisco, CA 94L3L.

I'HICH GEORGE IS WHO ????

by Steve Lapp

In past written histories, the GEORGE MOCK,/MACKs of early Pennsylvaniahave often been confused and mixed up with each other. Indeed, therecords are so few and incomplete that the researcher is reluctant toattempt a clarification. Two such GEORGE MACKs lived within 25 milesof each other during the mid 1700s one in York Co.,PA near thepresent town of York, and the other in Warwick Township, LancasterCo.,PA near present day Brickerville.Venita Hurr Foster (a current subscriber to MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN)obtained baptismal records from the York Co. Historical Society whichfirmly establish the family members of GEORGE and MARIA EVA MACK. Thefol lowing baptisms are from Christ Lutheran Church:

A. John George Mark(?) or Mack born 7NovI749, bapt. 25NovParents John and Magdalena Mark(?) or MackSponsors George Kuehns and wife Mary El lzabeth

1. Jacob Mack born 18oct1,772, bapt. 25octParents John George and Eva MackSponsors Jacob Smyser and wi fe

2. Magdalena Mack born 26Dec1774, bapt. 12MarI775Parents George and Eva MackSponsors George Beck and wife

3. John George Mack born 25Feb1778, bapt. SMarParents John George Mack and EvaSponsors Jacob Smyser and wife

4. John Mack born 03Nov1779, bapt. 30Apr1780Parents George Mack and EvaSponsors George Burk and wife

5. Michael Mack born 27tlayL782, bapt. O2JuneParents John George Mack (mother not I isted).Sponsor Catharine Jacoby

6. Mary Magdalen Mack born 30MayL789, bapt. 09NovParents George Mack and EvaSponsor Magdalen Schrist (Sechrist?)

The above family members are confirmed in the will of George Mockdated 08Jan1810 and filed in Bedford Co,PA. This George Mock servedin the Revolutionary War. Please refer to Venita Foster's book, .CLIEDWITH M8.....MY FAMILY TREE. published in 1989. It has not been confirmed that theGeorqe Mack born 07Nol/1749 is the same Georqe above married to Eva.

From the Emanuel Lutheran Church records and civi I records fromWarwick Township in Lancaster Co.,PA vre find the following, inChronological order:

L756 - Henry Mock is taxable in Warwick Township.1759 - Heinrich and Margaret Mock sponsor a Stover child in bapt.L76O Heinrich and Margaret Mock sponsor Eichelberger child.1,761 George Mock married Sophia Miller on April 2t.

(maybe Sophia Muller,7738 immigrant on Ship Glasgow-Edit.)

L762 - Sept. 10 dau. Catharina born, sponsors in bpt wereHeinrich Mock and Catharine Muller.

t77L Jan. 5 - son George born, sponsors in baptism were JacobMuller and wife Anna Maria.

t761, Henry Moke from Warwick Township was natural ized March 30

From Heidelberg Reformed Church in Schaefferstown, Lebanon Co.,PA(approx I miles at most from Warwick Township) vre f ind the followingchildren of Henry and Eva Mock:

John George Mock b. 25Feb1773 - sponsors George and Sophia Mock.Adam Mock b.Phi I ip Mock b.

17661777

Henry and El izabeth also, birthdates not I isted.

1785 - Henry and Eva Mogg sponsor Herchelroth daughter inbapt i sm.

We al I can speculate on the relationships suggested by the aboveinformation, but hopefully more substantial data will be forthcomlngfrom MOCK FAMILY HISTORIAN readers and researchers.

One final note3 several researchers in the past have claimed that eachof the GEORGE MACKs from the above two fami I ies $ras the immigrantaboard the ship Rawley, which was received in Phi ladelphia 230ct1,752.This group of Palatines vras headed by the Lutheran minister JohnGeorge Bager (first on ship list) who preached for many years atHanover in York Co.,PA. From the "Adolph Gerber Lists of Emigrantsfrom Wuerttembergr' 'hre- f ind GEORG MACK:

Journeyman vreaver. Son of the Justiciary and weaver Johann HeinrichMack at Laiehingen. Wf: Anna Maria Hail, daughter of the shoemakerJohannes Hail. Ch. Petersras married ca L767 and moved from Washington Co. to Bedford Co. inL774. George had a son named Peter. Peter named two sons George andChristopher. George's son, Rhinehart also migrated to Bedford Co. Mygrand father told me about his father taking the family to Indiana torelatives wlth the idea of settling there (somewhere on the WabashRiver.) We had always assumed the relatives were descendants of Peteror Thinehart who had moved to Bedford Co. no proof (1870s) Note:Peter would have been 7 years old in L752 and 22 in L767 if George andPeter were the sons of Johannes and Maria Maas.
