On behalf of the Montgomery County, Maryland Food Council, we are honored to release this first edition of the Food and Beverage Guide, which highlights the diverse array of food and beverage products produced in the County or made by businesses headquartered here.
Encouraging residents and businesses to eat and drink locally is central to our mission of creating a more robust and sustainable food system in our County. There are extensive economic, health, and environmental benefits of eating locally: we support businesses in our community, create jobs for local residents, consume products of greater nutritional value, and minimize our carbon footprint.
While this guide includes locally-made packaged products, beverages, baked goods, confections, and more, we also encourage residents to buy fruits and vegetables, meat, and dairy from Montgomery County farms. About theMoCo Food Council:
The Food Council is an independent nonprofit with the mission of connecting all individuals and organizations interested in improving the environmental, economic, social, and nutritional health of the County. The Food Council was formed in 2011 and has 25 members, including chefs, food entrepreneurs, and representatives of local government, nonprofits, and businesses. Food Council activities are accomplished primarily through our four Working Groups: monthly gatherings open to the public. This guide is an initiative of the Food Economy Working Group, which supports our County’s farmers and food and beverage artisans and makes connections between local producers and consumers.
The Food Council has three additional Working Groups: Environmental Impact: Protect and improve the environmental resources of Montgomery County related to agriculture and food, such as soil, water, and biodiversity; Food Recovery and Access: Increase recovery of, equitable access to, and advocacy for more healthful food for County residents by building the capacity of food-related organizations, reducing food waste, and strengthening collaboration; and Food Literacy: Improve eating habits through advocacy and education on healthy food choices, cooking skills, school and community gardening, food safety, and food marketing.
