Sociologie et sociétés, 26(1), 59–69. https://doi.org/10.7202/001102ar Article abstract In Canada, there are several minority Francophone communities: local, provincial, regional and national. They differ in their internal situation, population composition, and the demographic, socioeconomic, legal and political context in which they are found. Faced with this diversity, one of the challenges for sociological analysis is to conceptualize and, if necessary, analyze empirically the modes of belonging to and identifying with the community, that is, the variations in the nature and the intensity of the relationship that individuals establish with the communities of which they are geographically members. This essay proposes a framework based on three axes or dimensions, each constituting a continuum from more or less positive to more or less negative: the pragmatic or utilitarian axis which defines the community as a space for economic, political or social action; the social interdependence axis wherein the economic and political fate of individuals, as well as their social status, depends on the fate and the status of the community; and the common cultural heritage axis wherein individuals recognize each other as having certain distinctive characteristics. Some types of individual-community relations are identified for each of these three dimensions.

Article abstractIn Canada, there are several minority Francophone communities: local, provincial, regional and national. They differ in their internal situation, population composition, and the demographic, socioeconomic, legal andpolitical context in which they are found. Faced with this diversity, one of thechallenges for sociological analysis is to conceptualize and, if necessary, analyze empirically the modes of belonging to and identifying with thecommunity, that is, the variations in the nature and the intensity of therelationship that individuals establish with the communities of which they aregeographically members. This essay proposes a framework based on threeaxes or dimensions, each constituting a continuum from more or less positiveto more or less negative: the pragmatic or utilitarian axis which defines thecommunity as a space for economic, political or social action; the socialinterdependence axis wherein the economic and political fate of individuals, aswell as their social status, depends on the fate and the status of the community;and the common cultural heritage axis wherein individuals recognize eachother as having certain distinctive characteristics. Some types ofindividual-community relations are identified for each of these threedimensions.
