Introduction The most powerful weapons

in the world, at least those known to the public are what.

• Nuclear

• Rail guns

• Lasers None of these can come close to the power that God gives to each of us… The Power of Prayer.

Points Author: Matthew and Luke Description: We will be looking at the Model Prayer in Luke 11 and Matthew 6, which illustrates the way, and types of prayer.

Topic or verse Notes

[Lk 11:1] And it came to pass,

that, as he was praying in a

certain place, when he

ceased, one of his disciples

said unto him, Lord, teach

us to pray, as John also

taught his disciples.

Description: The Apostle Luke was keen on details, and without doubt saw the importance of prayer through the actions (Prayers) of Christ. If God incarnate took the time to pray, then don’t you think we should do the same. Notable People:

• Christ Notable Events:

• Throughout the ministry of Christ, Christ himself demonstrates the importance of prayer, the need of prayer and the benefits of prayer.

Key Area / Idea / Topic

• The acknowledgement of the importance of prayer

• The need to understand how to pray Notes:

• It is vital to understand that this is a model, a template if you will on how we are to pray.

• We will see that Christ did not intend for us to mimic or recite this “model” over and over. As a matter of fact he warned us not to do just that.

[Mt 6:5] And when thou

prayest, thou shalt not be as

the hypocrites are: for they

Description: Christ warns of the vain (emptiness) of repetitive prayers. Definitions:

love to pray standing in the

synagogues and in the

corners of the streets, that

they may be seen of men.

Verily I say unto you, They

have their reward.

(a)And when thou prayest,

(b)thou shalt not be as the

hypocrites are:

(c)for they love to pray

standing in the synagogues

and in the corners of the

streets, that they may be

seen of men. Verily I say

unto you, They have their

reward.

• Hypocrite - One who assumes a false appearance; one who feigns to be what

he is not, or to feel or believe what he does not actually feel or believe; especially, a false pretender to virtue or piety.

• Piety – Religious devotion, act, thought, or statement. (a)Notes:

• There is a person aspect and expectation of prayer.

• “When” (not if) thou prayest (b)Notes:

• There is an expectation of pureness of heart and honesty

• It is personal! (c)Notes:

• Prayer is not for self-Justification

• Prayer is not meant to bring “Awe” on us

[Mt 6:7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Description: It is not about the number of words, but the sincerity of heart. The source of the prayers if you will. Definitions:

• Vain – Empty. Lacking substance or worth.

• Heathen - One who is regarded as irreligious, uncivilized, or unenlightened. In this case one that is not a believer in Christ.

(a)Notes:

• There is an expectation of honesty.

• God is not hard hearing, so we need not continually repeat the same thing over and over in the same prayer time.

• It is vital to understand the difference between praying for the same thing again during another prayer session and repeating the same “mantra” over and over

Repeated request vs Mantra:

• A repeated request is not something we need to do and not for the benefit of God. It is generally for the benefit of us, comfort if you will. It does illustrate the importance of something to us, however, God already knows that.

• I personally will have the same requests, what we have to be careful of is that those do not simply become words and loss their importance and meaning.

[Lk 11:2] And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

(a) When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name

Description: The first part of the model. There are multiple types of prayer and order in this model Definitions:

• Reverence - Reverence in the sense of paying respect to some distinguished person The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

• Hallowed - to “make sacred,” The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

• Adoration - the act of paying honor to a divine being The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

Notable People:

• Notable Events:

• First TYPE of prayer is revealed (Adoration)

• The foundation of the prayer.

• All good things should be properly founded

• Start of on the “Right Foot”

• There is an order to things (a)Notes:

• Prayer of Reverence - Reverence in the sense of paying respect to some distinguished person is mentioned in the KJV in 2 Samuel 9:6; 1 Kings 1:31; Esther 3:2, 5 The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

• It should be clear that we first start by clearly recognizing the deity ship of God. Acknowledging who and where God is.

• It is made clear that the God of our heart and prayers in the one true God that resides in Heaven (the third Heaven).

Third Heaven [2Co 12:2] I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. Importance – Two-fold:

1. Reminds us that we have been granted direct access to God through the death of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Ghost.

2. Displays our reverence for and of God. Direct access is granted through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. [Ro 8:26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Examples of Adoration in the Bible: putting off the shoes (Exodus 3:5; Joshua 5:15), bowing the knee (Genesis 41:43), falling prostrate (Genesis 43:26; Daniel 2:46), and kissing (Luke 7:38). The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

[Lk 11:2b] And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Description: Acknowledge of the divinity and the plan of God. Notes:

• Coming Kingdom of God regardless of the acts of Man

• Fulfillment and the completeness of Gods plan

• Desire that the state of Heaven be manifested on Earth through the acts of man.

• Desire to be Christ-Like o Actions are above the nature of man o That we, our actions transition to a state that are Christ-Like in nature, not

forged out of the lust & vengeance of man’s heart.

• There is a deeper thread to this: o Before we have even sent a single request to God we have already (through

this model) ▪ Acknowledged the deity-ship of God ▪ Expressed our desire to be Christ-Like ▪ We have set the parameters for our prayers, and probably didn’t

even realize it. [Lk 11:3] Give us day by day our daily bread.

Description: The acknowledge of total reliance on God Notes:

• Recall when Christ sent the 70. They were sent in total reliance on God. (Luke 10:4)

Page 5: Model & General Types of Prayer...Model & General Types of Prayer 2 The Haven of Christ Ministries love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they

[Lk 11:3] Give us day by day our daily bread.

[Lk 10:1] After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two

and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. [Lk 10:3] Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. [4] Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.

• There is the acknowledgement that nothing is too small for God and we are confessing what we need that day.

• For many there are some requests that are repeated on a daily basis, and then there are those that are specific to a certain day.

If I am asked to pray for a particular thing, I will often lift that to God, most of the time instantly, and then try to follow-up the next time I am in my prayer closet. Unless it is grave, or burdened by the Holy Ghost I may not continue to lift that same request to God each day. I believe that God heard and will act in the manner that he so choses. Know this - And you have to understand otherwise you will become seriously and severely disheartened. God answers prayers that he hears in the fashion that pleases HIM. [Isa 55:8] For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. [Ro 9:15] For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (Exodus 33:19)

[Lk 11:4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Description: This is a call to remembrance and the first step in reconciliation with God for the sinful acts of man.

• We DO NOT believe there any other redemption of sin other that what Christ provided on the cross.

• That the sinful acts of the redeemed do not damn us to Hell; We cannot loss our salvation. The sin in our lives has an effect on the flesh and not on the eternal sate of salvation (destination of the Spirit).

(a) ] And forgive us our sins;

• Reconciliation - the restoration of friendly relations. (a)Notes:

• This is not a request for God to once again send Christ to the cross, but the realization of sinful acts we have committed.

• Here we are to be specific if possible (why)? o It helps us to prevent repeat actions (failures) o Calls us into remembrance for the fact that we have a flesh, which has a sin-

nature. One which we must be mindful of. o Helps us with the reconciliation with God. Brings us closer to him. o If we continue to deceive ourselves, how can be honest with God?

• We must be honest and admit to the Unholy actions and things in our lives. The litmus is the Bible, not what we, or anyone else thinks

Supplication - Asking for things

Description: Definitions:

• Supplication - requests addressed by men to God (James 5:16; 1 Peter 3:12, “prayer”);

• any pious address to God (Phil. 4:6; cf. 1 Tim. 2:1; 1 Tim. 5:5). The New Unger's Bible Dictionary.

[Jas 5:16] Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. [1Pe 3:12] For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. [Php 4:6] Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

[1Ti 2:1] I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and

giving of thanks, be made for all men; Notes:

Intercession - Asking on behalf of others

Description: In the simplest of terms, to pray for others Definitions:

• "to make a petition" or "intercede on behalf of another" (hyper, "on behalf of," and

No. 1), is used in Rom. 8:26 of the work of the Holy Spirit in making "intercession" Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

Notes:

• To be honest this may not be the easiest thing to do. o Right may not always be easy, but right is right o Will get easier once we pray in the Spirit and not in the flesh o Disappointment in prayer is prayer in the flesh

• [Ro 8:26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

• Most notable example - [Lk 23:32] And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. [33] And when they were come to the place, which is called

• Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. [34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

• Our call from Christ to pray for our enemies [Mt 5:43] Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and

hate thine enemy. [44] But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good

to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and

persecute you; •

Thanksgiving - Thanking God. Description: Saying thanks for what God has done! Definitions:

• Grace – Receiving the blessing of God that we do not deserve

• Mercy – Not receiving the judgement (wrath) from God that we do deserve Notes:

• When do we give thanks?

• Why do we give thanks

• To whom do we give thanks

[1Th 5:16] Rejoice evermore. [17] Pray without ceasing. [18] In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning

you. [19] Quench not the Spirit. [20] Despise not prophesyings. [21] Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. [22] Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Worth Noting

[Jer 33:3] Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things,

which thou knowest not.

[Jas 4:3] Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon

your lusts.

[Ro 8:25] But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. [26] Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray

for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot

be uttered. [27] And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he

maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
