GeneralDescriptionThe Tyco® 2 thru 8 inch (DN50 thruDN200) Model PRV-1 Pressure Re-ducing Valves are factory assembledand fully trimmed valve arrangementsfor pressure control. They are used onwater filled pipe where it is necessaryto reduce a higher inlet pressure toa lower delivery pressure under staticand/or residual flowing conditions. ThePRV-1 is intended to automaticallymaintain the outlet “set pressure”(static and residual) within a closerange, regardless of fluctuations in thehigher pressure inlet line or varyingflow rates.
The PRV-1 is provided with a factoryoutlet “set pressure” of 125 psi (8,6bar); however it may be field set to anominal outlet “set pressure” of 80 to225 psi (5,5 to 15,5 bar) per its FMApproval or 80 to 150 psi (5,5 to 10,3bar) per its UL Listing.
Typical applications are as follows:
• Within the main header (Ref. Figure1) supplying wet pipe, dry pipe, del-uge, or preaction system risers,and/or a standpipe system supply-ing hose connections.
• As part of a sectional floor controlassembly (Ref. Figure 2) supplyingsprinkler systems, and/or hose sta-tions.
Features are as follows:
• Can be installed in any orientation.
• Eliminates any required bleeding oftrapped air from the diaphragmchamber during installation.
• Globe or angle pattern.
• Accurate pressure control.
• Standard nylon coated internal andexternal.

OperationWith reference to Figure 4, the systemwater supply pressure from the inletcavity of the PRV-1 enters the Dia-phragm Chamber through a Strainerand Needle Valve. The factory setNeedle Valve provides the requiredorifice size for the supply line to theDiaphragm Chamber to optimize per-formance.
Exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamberthrough the Pilot Valve is controlled bya regulating spring that is factory set,and subsequently field adjustable, tothe desired downstream “set pressure”that is to be maintained. A sensing lineconnects the outlet of the Pilot Valveto the system piping downstream ofthe PRV-1 via the Pressure SensorInsert in the outlet cavity.
When the downstream pressure risesabove the “set pressure” of the spring, exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamberthrough the Pilot Valve to the PRV-1outlet cavity is stopped and pressureincreases in the Diaphragm Chamber. When downstream pressure falls be-
low the “set pressure” of the spring, exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamberthrough the Pilot Valve to the PRV-1outlet cavity resumes and pressure inthe Diaphragm Chamber decreases.
The regulated flow through the PilotValve decreases and increases thepressure in the diaphragm chamber tosufficiently open and close the PRV-1,as required, to regulate the down-stream “set pressure”.
The operation sequence is as follows:
• When there is no flow demanddownstream of the PRV-1, thePRV-1 Seat is closed and the PilotValve Seat is closed. With the PilotValve Seat closed, pressure istrapped in the Diaphragm Chamberto seat the Diaphragm and thePRV-1 remains closed.
• When there is a flow demand down-stream of the PRV-1 and the PRV-1outlet pressure drops below the “setpressure, the Pilot Valve Seat opensto relieve pressure from the Dia-phragm Chamber allowing thePRV-1 to open.
• As the flow demand continues down-stream of the PRV-1 and the “setpressure” is met, the Pilot ValveSeat closes. As the Pilot Valve Seatcloses to reduce the opening, pres-sure is trapped in the DiaphragmChamber at a point that allows theDiaphragm to remain lifted from thePRV-1 Seat to retain the down-stream “set pressure”.
• Should the downstream pressurestart to fall below the “set pressure”,the Pilot Valve Seat re-opens to al-low for a decrease in pressure in theDiaphragm Chamber to allow thePRV-1 to open further and then onceagain establish the downstream “setpressure”.
• When the downstream pressure is ator above the “set pressure” and as-suming there is a flow demanddownstream of the PRV-1, the PilotValve Seat is closed to trap a suffi-cient pressure in the DiaphragmChamber to allow the PRV-1 to re-main open to provide the “set pres-sure”.

— OPERATION —
DesignConsiderationsThe following items must be consid-ered and applied accordingly for aninstallation that will be using the ModelPRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve:
• The PRV-1 may be installed verti-cally or horizontally and in any orien-tation without affecting its operatingefficiency. When planning the posi-tioning of the PRV-1, it is recom-mended that consideration be givento the viewing of the pressuregauges. Consideration should alsobe given to positioning the PRV-1 sothat the diaphragm cover is facingup. With the cover facing up, internalaccess is more easily achieved.
• The PRV-1 must be in an area thatis easily accessible for maintenancepurposes, not subject to freezingtemperatures, and not subject tophysical damage.
• The valve is designed for fresh waterservice. When corrosive atmos-pheres and/or contaminated watersupplies are present, it is theowner’s responsibility to verify com-patibility with the pressure reducingvalve, pilot valve, and trim.
• The difference between the watersupply pressure and the desired out-let (downstream) pressure must be25 psi (1,7 bar) or greater per its FMApproval or 50 psi (3,4 bar) orgreater per its UL Listing. The differ-ential maintains accuracy control ofthe discharging pressure over thefull rated flowing range.
• Cavitation may occur when the inletpressure is greater than twice the“set pressure”. For this case, thepressure should be reduced in twosteps by using two PRV-1’s in se-ries.
• When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, a relief valve of not lessthan 1/2 inch (DN15) in size shall belocated downstream of the PRV-1.The relief valve shall be set at apressure equal to the lowest pres-sure rated component downstreamof the PRV-1. NOTE: FM Approval isbased on the use of the 1/2 inch,Watts Regulator, Series 530C Pres-sure Relief Valve.
• When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, a listed indicating valveshall be provided on the inlet side ofthe PRV-1.
• When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, means shall be pro-vided downstream of the PRV-1 to
facilitate a flow test at the sprinklersystem demand.
InstallationThe Tyco® Model PRV-1 Pressure Re-ducing Valve must be installed with theflow arrow located on the DiaphragmCover pointing in the intended direc-tion of flow. Installation dimensions areprovided in Figures 5 and 6.
Before the PRV-1 is installed, pipelines should be flushed of all chips, scale and foreign matter. Care must beexercised to assure that the trim is notdamaged during installation. Do NotLift The Valve By Its Trim.
NOTESThe inlet and outlet connections mustbe made based on the direction of flowarrow provided on the handhole cover. The valve cannot operate if connectedbackwards.
Do not alter the trim. Altering the trimmay render the valve ineffective andimpair the system operation.
Placing TheValve In ServiceSteps 1 through 12 are to be per-formed when placing the Model PRV-1Pressure Reducing Valve in service.
WARNINGDownstream pressure adjustmentis only to be performed by experi-enced personnel who understandthe impact of adjusting the down-stream pressure and who take fullresponsibility of the readjustmentfrom the factory setting. The PilotValve is provided with a Tamper Cap,which upon removal for purposes ofdownstream adjustment will providean indication that the PRV-1 may havebeen altered from the factory setting.
Adjustment of the Needle Valve isfactory set and must not be altered. The Needle Valve is provided with atamper indication, which upon removalfor purposes of any adjustment willprovide an indication that the PRV-1may have been altered from the fac-tory setting.
NOTESPer the requirements of NFPA 13, ameans shall be provided downstreamof the PRV-1 to simulate the sprinklersystem demand. In the case of hosestations, the opening of a hose valve
or multiple hose valves, as required, will be necessary to simulate hosestream demand.
For the purposes of the following in-struction, the opening of a “flow testvalve” simulates either the sprinklerdemand or hose stream demand, asapplicable. The sprinkler demand orhose stream demand must be at least50 GPM (190 LPM) for 2 to 6 inch(DN50 to DN150) valves and at least100 GPM (380 LPM) for 8 inch(DN200) valves.
There is no need to vent any trappedair from the Diaphragm Chamber.
Filling The System:
Step 1. Verify that downstream drainvalves are closed and that there are noleaks.
Step 2. Partially open a valve or valvesat the end of the system (e.g., an in-spector’s test connection on a wet pipesystem) to allow trapped air to escapewhen filling the system.
Step 3. Slowly and partially open thewater supply control valve feeding thePRV-1.
Step 4. After the system fills withwater, close the valve or valves thathad been partially opened in Step 2.
Step 5. Completely open the mainwater supply control valve feeding thePRV-1.
Downstream Pressure Adjustment:
Step 6. Remove the Tamper Cap fromthe Pilot Valve by first loosening its setscrew and then unscrewing the Tam-per Cap.
Step 7. Open the “flow test valve” tosimulate either the desired sprinklerdemand or hose stream demand.
NOTEIf surging flow occurs, attempt to bleedtrapped air from the system via theinspector’s test valve and any othervalve that can vent trapped air.
Step 8. Loosen the locknut on the ad-justing screw of the Pilot Valve.
Step 9. Turn the adjusting screwclockwise to increase outlet pressureor counterclockwise to decrease outletpressure.
Step 10. After achieving the desiredperformance, tighten the locknut onthe adjusting screw.
Step 11. Close the “flow test valve”.Observe the outlet pressure gaugeand compare to the required “setpressure”. If the required “set pres-sure” is not achieved, repeat Step 8and proceed accordingly.
Page 6 of 16 TFP1580
Step 12. Replace the Tamper Cap andtighten its set screw.
The pressure reducing valve is nowset for service.
NOTESDue to the spring tolerance within thePilot Valve, it may be necessary toalternate back and forth between re-sidual and static conditions to achievethe desired “set pressure” for both re-sidual and static conditions.
After any downstream pressure ad-justment, the following items are to berecorded on a tag attached to thevalve:
- Valve installation location
- Inlet static pressure
- Outlet static pressure
- Inlet residual pressure
- Outlet residual pressure
- Intended outlet flow
The tag is not to be removed until afterthe system has been accepted by theAuthority Having Jurisdiction. It is rec-ommended that the tag not be re-moved even after acceptance by theAuthority Having Jurisdiction unlessanother means of record keeping ismaintained.
Care andMaintenanceInspection, testing, and maintenancemust be performed in accordance withthe requirements of the NFPA, and anyimpairment must be immediately cor-rected.
The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of any authorities having ju-risdiction. The installing contractor orproduct manufacturer should be con-tacted relative to any questions.
Automatic sprinkler systems should beinspected, tested, and maintained by aqualified Inspection Service in accord-ance with local requirements and/ornational codes.
NOTEBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shut down theaffected fire protection systems must
first be obtained from the properauthorities and all personnel who maybe affected by this decision must benotified.
The Model PRV-1 Pressure ReducingValve requires no lubrication, packingor preventative maintenance; how-ever, replacement of the diaphragmevery five years is recommended.
Flow Tests. Flow tests per NFPA arerequired every five years, at whichpoint the outlet pressure is comparedto previous tests. If necessary thePRV-1 can be readjusted following thePlacing The Valve In Service section. If the desired pressure cannot beachieved, the Diaphragm and/or PilotValve should be replaced.
Diaphragm Replacement. Prior to re-placing the Diaphragm, the PRV-1must be taken out of service and com-pletely drained. With reference to Fig-ure 3, the Diaphragm Tab is orientedperpendicular to the outlet flow. Whenreinstalling the Diaphragm Cover, theDiaphragm Cover Fasteners must beuniformly and securely tightenedusing a cross-draw sequence. Aftertightening, double check to make cer-tain that all of the Diaphragm Coverfasteners are securely tightened.
Pilot Valve Replacement. Prior to re-moving the Pilot Valve, the PRV-1must be taken out of service and com-pletely drained. When installing the re-placement Pilot Valve, the trim compo-nents must be replaced exactly as theywere. After reinstalling the Pilot Valveand before returning the PRV-1 intoservice, completely unscrew the Ad-justing Stem of the replacement PilotValve so as to obtain a minimum outlet“set pressure”. Then proceed to usethe instructions under Placing TheValve In Service section to place thePRV-1 in service.
NOTESThe Pilot Valve is not field repairable.Attempting to repair the Pilot Valvemay render the valve ineffective andimpair the system operation.
Completely unscrewing the AdjustingStem of the replacement Pilot Valvewill help to avoid an accidental overpressurization of the system pipingprior to achieving the desired “setpressure”.
