Objectives

• Identify the document(s) that guide curriculum, instruction and assessment in the OACE ESL Program

• Identify how Standards are organized

• Identify how our Program has selected “key” or “essential” standards

• Practice using the ESL Standards

ESL Model Program Standards

• What was Adult Education ESL like before MS (1992)?

• How were ESL courses described?

What are the Model Standards?

• Identify core knowledge and skills (content standards)

• Identify performance indicators (performance standards)

How are they organized?

• Content Standards– 4 language skills: Listening, Speaking,

Reading, Writing– 7 proficiency levels

• Performance Standards– Sample assessment tasks

• 2 additional core content areas

• Section on integrating SCANS and EFF

What are Performance Standards?

Descriptive paragraph of how learner functions upon exit

Sample assessment tasks Examples of technology use how well learners need to perform to show

mastery

Power Standards

• In 2006 the ESL Program prioritized the standards, selecting 2 per skill area.

How do ESL teachers use the standards?

• What level?

• Should I promote him?

appropriately when asked familiar questions.

classmates and be promoted.

How do ESL teachers use the standards?

What do ESL Standards mean to students & teachers?

• For students:– What I must know, understand and be able to

do– What I need to do to demonstrate mastery– When I demonstrate mastery, where I will go

How do the standards contribute to improved student learning?

• What students need to know

• Helps teachers specifically target what ss need to learn

• Helps teachers gauge learner preparedness for the next level, or for exit
