INSTALLATION: If an older version of PDL Downloader is installed, it should be deleted via the “Add/Remove Programs” Control Panel prior to installing v3.2.1. PDL Downloader v3.2.1 and the associated drivers for the USB-Parallel Cable are posted on e-Support associated with this Technical Publication. The filename is PDLDL321.exe and it is a self-extracting archive. When this archive is expanded, it will create a PDLDL321 folder which contains two sub-folders – Driver and Install. The Driver folder will be discussed in a subsequent section. To install PDL Downloader v3.2.1, double click on the “setup.exe” file in the Install folder. The installation program is very simple – requiring only a choice for installation location. As this installer is based on Microsoft’s installer, it may update certain installer related files on the computer. If this occurs, it will require a reboot of the computer before the actual installation of PDL Downloader can be completed. USING PDL DOWNLOADER: PDL Downloader has a simple interface. This interface, pictured below, consists of four normal buttons and one “Radio type” button. The “Radio type” button selects whether a Standard Parallel Cable or a USB-Parallel Cable is being used. NOTE: ONLY the FY9-4154-000 USB-Parallel Cable may be used with PDL Downloader. No other USB-Parallel Cable will function with this software. Also, the driver for the USB-Parallel Cable needs to be installed – it is not necessarily a standard driver installation – refer to the Driver section of this Technical Publication. Additionally, converter cables other than FE1-5708-000 may or may NOT function – it is best to use FE1-5708-000 as this converter cable has been tested and is officially supported. The four normal buttons are Select (for selecting which file to flash), Download (to download the file to the controller), Cancel (to cancel a transfer) and End (to quit PDL Downloader).

USB-PARALLEL CABLE DRIVER INSTALLATION: This section will detail the driver installation for the USB-Parallel Cable for Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Each installation is a little different so follow the appropriate one for the computer being used. Note: Installation has not changed since v3.1.4.1, therefore screenshots have not been updated. Windows 98The driver files for the USB-Parallel Cable are included in the self-extracting archive named PDLDL321.exe. Extract these files to a location on the HDD of the computer – remember where the PDLDL321 folder is created as the driver files are located within the Driver folder in the Win98 folder. To install this driver so that the USB-Parallel Cable may be used, follow these directions:

1. Plug in the USB-Parallel Cable to the computer. Some dialogs will display showing that the computer recognizes the NetHawk USB-10 Cable and that USB Printing Support will be enabled (some names may be illegible). If this support had previously been enabled, the dialogs will not display.

2. If this is a new installation, the USB Printing Support will trigger the “Add New Hardware Wizard”. Click on Next and proceed to step 6.

3. If the “Add New Hardware Wizard” does not start, then there is most likely a USB Printing Support (name could be illegible) item under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” in the Device Manager. If that is the case, access the System Properties. This can be done by right-clicking on the My Computer icon or accessing the System Control Panel from Start Menu->Settings->Control Panel.
