MODELS OF TEACHING

• It is a process by which one person helps another to give knowledge skill and amart.

• Model is just a blueprint.• In educational field a model for teaching is just

a pattern or plan which can be taken up to shape a curriculum or course to select instructional material and to guide teachers action in the classroom

• It is a tentative theory of teaching.

Definitions

According to Joyce & Weil

“Teaching models are just instructional designs. They describe the process of specifying and producing environmental situations which cause the student to interact in such a way that specific change occurs in the behaviour”.

Definitions

According to Paul De Eggen et al defined: -

“Models are perspective strategies designed to accomplish particular instructional goals”.

In simple words a model of: -

teaching may be defined as a blueprint designed in advance & consist of guidelines to shape cause of study, educational activities, creating environment for learning and designing instructional materials to attain objectives or desired modification in behaviour

Assumptions of Model of Teaching

• Teaching is a mean of generating an environment for learning.

• Environment consists of content, skill, social relationships, instructional rules, activities and physical facilities etc.

• Different types of outcomes are achieved by organizing teaching elements accordingly.

• Learning outcomes can be can be classified in distinctive categories and each objectives can be achieved by generating specific situation.

Characteristics of Teaching Models

• Specification of learning outcomes.• Specification of environment .• Specification of criteria of performance.• Specification of operations• Specific procedures• Helpful in realization of objectives.• Answer to fundamental questions such as how a

teacher behaves etc• Qualitative development of teacher.

Fundamental Elements ofTeaching Models

• Focus : - It refers to goal or objectives of teaching. It describes the aspects of environment which are most important in the life of a student. The focus of teaching model is that for which it has been developed.

• Syntax: - It refers to description of model in action. It includes the sequence steps involved in the organization of complete program of teaching eg: how to begin what will come next.

Fundamental Elements ofTeaching Models

• Social System : - It refers to the relationship between students, teacher and environment of the classroom. The activities of the students and teachers and their mutual relationship are discussed in social system.

• Principle of Reaction: - It refers to the flexibility or rigidity of teachers reaction to the response of the students. It tells the teachers how to regard the learner and how to respond to what the learner does.

Fundamental Elements ofTeaching Models

• Support System : - it refers to additional supporting facilities to teachers and students & the evaluation techniques used to access the attainment of the objectives, special skill, special knowledge, teaching aids.

• Application Context: - It refers to feasibility of models used in varying context. It varies from knowledge.

Basic Teaching Model

• It was developed by Robert Glaser in 1962. he uses the psychological principles in teaching conditions to develop this model. It is termed as basic because he tries to explain the whole teaching process by dividing it into four basic components or parts: -

Basic Components or Parts

• Institutional Objectives.• Entering Behaviour• Instructional Procedures • Performance Assessment

All these basic components of teaching process interact and influence each other.

Q1 Advantages of multisensory instructions (5 marks)Q2 Elaborate the operations involved in pre-active stage of teaching (4 marks)

Q3 What is a language laboratory? How does it function? Discuss the ways it can be used for improving language pronunciation of students (16 marks)

Description of Glaser’s BasicTeaching Model

Glaser has described the models in terms of the fundamental elements.

• Focus: - It attempts to pinpoint the four basic components, the process and entire activities comprising of teaching learning process. The main aim of the model is to yield more and more quicker change in the behaviour of the student.

• Syntax: -Syntax of this model describes the model in action. The flow of activities is sequential. First of all objectives which are to be achieved are fixed, secondly the entire behaviour of the student or learner is assessed. Instructional work is carried out in the light of entering behaviour. Performance assessment is the last phase.

• Social System: - This model describes teacher dominated classroom. Thus the success of the model depends upon the ability and competency of the teacher in terms of various scales.

Principles of Reaction: -

• Principle of inter-dependence – Students response is to be understand dealt within the light of interaction and four stages interdependence.

• Principle of active involvement• Principle of follow up – Find out deficiencies

& correct the measures are employed.

Support System

• Availability of adequate pre-service and in-service facilities to teachers.

• Availability of desirable teaching-learning environment(Is the environment is condusive)

• Availability of desirable teaching aids.• Availability of appropriate evaluation

technique.

Application

This model is applicable to almost all teaching learning situations. It is applicable to wide variety of subjects and for all levels of students.

Role of Teaching Models

• It helps the teacher to develop his capacity to teach more children and create conducive environment.

• They are helpful for the teacher for planning and organizing teaching activities.

• The models are perceptive and goal specific.• It may help curriculum designers to plan

learning situation and curriculum which provide a variety of educational experiences to children.

Role of Teaching Models

• It helps to arrange support system• It provides motivation and arouses interests

among the students.• It helps in developing certain teaching aids.• They provide the knowledge of student

teacher interaction.• Teaching can be made more effective and

purposeful with the help of model.

Modifications of TeachingBehaviour

• Microteachings• Simulations

Simulations

• The literal meaning of the word simulation implies in act or role playing in which the process of teaching is enacted artificially and an effort is made to practice some important skill of communication through this.

• Cruisck Shank 1968 has developed this system of training and is known by several names as role playing, artificial teaching, pilot training, laboratory methods, clinical method and inductive scientific methods.

Simulations

• Simulation technique is to induced certain behaviour in an artificial situation. A student teacher has to play several roles as a teacher, student and a supervisor.

• According to Cruisck Shank 1968 “Simulation is the creation of realistic games to be played by participants in order to provide them with life like problem solving experiences related to their present or future works. ”

Simulations

• In simple words, simulation is a feedback technique used to induce certain behaviour in artificial situation. A pupil teacher in simulated social skill training has to play several roles as a teacher, student and as a supervisor.
