WelcomeWelcome to the 2016-17 season of artistic events at Bedford Modern School. The months ahead bring a packed programme of music, drama, dance, film and exhibitions featuring students from Years 3 to 13.

This Autumn the School is once again delighted to be hosting, and performing in, ACT! - a two night Drama Festival featuring schools from across the county. In November, students from Years 9 and 10 perform an Abridged version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream while Theatre In Transit, our Sixth Form Theatre Company, present a new production of Sophocles’ Antigone. Our youngest students will be displaying their musical skills in the Junior School Concert and their acting abilities in the annual Christmas Production. The traditional Christmas Concert and the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols end the term in festive style.

Open Mic Night and Dance! return at the beginning of 2017 followed by a spectacular staging of Jesus Christ Superstar in March. This production, showing over five nights, features students from Years 11 to 13 and promises to sell out fast so be sure to book early! March sees the School’s wind, brass and percussion ensembles showcased in Band Night while Film Night highlights the work of our Sixth Form Film Studies students.

The Summer Term sees the School Choir and orchestral musicians perform in the Classical Showcase whilst students from Years 7 to 10 present their production of the modern classic Thoroughly Modern Millie in May. Finally, to finish the year, don’t miss the Summer Concert or the Art Exhibitions from our GCSE and A Level students.

We look forward to seeing you and thank you for your continued support.

Theatre in Transit return to The Place with Sophocles’ Antigone. When Creon refuses one of her warring brothers proper burial rites, Antigone defies him and performs the ritual herself, setting her belief in the laws of the gods against the laws of man. Questioning honour, love, civil obedience, law and pride, Antigone asks us whether we would stand up against the state for what we believe.

Antigone features content that may be unsuitable for younger audiences.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classic rock-opera recounts the last week in the life of Jesus Christ from the surprising point of view of Christ’s betrayer, Judas Iscariot.

Judas has begun to believe that Jesus has sold out and started buying into the mythology that’s quickly springing up around him. Particularly disturbing to Judas is the relationship between Jesus and his friend Mary Magdalene. When Jesus has a disagreement with the moneylenders in a temple, Judas determines to work with the Pharisees who want to put Jesus on trial as a false prophet.

Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a young girl from Kansas, who comes to New York in search of a new life. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes awry when the owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East, her boss is slow in proposing marriage and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name... or so he tells her.

Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon lady of a villainess, this high-spirited musical romp is a delightful valentine to the long-standing spirit of New York City and the people who seek to discover themselves there.
