History of Interior and furniture design

From the early 1800s

• In Europe and America, a trend had started towards more freedom and eclecticism in interior design

•Over the next two centuries, a number of innovative and modern interior design styles would come and go into fashion including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, the minimalist look, and the industrial Bauhaus style

•Another 19th century trend was the popularization of interior design. While once reserved for royal palaces or the homes of wealthy citizens, interior design in the 1800s began to reach the masses.

•By the 20th century, the near-universal presence of home appliances such as stoves, washing machines, televisions, and telephones produced a new challenge for interior designers, who had to plan spaces not only for aesthetic purposes, but also for functionality

•Born from the Bauhaus and Art Deco streamline styles came the post WWII Modern style using materials developed during the war including laminated plywood, plastics and fibreglass.

. In modern furniture the dark gilded, carved wood and richly patterned fabrics gave way to the glittering simplicity and geometry of polished metal.

. The forms of modern furniture sought newness, originality, technical innovation, and ultimately conveyed the present and the future, rather than what had gone before it as revival styles had done

• Newness interest in new and innovative materials and methods produced a certain blending of the disciplines of technology and art.

•The use of new materials, such as steel in its many forms; molded plywood and plastics, were formative in the creation of these new designs.

•They were considered pioneering, even shocking at the time especially in contrast to what came before.
