At Newcastle you can study a striking range oflanguages, countries and cultures, in flexiblecombinations to match your interests.

This degree is the most flexible way of combining yourlanguages - you can study one, two or three languages.

You'll also spend a year abroad, immersed in the cultureand societies of the countries that fascinate you.

You will develop near-native fluency in your chosenlanguage(s) and gain an in-depth insight into the countrieswhere your languages are spoken.

We take a multidisciplinary approach to teaching, includingcinema, culture, history, politics, society, linguistics andliterature.

Languages availableOur Modern Languages degree is the most flexible way ofcombining your languages.

Your final degree can be in one, two or three languagesfrom a choice of:

• Chinese• French• German• Japanese• Portuguese• Spanish

The degree is designed for students with an A level (orequivalent) in one or more of the languages we teach,although you can also choose to study one language atbeginners’ level alongside your more advanced study.

See the Course Details section for more information abouthow you can combine your languages to tailor the degree toyour interests.

Year abroadAll of our modern languages degrees include a compulsoryyear abroad.

Students studying a European language can:

• study at one of our partner universities• undertake a work or voluntary placement• or do a combination of the above (ensuring that they do

not overlap)

Students of Chinese or Japanese spend the wholeacademic year studying at one of our partner universities inChina or Japan.

You usually divide the year between the two countriesrelating to your chosen languages, although it may bepossible to spend the whole year in one country.

If you are studying three languages we encourage you tospend some time during the summer vacation in the countryof your third language.

Support for year abroadWe offer lots of help to prepare you for your year abroad,including:

• briefings covering practicalities like insurance, visas andstudent safety

• support to find a work placement• a Tandem Learning Scheme, to practise conversation

in your foreign language and make contacts in thecountry before you travel

• a training course for language assistants

We also run social events for second-year students to meetfinalists who have already done their year abroad, Erasmusstudents from our partner universities in Europe, andChinese and Japanese exchange students from our hostuniversities in East Asia.

Our team of Year Abroad team will keep in close touch withyou while you are abroad. You will communicate regularlywith your personal tutor. You'll also complete blog poststhrough our e-portfolio system. This will help you reflect onyour linguistic, personal and professional development.

Facilities and supportYou will join the School of Modern Languages atNewcastle. We're a small and friendly School with around50 staff, 30 of whom are native speakers of the languagesthey teach. We have been teaching languages at Newcastlefor over 100 years. This mark of quality and heritage isreflected in the reputation that the School holds.

FacilitiesFacilities include state-of-the-art language laboratories andan award-winning Language Resource Centre, withself-study resources for over 50 languages. You'll also haveaccess to specialist language software, dictionaries, DVDs,films and live satellite TV channels.

Social activitiesThere are lots of opportunities within the School for you tomeet new people and get involved with different activities,including joining our student-run Modern LanguagesSociety.

Course Details

Modules for 2018 entry

Please noteThe module and/or programme information below isfor 2018 entry. Our teaching is informed by research andmodules change periodically to reflect developments inthe discipline, the requirements of external bodies andpartners, student feedback, or insufficient numbers ofstudents interested (in an optional module). To find outmore read our terms and conditions.Module/programme information for 2019 entry will bepublished here as soon as it is available (end of May2019).Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts foran academic year and you need to complete modulestotalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage. Furtherinformation, including the credit value of the module, isavailable in each of the module descriptions below.

Language combinations

Languages availableOur Modern Languages degree allows you to combine one,two or three languages from a choice of:

• Chinese• French• German• Japanese• Portuguese• Spanish

There are also additional optional beginners' modulesavailable in:

• Catalan, Quechua or Italian for students of Spanish• Catalan or Italian for students of French• Dutch for students of German

Combining your languagesIf you have one language at A level or equivalent:

• continue to study that language on its own (currently onlyavailable in French or German)

• study that language and add a second at beginners’ level

If you have two languages at A level or equivalent, youcan:

• continue to study both languages• study one of your A-level languages alongside a new

language at beginners’ level• study both of your A-level languages and add a third at

beginners’ level

• if you want to study one language only, it must be Frenchor German (at post-A level)

• you can't study Chinese and Japanese together• you can't study more than one beginners' language

Stage 1

For each language you are studying, you have:

• a weekly language class, normally taught in your chosenlanguage by native speakers

• a grammar lesson taught in English

Practical language classes focus on developing yourspeaking, reading, writing and listening skills throughsmall-group discussions.

You will also work in our state-of-the-art languagelaboratories where we have a wide range of audio-visualresources.

Optional modulesAs well as language modules, you select from a wide rangeof optional modules. Your choice depends on thelanguage(s) studied and level of study. You take at least onemodule and up to five modules, to bring your total to 120credits:

Teaching methodsThe majority of practical language modules are taughtthrough classes led by native speakers. You also work inlanguage laboratories and undertake self-study in our Language Resource Centre.

Assessment methodsAssessment involves oral and language laboratory work andwritten examinations at the end of each Stage, as well ascoursework submitted during the year.

During your year abroad in Stage 3 you are required tocomplete a personal learning record (a diary exerciseconsisting of three short pieces of work) and either write aproject in the relevant language or submit marks frommodules taken at the exchange university.

Entry Requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis.

If your qualifications are not listed here, please see ouradditional entry requirements web pages to find out whichother qualifications are considered.

The entrance requirements below apply to 2019 entry.Entrance requirements during Clearing 2018 may differfrom those outlined below.

A LevelsABB-BBB including French, German or Spanish.

Scottish QualificationsAABBB-BBBBB at Higher Grade, including French, Germanor Spanish. Combination of Highers and Advanced Highersaccepted.

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

International Baccalaureate32 points with Higher Level French or German or Spanish atgrade 6 or above.

Irish Leaving CertificateH1H1H2H2H3-H2H3H3H3H3 at Higher Level, includingFrench, German or Spanish.

Access QualificationsA minimum of 30 level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 level 3credits at Merit is required. Evidence of study in the relevantlanguages to a suitable level is also required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National ExtendedDiploma/OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3Extended DiplomaApplicants offering a BTEC National Diploma will beconsidered on an individual basis.

Cambridge Pre-UD3,M2,M2-M2,M2,M2 in Principal Subjects includingFrench, German or Spanish.

Extended Project QualificationWe welcome applications from students offering anExtended Project and value the skills of research andindependent learning that it is designed to develop.  If youoffer an Extended Project, it will be taken into account aspart of your application profile, but we will not usuallyinclude it in offer conditions for this degree programme.

Careers

Modern languages careersMost people study modern languages because of theirinterest and ability in the subject. For most graduatesteaching is a popular career choice, undertaking primaryand secondary Postgraduate Certificate of Education(PGCE) or beginning careers teaching English on aninternational basis. Others go into jobs in which theirlanguage skills are desirable, such as the media, sales,e-commerce, and areas of finance.
