Features and Benefits

MAC units are high thermodynamic engineering products, studied with accuracy in balancing compressors, condensers and evaporators in order to offer the best performances and wide safety margins. All the materials and equipments have been chosen without compromising the quality and life expectancy of the product.

Modular Design The McQuay’s modular chillers have been designed in such a way that different loads could be satisfied due to the combinations of these units. The largest combination is 6 modules of the same model (combinations of different models are not allowed). They are very convenient when transportation and installation become major issues.

Working Reliability Each module has two circuits, two compressors and one controller. As the capacity is increased by means of adding modules, the number of controllers, circuits and compressors are going to increase in the same way; resulting in a very reliable product.

Low Installation Cost The complete assembly of the units and function testing at the factory reduce the cost of installation on site. A rigid steel base with built-in access lifting points distributes the weight of the unit to the support points and allows simple installation. Also the possibility of transporting and lifting to the site each unit separately reduces the initial mechanical installation. These units modular design have the flexibility of future capacity increases, allowing accommodating the initial cost to the minimum demands requirements.

Low Operating Costs -- High Efficiency Operation The MAC chillers use Copeland scroll compressor design and large heat exchangers for maximum heat transfer. Generous heat transfer area translates into lower compressor pumping head and improved efficiency. In order to give optimum thermal insulation the complete heat exchanger is insulated with thermal closed cell nitric rubber foam.

Robust Cage Design These units are built with a very strong frame design allowing them to withstand the most severe weather adversities. Handling and installing these units become a simpler process due to the strong configuration of its components.

Factory Testing Each unit is pressure and vacuum tested, evacuated and charged with refrigerant. It is then run at the factory’s test bench under the possible application scenarios that the unit will be facing in real life. Before shipment, each unit is re-checked for pressure and refrigerant charge control.

General Specifications Compressor McQuay Modular Air Cooled Chillers are equipped with highly efficient Copeland’s Compliant Scroll compressors. These rugged hermetic compressors are constructed with an integral cast iron frame, cast iron

scrolls, three Teflon impregnated bearings, and three oil filtration devices for each compressor. Using

Copeland's Compliant Scroll compressors provides two to twelve steps of capacity modulation depending on

system load and number of modules. One through up to twelve compressors can run, depending on the load of

the system, resulting in excellent part-load efficiency. Each refrigerant circuit has specially designed oil and gas

equalization lines to control oil migration. The design also offers radial and axial compliance (no tip seals), a

large internal volume for liquid handling, a removable suction screen, and a rotary dirt trap and oil screen. In

addition, the compressor is self-compensating for wear, handles moderate liquid slugging, and inherently yields

the high efficiency. This well protected compressor includes a solid-state motor protection module, 4 individual

motor winding sensors, a patented internal discharge temperature probe, and a patented shutdown feature that

prevents reverse rotation. An internal discharge check valve helps prevent shutdown noise and comes standard

with high and low pressure taps with Schrader valves, a sight glass, an oil level adjustment valve, and an off

cycle crankcase heater. Units are available in 50 and 60 Hertz with voltage configurations from 208 to 460

volts, operating at 3550 RPM.

Air-cooled Condenser The two air cooled condenser coils with V-shaped consist of staggered rows of 3/8" OD seamless copper tube,

mechanically expanded onto die formed aluminum fins to ensure optimum heat exchange capability.

Condenser Fan Motor To achieve the high air charge requirement, the unit is equipped with the high air flow propeller fan which is

made of Galvanized steel. The fan is direct drive by weatherproof motor to ensure reliable continuous

operation.

Evaporator The heat exchanger is made of stainless steel plates closely arranged and brazed together to ensure high heat

exchange efficiency. The complete heat exchanger is insulated with thermal closed cell nitric rubber foam to

give optimum thermal insulation.

Refrigerant Circuit The refrigerant circuit is factory brazed and evacuated before accurately charged with R22 to ensure optimum

operating requirement. To ensure flawless continuous operation, each refrigerant circuit is equipped with a

carefully sized thermostatic expansion or capillary valve. See figure 1.

Control System Our Chiller Controller surpasses all other microprocessor-based chiller control systems available today. This powerful, user-friendly control panel can be hooked to a Smart Manager Controller to provide the flexibility and performance needed to operate or up to 50 chillers. The Smart Manager can be easily tied into a McQuay control system with the capability to handle up to 120 NIM compatible Fan-Coil units. The Chiller Controller’s state-of-the-art design will not only permit the chiller to run more efficiently, but will also simplify troubleshooting if a system failure occurs. Every Chiller Controller is programmed and tested prior to shipment to help provide a trouble-free start-up. Operator-friendly The Chiller Controller ҏmenu structure is separated into five distinct categories that provide the operator or service technician with a full description of current unit status, control parameters, and alarms. Security protection helps prevent unauthorized changing of the set-points and unit control parameters. The Chiller Controller continuously performs important self-diagnostic checks while monitoring system temperatures, pressures and protection devices. It wills automatically shutdown a compressor, a refrigerant circuit or the entire unit if a fault occurs. The cause of the shutdown will be retained in memory for operator review. The Chiller Controller can also retain and display the time the fault occurred and the operating conditions that were present at the time of the fault, which is an extremely useful feature for troubleshooting. In addition to displaying alarm diagnostics, the controller also provides the operator with a warning of pre-alarm conditions.

Controller Capabilities The Chiller Controler can switch to control/display the status of the Chiller.

Additional Safety Protection The modular air cooled chillers are equipped with intelligently designed safety control to ensure continuous safe

operation. High and low pressure switch is provided to prevent the compressor damage resulting from either

abnormally high discharge head pressure or low pressure. Differential pressure and paddle type flow switches

are also provided with the units. The standard controller provides accurate water temperature control in the

circuit by closely monitoring and reacting to the input from the water entering temperature, water leaving

temperature and ambient air temperature. During normal condition, if the water leaving temperature falls below

setting temperature (antifreeze temperature) the unit will be cut off automatically. Flow switch and Power

contactor with thermal relays for compressor, fan motor and water pump are providing secondary protection for

the unit. Each module is equipped with overload condenser fan motor protection and pump interlock input.

Location and Installation

Unit placement MAC units are for outdoor applications and can be mounted either on a roof or at ground level. Set units on a solid and level foundation. On roof-mounted applications, install the unit on a steel channel or I-beam frame to support the unit above the roof. On ground-level applications, install the unit on a substantial base that will not settle. A one-piece concrete slab with footings extended below the frost line is recommended. Be sure the foundation is level within 1/2"(13mm) over its length and width. The foundation must be strong enough to support the operating weights listed in Table 3. Standard wire-mesh coil guards protect the condenser coils. On ground-level applications, additional protection security can be achieved by erecting a screen fence. The fence must allow free flow of air to the condenser coil for proper unit operation.

Clearances The flow of air to and from the condenser coil must not be impeded. Restricting airflow or allowing air recirculation will result in a decrease in unit performance and efficiency because discharge pressures are increased. There must be no obstruction above the unit that would deflect discharge air downward where it could be re-circulated back to the inlet of the condenser coil. The condenser fans are propeller type and will not operate with ductwork on the fan outlet.

Figure 10, Clearances Sound Isolation The most effective isolation method is to locate the unit away from sound sensitive areas. Avoid locations beneath windows or between structures where normal operating sounds may be objectionable. Reduce structurally transmitted sound by isolating water lines, electrical conduit and the unit itself. Use wall sleeves and rubber isolated piping hangers to reduce transmission of water or pump noise into occupied spaces. Use flexible electrical conduit to isolate sound through electrical conduit. Spring isolators are effective in reducing the low amplitude sound generated by scroll compressors and for unit isolation in sound sensitive areas.

Space between units: 1.5m~3.0mm

Chilled Water Piping Flush the system water piping thoroughly before making connections to the unit evaporator. A strainer of 40 meshes must be installed in the return water line before the inlet to the chiller. Design the water piping so that the chilled water circulating pump discharges into the evaporator inlet. Connect the return water line to the evaporator inlet connection (top connection). Connect the supply water line to the evaporator outlet connection (bottom connection). Provide drain connections at low points in the system to permit complete drainage of the system. Locate air vents at the high points in the system to purge air out of the system. Purge air from the water system before unit start-up to provide adequate flow through the evaporator. Install pressure gauges in the inlet and outlet water lines to the evaporator. A single gauge shall be installed in a bypass line; measure pressure drop through the evaporator to calculate proper flow. Vibration eliminators are recommended in both the supply and return water lines. Insulate chilled water piping to reduce heat loss and prevent condensation. Thoroughly drain water from chillers not running in the winter to protect against freezing. If the chiller operates year round, or if the system is not drained for the winter, the chilled water piping exposed to outdoor temperature should be protected against freezing. Wrap the lines with a heater cable and add proper amount of glycol to the system to further protect the system during low ambient periods.

System Water Volume It is important to have adequate water volume in the system to provide an opportunity for the chiller to sense a load change, adjust to the change and stabilize. As the expected load change becomes more rapid, a greater water volume is needed. The system water volume is the total amount of water in the evaporator, air handling products and associated piping. If the water volume is too low, operational problems can occur, including rapid compressor cycling, rapid loading and unloading of compressors, erratic refrigerant flow in the chiller, improper motor cooling, shortened equipment life and other undesirable occurrences. For normal comfort cooling applications, where the cooling load changes relatively slowly, we recommend a minimum system volume of five minutes times the flow rate (GPM). For example, if the design chiller flow rate is 120 GPM, we recommend a minimum system volume of 600 gallons (120 GPM x 5 minutes). Since there are many other factors that can influence performance, systems may successfully operate below these suggestions. However, as the water volume decreases below these suggestions, the possibility of problems increases. It’s strongly recommended to install a water accumulator tank in the water piping system to compensate what is stated above.
