Objectives:

At the end of this lesson students are expected to:

• Discuss management relationship’s to other academic fields of study.

• Understand the nature and fundamental functions of management

• Be familiarize with other areas and fields of management

• Be aware of management’s relationship with other field of studies

• Realize the role of management in globalization and e-business.

• Describe the effects of globalization, workforce diversity, entrepreneurship, e-business, flexibility and innovation, quality management and learning organizations.

IntroductionWe have discussed in the

previous module-lesson the characteristics of the traditional and modern or new organizations. We have also tackled the reasons why people formed organizations. The next lessons that awaits all of us will focus on management in traditional or modern organizations.

Definition of ManagementWhat is Management? – Management is

a process of coordinating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people

Another definition: Management is the Scientific utilization of organizational resources to achieve or attain organizational objective which is optimum productivity.

Elements of definition:• Process - represents ongoing functions or primary

activities engaged in by managers• Coordinating - distinguishes a managerial position

from a non-managerial one• Efficiency - getting the most output from the least

amount of inputs • “doing things right” concerned with means• Effectiveness - completing activities so that

organizational goals are attained• “doing the right things” concerned with ends

The Fundamental Functions of Management

• Planning - defining goals, establishing strategies for achieving goals, and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities

• Organizing - determining tasks to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are made

• Leading - directing and motivating all involved parties and dealing with employee behavior issues

• Controlling - monitoring activities to ensure that they are going as planned

Students will download from the internet one example of a traditional type of an organization and one modern or new type of an organization. Selected students will present their report or assignment in the class. The facilitator will also include his/her own example which he downloaded from the internet to strengthen the concepts and knowledge of the students about these types of organizations.

Looking Back (the final test) Review Questions: (10 points each)

(Answer the following questions in two and three paragraphs by citing examples based in real life situation. Write your answer in the box provided below. You may use separatepaper if necessary.)

• Cite a particular instance that you were able to apply any of the fundamental functions of management.

• Assuming, you were asked by your friend who is working in his family owned business to help him in coming up with a good scheme in managing the different personalities in the organization. How and what functions of management you are going to apply? Discuss comprehensively your answer.
