Introduction Module 5: GemStall Overview Introduction Page With Picture: Use Arial, 125 pt for title, Use Arial, 100 pt for introduction. This page will again display the title as well as give an introduction to the presentation. A good way to do this is to give an example of why the subject is important, what’s in it for the student. Let’s say the training module is how to program the date and time on the terminal. An introduction could be: Jane is the manager of a convenience store. She has noticed on her receipts the time is incorrect. She needs to know how to update the time in her terminal. As a VeriFone Authorized Service Contractor you will be working with several major oil software applications. These software applications will be downloaded into the VeriFone POS terminals. The software will need to be downloaded for new installations, when software upgrades are mandated by the major oil, and when a main board needs to be replaced on the terminal.

Gemstall is an MS-DOS utility program used to download software applications on a VeriFone POS terminal. As a VASC technician, Gemstall allows you to:

Install an application into a Ruby terminal.

Edit and upgrade the parameters for site-specific requirements (i.e. dispenser type, DCR keypad, etc.).

Backup and restore specific data from a Ruby terminal.

Reprint the installation and upgrade information from a Ruby terminal.

EditYou will use Edit to select specific parameters for the site you will be installing.

For example, if the site will be using a 120-key keyboard, you would need to select the 120 key in the edits.

The edits include all the peripherals to be interfaced with the VeriFone POS terminal, such as the printer, scanner, fuel, and dcr’s.

InstallThe Install feature will actually start the process of loading the software into the Ruby terminal.

UpgradeUpgrade can be used should you need to add, change, or delete a few files on the Ruby terminal.

For example, if the site was installed without a scanner and then 6 months later the site decides to use scanners, you would need to upgrade the site to include scanner functionality. Providing the site has the most current software in production, as a VASC you would use the Upgrade functionality to download the scanner file into the POS terminal(s).

BackupWhen a backup is used in GemStall, specific files on the Ruby terminal will be downloaded onto a floppy disk.

The files that will be backed up are specific to the major oil. In most cases this back up does not include fuel configuration.

To use this functionality you must have a floppy disk drive. Using GemStall to back up files is only one of many ways to accomplish this.

Should you not have a floppy disk drive on your service laptop you will be able to use a different backup method.

FunctionalityModule 5: GemStall Overview

Page 12: Module 5 GemStall Overview

RestoreThe Restore feature will be used to restore specific files that were originally backed up on a floppy disk.

These files will be downloaded into the Ruby terminal.

OptionsUnder the Options feature you will find the option to Reprint your installation report, change a comport, and clear an error message.

When using GemStall you will be connecting your laptop to the Ruby terminal.  There are two versions of GemStall – version 2.11 and version 2.52.

The version you will use is dependant on your laptop.

Differences Betweenv2.11 and v2.52

Module 5: GemStall Overview

Page 15: Module 5 GemStall Overview

If your laptop does not have a male 9-pin serial connection and you wish to use a USB converter you must use GemStall version 2.52.

In order to download software there will be a serial connection between your laptop and the Ruby terminal.

If your laptop does not have a male 9-pin serial connection you will need to use an alternate solution. One solution is an USB to 9-pin converter. These converters are only supported with GemStall version 2.52.

Page 16: Module 5 GemStall Overview

There are a few alternatives to a 9-pin serial connection, including the following:

• USB to Serial Converter• PCMIA Serial Card• Express Card

If you opt for an USB to Serial Converter you MUST install GemStall version 2.52.

Page 17: Module 5 GemStall Overview

If your laptop has Windows 2000 or XP, and you will be using a serial connection you can use either GemStall version.

However, you will find version 2.11 will download software faster than version 2.52. For this reason many technicians prefer GemStall version 2.11.

Prior to attending Ruby VASC School please ensure you have installed the correct version of GemStall on the laptop you will be using in school.

VeriFone applications will be downloaded from the VeriFone premier portal website. When downloading applications there is a self-extracting file that is included in this download.

The self-extracting file will attempt to locate GemStall on your hard drive.

For this reason you should install GemStall in the root C directory. If you use another location to store GemStall the self-extracting file will not work and you will manually need to set up your file structure.

From the C Directory make a folder and call it GemStall.

Open up your C:\GemStall directory.

If you selected GemStall v2.11 simply double click the GemStall.exe file.

If you selected GemStall v2.52, you will double click the WinZip file and WinZip will launch indicating the files will extract to a specific directory on your laptop. We recommend you extract to the C:\GemStall directory.

Installing GemStallModule 5: GemStall Overview

Page 25: Module 5 GemStall Overview

Once the files have been extracted and installed locate the directory c:\gemstall you will notice there are two different executables located there.

One is Gemstall-usb.exe and the other is Gemstall.exe.

Both of the executables will work for a standard Serial connection (RS232) or if you are using a USB-Serial converter providing the comport on your laptop for the connection has been assigned to ports 1-4.

Installing GemStallModule 5: GemStall Overview

Page 26: Module 5 GemStall Overview

If you are using a USB-Serial converter and the comport on your laptop for the connection is a port other than 1-4 then you must use the Gemstall-usb.exe executable.

When installing this executable it will ask you to enter the comport number on your laptop assigned for the USB-Serial connection.
