Mr. Ravi Chandra Gurung

Module aims The module aims:

1. To provide a firm understanding of networking terminology, models and mathematics.

2. To introduce students to copper, optical, and wireless networking media.

3. Practical experience on cable testing and cabling LANs and WANs

4. Understanding of Ethernet operation and 10/100/1000/10Gigabit versions of Ethernet.

Module aims… The module aims:

5. To introduce concepts of Ethernet switching. 6. To enable students to perform subnetting of IP

addresses. The module contributes towards the subject IT.

Module outcomes after successful completion You will be able to:1. Describe and classify computer networks and

appreciate networking protocols and its importance in networking .

2. Explain some of the most common internetworking components.

3. Describe the Open System Interconnection (OSI) reference model and the communication process between different layers of the OSI reference model.

Module outcomes after successful completion… You will be able to:4. Explain the different addressing schemes in

computer networking. 5. Identify, make and test different network cables .

Module Assessments• Assessments:

50% Exam 50% Practical Test

Tutorials are related to the Lectures/practical and Examinations.

Workshops are related to the Practical Assignment.

Note:- Students should obtain 40% pass on aggregate from examination and coursework.

Objectives• Describe how networks impact our daily lives.• Describe the role of data networking in the human

network.• Identify the key components of any data network.• Identify the opportunities and challenges posed by

converged networks.• Describe the characteristics of network

architectures: fault tolerance, scalability, quality of service and security.

• Install and use IRC(Internet Relay Chat) clients and a Wiki server.

How Networks Impact Daily Life

• Explain the benefits of instantaneous communication and how it supports and improves our lives.

How Networks Impact Daily Life• Describe the characteristics and purpose of

popular communication media such as, IM, Wikis , Blogs, Podcasting, and Collaboration Tools– Instant messaging

• Real time communication • between 2 or more • people based on typed text

Data Networking Role, Components, and Challenges

• Basic characteristics of communication– Rules or agreements are first established– Important information may need to be repeated– Various modes of communication may impact

the effectiveness of getting the message across.

Data Networking Role, Components, and Challenges

• Describe the role of data networking in communications

Data Networking Role, Components, and Challenges• Describe the various

elements that make up a network– Devices

• These are used to communicate with one another

– Medium• This is how the

devices are connected together

– Messages• Information that

travels over the medium

– Rules• Governs how

messages flow across network

Data Networking Role, Components, and Challenges
