Clinical Breast Examination and Communication Skills

16th and 17th October 2018

This module is two days plus one additional day for a practical session in the breast symptomatic clinic. The module is designed for clinicians and advanced practitioners working in the clinical area of breast diagnosis. It will provide the range of clinical skills necessary for good practice and de-velop the students ability to communicate effectively with patients in their care.

Learning objectives:

At the end of this module the student will be able to:

Evidence a high level knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the breast

Evaluate and clinically examine a patient (female or male) presenting to a breast unit

Be able to synthesise information and produce a comprehensive report on a clinical breast examination, using “1-5” classification, according ‘best practise clinical guide-lines’

Engage in sound clinical reasoning and effective decision making, resulting in appro-priate actions for further clinical intervention

Demonstrate effective communication to minimise the distress of patients attending a breast unit

Elicit record and assess the relevance of a patients clinical history and identify those aspects with the potential to impact on patient outcome

Module Information

Entry requirements Students should normally be registered Practitioners working in areas where they can obtain appropriate practical experience. The

employing department is required to undertake support of the

student’s development, by facilitating sufficient access to practice and providing a suitable mentor.

Post-registration Scheme This is a 20 credit module within the Pg Breast Imaging Pathway. Further modules are offered to enable students to attain a Postgraduate Diploma in Breast Imaging: Mammography theory, Mammography practice, Mammography Image Interpretation and Reporting, Breast Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided Interventional Procedures. This 20 credit module provides the range of communication skills and clini-cal development required for clinicians and advanced practitioners working within a clinical breast environment. This will enable participants to develop a specific knowledge base and skills set in clinical breast examination. The student will be able to understand the importance of taking a comprehensive clinical history and understand the communication needs of the patient . This module represents an important role development in this area and

facilitates elements of advance practice in breast imaging and breast care. The duration of the course is approximately 6 months.

The module is kept under constant review to ensure current learning needs are met. A detailed module guide is provided to students at the commence-ment of the course.

The module requires a 2 day attendance at King’s College Hospital group and an elective day within King’s symptomatic breast clinic. The module re-quires 200 study hours, 150 hours are student managed learning hours.

Assessment:

Portfolio

A record of clinical experience with a minimum of 50 cases presenting to both symptomatic and screening assessment clinics

An appropriate range of normal variation and disease must be included

25 cases described in detail including triple assessment and results and

reflections on communication strategies

Clinical assessment of student by the training centre for at least 5 examina-tions (OSCE)

Written assignment

To evaluate and analyse how the student would respond to a set of clinical scenarios. The student is required to choose three out of four options,

1000 words each .
