What is Planning & what is Project Planning?

• Planning is a “Map into the Future”.

Growth of Planning

• With the technological advancement, as we became more skilled tomonitor and control various aspects of projects, we needed tools &manpower to handle those tools in order to ensure deliveryexpectations are met.

• The last three decades has seen large projects being undertakenworldwide in the engineering, construction, mining, oil & gas, IT andother industries which demanded planning on large scale. Hence theprofession of Planning Engineering as an offshoot of ProjectManagement has evolved and has become an indispensable requisitefor successful delivery of projects meeting their objectives.

What is Billing and what is Costing?

• Billing is the total amount of the cost of goods or servicesbilled(invoiced) to a customer usually covering purchases made orservices rendered within a specified period of time

• Costing is the act of calculating the cost of goods or services inadvance and is often generally referred as Estimating.

• “Costing” precedes “Billing” and go hand in hand with Planning andconstitute what is commonly referred as “Project Controls” or“Project Services” and form part of the “Project ManagementProcess”.

Forensic Planning and Claims

• Claims are essentially built on “As Built” compared with “Baseline” or Contract Programs.

• Claims can be generated at any point of time depending on the circumstances giving rise to claims.

• Analysis of claims in the light of Planning or program once the project has been completed is known as Forensic Planning.

• Tracking or comparing the Baseline vs. Actual Programs helps the Forensic Planning process so it is important that program files be archived in a methodical manner.
