Preamble

The Master’s program "Master of English & American Studies / English Linguistics" deals on an

advanced level with current research approaches, theories and methods in the field of English

linguistics, literature and cultural studies. The program offers students a general overview of recent

approaches and methods in the research field, which is then deepened in a specialization chosen in

the fields of "English Linguistics" or "English & American Studies".

The specialization in "English Linguistics" (EL) will be carried out in the advanced modules concerning

linguistic theory as well as empirical methods in the core grammatical areas, which are represented

by the lecturers at the institute. At present, the focus is on phonology, syntax, semantics and

psycholinguistics. Phenomena from the English language naturally form a focus in empirical analysis,

but the analysis of structures of the English language always also takes place in a comparative

perspective. A specialization module and the participation in research colloquia, which discuss

ongoing research in the focal area, prepare directly for the Master thesis.

The emphasis in the field of "English & American Studies" (EAS) will be in the areas of English and

American literatures and cultures, with a particular focus on current methodological and theoretical

debates in the respective disciplines. In addition to more traditional texts in English and American

literary history, the emphasis lies on current research areas, such as the Digital Humanities, post-

colonial studies as well as interdisciplinary literature and cultural studies in the modules of the MA

"English & American Studies". A specialization module as well as participation in colloquia, in which

current research projects in the focal area are regularly presented and discussed, prepare students

directly for the Master thesis.

In addition to these modules, which are anchored in the individual focus areas, students further

develop their oral and written skills in the English language in a language practice module. In project

work, the acquired knowledge and skills in the fields of "English Linguistics" or "English & American

Studies" are applied beyond the courses offered, either through an internship or through (active)

conference participation or a similar activity. An interdisciplinary module complements the subject-

specific training in order to establish links to neighbouring disciplines. The Master thesis makes an

independent scientific contribution to English Linguistics or English & American Studies, respectively.

Goals of Qualification

In addition to offering a continuing practical language training and a deep insight into the methods of

this field, the MA "English & American Studies / English Linguistics" allows students to specialize

either in literary and cultural studies or in linguistics.

Towards the end of the MA program, students will pursue their own research interests and design

and carry out original and persuasive research in an MA thesis.

Graduates of the Master’s program "English & American Studies / English Linguistics"

- have in-depth knowledge of either linguistic or textual analysis,

- have designed and carried out original and persuasive research in an MA thesis,

- have an in-depth understanding of interdisciplinary contexts in English / American Studies and

further literary and cultural studies,

- are specialized in either linguistic or literary and cultural theory,

- have advanced language skills, both verbally and in writing,

- are well-versed in intercultural reflection on either a linguistic or a textual basis.

Besides careers in research, academia, and Higher Education, areas of employment of graduates

include the media (publishing, print, radio, television etc.), foundations, especially in the area of

cultural management, or the economy, e.g. in Corporate Communication, Marketing and Advertising,

Human Resource or Change Management and Consulting. English graduates are qualified for careers

in these areas due to core competencies acquired in their MA-studies, such as in-depth skills in

research, presentation and critical analysis, understanding of complexity, intercultural

communication, and project management, in addition to skills learned during an internship.

Students obtain specialized knowledge in postcolonial and transcultural theory

and explore the various functions of literary texts as (literary and cultural)

contact zones. They familiarize themselves with postcolonial literatures and

cultures (e.g. literatures from India, the African continent, the Caribbean,

Australia, and New Zealand), migrant fiction, and/or with multi-ethnic literatures

and cultures from the United States. They develop conceptual frameworks for

comparative studies in transcultural encounters in different literary genres both

within and across different periods.
