Introduction

Scharlau high purity chemicals are serving analysts since 1949. During these 60 years, the Scharlau product families have been growing to become a comprehensive source of chemicals for industrial laboratories as well as research centers.Although the Scharlau program has always included some products for biochemistry, this new Molecular Biology Catalogue represents a serious commitment to expand our products and services to the life sciences and bioseparation fields.

In this catalogue you will find more than 70 chemicals used in every molecular biology laboratory. Electrophoresis buffers, enzyme substrates, agaroses, chemicals used in DNA /RNA extraction and other general reagents. Most of them are offered in specific qualities for biochemical and molecular biology applications.

All of our molecular biology products are manufactured under ISO 9002 and submitted to strict and specialized quality control analyses that guarantee its use in molecular biology experiments. We pay special attention to purity, low UV absorption and absence of enzymes that could damage nucleic acids or proteins (DNases, RNases and proteases).

We have included the new classification of substances and mixtures according to the new GHS regulations. As a result, new pictograms, hazard statements as well as precautionary statements are associated to every product.

We hope you will find this catalogue useful for your daily work. As always, we will remain open to any suggestion to improve our range of products and services.

Biological buffers

These buffer substances are soluble in water and aqueous matrixes. Their best buffering capacity is in the pH range 6 to 9.When selecting a buffer it is recommended to follow these guidelines:1. pKa of the buffer substance must be close to the working pH,

because a buffer has 90% of its buffering capacity within 1 pH unit of its pKa.2. Although temperature changes have low effects on the pH value,

it is advisable to prepare the buffer solution at the same temperature that it will be used.

3. Always prepare the buffer solution at the needed concentration. Avoid dilu-tion errors.

Acrylamide is a potent neurotoxin and it is absorbed through the skin. The effects of acrylamide are cumulative. Wear

gloves made of latex or vinyl and a mask when weighing powdered acrylamide and methylenebisacrilamide. Also

wear gloves when handling solutions containing these chemicals.

Although polyacrylamide is considered to be nontoxic, it should be handled with care because of the possibility that

it might contain small quantities of unpolymerized acrylamide.

If precautions are taken, dangerous substances can be handled safely.
