WHY DO WE NEED OXYGEN TO SURVIVE?
Important component of the
respiration reaction that
occurs in all cells.
OUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
• NOSE
• WINDPIPE
• AIR TUBES
• LUNGS
• AIR SACS
FURTHER INFORMATION
• NOSE, WHEN WE BREATHE IN, AIR RUSHES INTO OUR BODY THROUGH
OUR NOSE AND AIR WILL CLEANED, WARMED, AND MOISTENED.
• WINDPIPE, THE AIR THEN MOVES DOWN OUR WINDPIPE.
• AIR TUBES, THE WINDPIPE BRANCHES TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT INTO
SMALLER AIR TUBES.
• LUNGS, EACH OF THIS AIR TUBES LEADS TO ONE OF OUR LUNGS AND
BRANCH WITH AIR SACS.
• AIR SACS, FOR GAS EXCHANGE.
BREATHE IN AND BREATHE OUT
Breathe in
Our ribcage moves outwards
and upwards. This causes the
space in our chest to become
bigger and air rich in oxygen
is drawn into our lungs.
Breathe out
Our ribcage moves inwards
and downwards. This causes
the space in our chest to
become smaller and air rich in
carbondioxide is forced out of
our lungs.

WONDERFUL LUNGS
• LUNGS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ORGAN IN OUR RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM.
• ALMOST THE PROCESS OF THE
GAS EXCHANGE OCCUR IN OUR
LUNGS.
WHAT HAPPEN WHEN OUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM FAILS TO WORK
PROPERLY?
• MICRO-ORGANISM AND POLLUTANTS
• MAY CAUSE SOME DISEASES LIKE:
• ASTHMA
• BRONCHITIS
• EMPHYSEMA
• LUNG CANCER
• TUBERCULOSIS
Asthma: caused by
an allergy –
breathlessness or
gasping for air may
occur during an
asthma attack.
Emphysema –
Enlargement of
air sacs in the
lungs and caused
by smoking.
Bronchitis – an inflammation of the windpipe
and the two main air tubes that lead to the
lungs.
Lung Cancer – when
cells in the lungs
grow and multiply
without control and
abnormally forming
a tumour
