Developing Young Readers: Strategies and Technology Tools (M03) Teaching a child to read is one of the greatest educational gifts a parent can give a child. Research shows that what children learn before they enter kindergarten is very closely related to how easily they learn to read later on, therefore it is important that parents help their children establish foundational reading skills and positive reading habits early on. In this workshop, mothers of young children will:

• Learn research on the importance of reading with children during their nursery years. • Practice tips and tricks for developing reading skills and positive reading experiences with young children both on and

offline. • Discover resources on the Internet that parents and caregivers can use with young children to develop literacy skills

and a love of reading. This workshop is offered twice. Participants should select one of the following dates to attend:

• November 25, 2009 (Wednesday), 9am-12pm • December 13, 2009 (Sunday), 9am-12pm

Digital Literacy and Cyber Safety: What Kids and Parents Need to Know (M04) In an age when new technologies are born by the second and children are spending more and more time online, it is critical that they and you know how to interact safely, meaningfully and productively online. In this workshop moms will:

• Learn international standards and best practices around what children should know and be able to do online. • Discuss cyber safety tips for children and adults. • Learn how to gauge the credibility of websites. • Discover resources aimed at helping children and adults build digital literacy skills.

This workshop is offered twice. Participants should select one of the following dates to attend:

• December 8, 2009 (Tuesday), 9am-12pm • December 16, 2009 (Wednesday), 9am-12pm
