THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is on
the National Register of HistoricPlaces, has had many incarnationsover the years. The property was pur-chased by the Tyler family in the early’20s. After Alice Tyler was left awidow with three young children, sheran the property as a summer campfor girls. When the depression hit,she decided to create jobs and pro-vide a future for her children by turn-ing the barn into a theatre. This yearmarks the 80th anniversary ofTheatre By The Sea. The 300-seattheatre opened on August 7, 1933with a production called StrictlyDynamite. That initial season lastedfour weeks and featured four differentplays, one of which was taken toNew York. In 1938, a YaleCooperative took over. Then, onSeptember 2, a hurricane hit. Theback wall of the theatre caved in andthe stage roof was blown off. Duringthe repairs, the theater was expand-ed to include a balcony. The newlyenlarged theatre operated through1941 and then went dark during thewar. In 1946, the theatre’s most glam-orous and star-filled period began. The theatre became what is referredto as a “star-system” house openingwith a show called Dream Girl whichstarred Judy Holliday. Other headlin-ers who were brought in were TallulahBankhead, Mae West, Groucho Marx
and Marlon Brando. Following the1958 season, the property was soldto the Bontecou family, who leased itsporadically for several years, and by1966 there were plans to tear downthe theatre. Upon hearing that thetheatre was to be destroyed, TommyBrent, who had previously worked asa publicist for the theatre, returnedand saved the theater from demoli-tion. His first show opened on June23, 1967 and he ran the theatre suc-cessfully for twenty two years. In1988, FourQuest Entertainment, which consisted of Laura Harris,(who had previously worked at thetheatre for 11 summers), Renny Serreand Richard Ericson, came on board.Following extensive renovations,FourQuest reopened the theater inthe spring of 1989 and continuedproducing high quality summer the-ater in Matunuck until the fall of 2003.The theatre went dark once againuntil 2007, when entrepreneur BillHanney purchased the property and, with producing partners, successfullymounted a production of ‘A FunnyThing Happened on the Way to theForum,’ just six weeks later, reopen-ing the historic theatre on August 8,2007. Theatre By The Sea continuesto annually produce a successfulfour-musical subscription season.
