UWI Vincent HoSang Venture Competition 2016 Launched
The 2016 staging of the Vincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) was launched onWednesday, September 14, 2016 at Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM). Theprogramme now in its 14th year is designed to encourage members of the University community touse their talents and skills to harness ideas that can be grown into fullfledged operating businesses.

5th Annual Developing theCaribbean Conference andCode Sprint DevCa 2016
The region could earn in excess of US$272million dollars through the ongoing releaseof open data. This was revealed during the5th annual Developing the CaribbeanConference and Codesprint (DevCa) the4th staging of the initiative by Mona Schoolof Business and Management and theSlashroots Foundation from May 56, 2016at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
PitchIT Caribbean TechEntrepreneurship Competition
Local mobile app developers SameLogicand Bookfusion were among the five teamswhich scored big at the Caribbean MobileInnovation Project’s (CMIP) PitchITCaribbean techentrepreneurshipcompetition hosted June 34, 2016. Theproject, which is part of theEntrepreneurship Programme for Innovationin the Caribbean (EPIC), was executed bythe CMIP Consortium of which Mona Schoolof Business and Management is a memberrepresented by Craig Perue, ProjectManager Training and Dr. MauriceMcNaughton, Director, Centre of Excellence.
Caribbean Youth #HackZika
With a call for all sections of society to jointhe fight against the Zika Virus and othervector borne diseases, and following thelaunch of Jamaica’s open data portal, localCivic Tech Organization, SlashrootsFoundation in collaboration with theCaribbean Open Institute, Mona School ofBusiness Management, the Ministry ofHealth and other international partnershosted a successful Zika Hackathon fromJune 2526 in Kingston, Jamaica.
TSL/MSBM Public Forum onExports
June 29th saw the staging of a public forumentitled “Achieving Prosperity ThroughExportLed Growth” jointly hosted byTechnological Solutions Limited and MonaSchool of Business Management. The eventwhich was held at The Faculty of Law UWIMona was aimed at exploring theimportance of exports to the survival ofJamaica’s economy and saw experts in thefield of business, marketing, science andtechnology sharing their knowledge on thesubject.

MSBM Executive Seminar: “BigData and BusinessIntelligence”
The first seminar in the MSBM Policy,Governance & Regulatory (PGR)programme series entitled: “Big data andbusiness intelligence: What your boardneeds to know” was held on April 9, 2016 inthe Council Room of the UWI RegionalHeadquarters. The seminar saw over 20participants, from both private and publicsector entities including Lasco FinancialServices, JMMB, DBJ, VMBS and NHT,participating in a 3hour interactive andinsightful conversation to gain a clearerappreciation for why Big Data is not just thelatest technology hype, but a strategicimperative for business.

August Town 178th CelebrationCommunity Tour
Mona School of Business and Managementlaunched a new mobile application aimed atboosting community tourism in August Townlocated in Kingston. The app was launchedsimultaneously with a tour on August 31,2016 during the 178th Celebration of theestablishment of August Town. It connects tothe August Town map, points of interest andtour route in OpenStreetMaps, to provide avirtual tour companion to the physicalAugust Town Tour. The mobile App is onedemonstration of how the digital assetscreated by interactive community mappingand Open geoData can enhance communitytourism products and services.
Advocacy & Outreach
MSBM Outreach Day 2016
The School embarked on its major outreach initiative dubbed “MSBM Outreach Day” on April 21,2016 at the Fort George Early Childhood Institute, Fort George, Annotto Bay, St Mary. MSBM staff fromboth the Mona and Western Jamaica campuses turned out in support of the initiative. The school’sstaff members and friends donated: educational toys and school supplies; educational devices;utensils and small appliances for use in the preparation of meals for the children; toiletries; an 800gallon water tank, paint, painting supplies, and a face basin. There was a formal handover of thegifts to the School’s Principal Mrs. Barbara Bhansi. Staff members engaged in a work day andpainted the classrooms, erected the water tank with assistance from members of the UWI
Maintenance Department and provided early learning stimulation to the students through organizedgames and reading.

Three UWI Teams Win Top Awards at National Business ModelCompetition
The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) copped second, third and fourth place awards in the3rd annual National Business Model Competition (NBMC), with three out of its four studententrepreneur teams securing a combined cash prize of J$1.75 million. Mona School of Business andManagement, with the support of the Faculty of Science and Technology, led the coordination ofUWI’s participation in the competition, providing the teams with mentorship, training and support.

MSBM Seminar: “Strategies forTest Taking”
MSBM’s Student Engagement andEnrichment (SEE) Committee held anexamination preparation seminar entitled“Strategies for Test Taking” on April 7, 2016at the UWI Mona Campus. Fiftyninestudents benefited from the session whichprovided them with techniques to, amongother things: manage the stress andpressures of upcoming final examinations;and answer questions true and false,multiplechoice, short answer and essay.
MSBM welcomes over 1300new students
The period July 21st August 31st sawMona School of Business and Managementopening its doors to over 200 post graduatestudents and 1100 undergraduates.Students were engaged in a range oforientation, team building and academicadvising activities. Notably, the new MBACohort will be the first to experience therevised programme following a revision ofthe curriculum which is now offered on a16 month accelerated track or 24 monthregular track featuring several new coursesand a compulsory field project. MSBMproudly welcomes all its new students andwishes them well.

Keisha Forbes: JMMB's Ball OfFire
Who would believe that a good ol' countrygirl could conquer and be a major influencein a maledominated industry? From ridingbicycles, climbing trees and spending daysat the beach, Keisha Forbes had bigdreams, but copping the position of chiefexecutive officer of Jamaica Money MarketBrokers (JMMB) Limited was not one ofthem. MSBM alum Forbes has an MBA witha specialization in Banking and Finance.

The aim of theseminar was to promote opportunities andcareers that can be pursued at the OUR andother agencies in the field on ICT by youngwomen.

Dr. Maurice McNaughton, Director of theCentre of Excellence at MSBM, participatedas a conference speaker at SuperweekJamaica 2016 – a Data AnalyticsConference themed “Analytics You Will Live”held May 2016. Dr. McNaughton’spresentation entitled, “Agile BI in HigherEducation: A Case Study from the Universityof the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica”described an “Agile Approach to StrategicBusiness Intelligence" currently beingimplemented at UWI that includes theapplication of an Information MaturityAssessment instrument that enabled therapid development of a strategic BIRoadmap and proof of concept AnalyticsApplications for the Institution.

MSBM’s Prof. Densil Williamscontributes at PSOJ AnnualEconomic Forum
Professor Densil Williams, ExecutiveDirector of MSBM, made his contributionalongside four other presenters at the tenthannual PSOJ Economic Forum staged bythe PSOJ and the JMMB on 12th of Julyunder the theme “Developing Beyond theIMF”. Presenters put forwardrecommendations for growing the Jamaicaneconomy and maintaining a sustainablepath of development after the IMFprogramme concludes at end March 2017.

MSBM wishes to extend heartiestcongratulations to Kethania Griffiths who isamong the 23 Jamaicans awarded aChevening Scholarship this year. Kethaniais a Research Assistant in the Office ofSocial Entrepreneurship, Mona School ofBusiness and Management, UWI. She willbe pursuing a MA in SocialEntrepreneurship at Goldsmith's Universityof London.

On Thursday, August 25, 2016 three staff members of MSBM were honoured for their contributions tothe School at the MSBM/Spur Tree Spices Star Awards Ceremony during MSBM's General StaffRetreat 2016 held at the Alhambra Inn in Kingston.
