From the PrincipalDear Parents

As the year draws to a close I would like to thank the P&C for their support of the school and staff this year. A close working relationship between parents and the school is vital if we are going to be successful in achieving our goals. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Conor Weule, P&C President, and Mrs Tanya van der Wall, Band President, for their leadership, advice and support given to me this year. Both lead excellent parent teams who work tirelessly to support school programs.

P&C Funds Committed To The SchoolIn 2018, the P&C allocated $60 000 to support learning and teaching programs.

We have spent $17 000 on Mathematics resources, including: maths racks to improve Kindy counting, “Think Tank” problem solving boxes, dominoes, dice, games, fraction magnets, place value cards, orienteering sets and measurement boxes.

We have used $30 000 for purchasing English resources, including: literacy boxes for Kindergarten, home readers, class sets of books to support literacy units, Extension class readers/novels, Multi Lit resources to support targeted intervention groups and big books for Early Stage 1/Stage 1 to support engagement and explicit teaching.

We have purchased new sports equipment, including: basketball hoops, netball portable posts and tennis equipment.

We have also purchased class sets of new school sport equipment to support the class teacher in the introduction of the new PDHPE syllabus for 2019.

Thanks to the P&C.

From the Principal

Suicide Prevention Parent MeetingIt was wonderful to see approx. 50 parents attend the suicide prevention parent meeting on Tuesday night. As a community, we have agreed to support a working party of staff and professionals to look at ways we can incorporate an awareness of support structures students can use, within the Child Protection scaffold currently used by staff with students.

I would like to thank Mrs Kerry Gleeson and Marika from Community Care Northern Beaches who presented to staff on their role in this space, they will be part of our working party. Finally, my thanks to Mrs Mel Stevenson and Ms Fiona Kelsall who presented from a teachers perspective.

While the meeting at times made us uneasy and uncomfortable, we are committed to doing something about the problem.

My thanks to all involved in so openly addressing this issue.

Deck The Bus With Loads Of TinselSome students from Years 3-6 had the time of their lives spreading Christmas cheer, lots of baubles and plenty of tinsel inside a Government bus. You may have the pleasure of travelling on our bus when you are out and about. They did an outstanding job.

From the Principal

Year 6 PlayCongratulations to students and our staff for putting on such a wonderful recount and retelling of a range of traditional Fairy Tales. Each class took on the challenge of rewriting a traditional tale and giving it a modern twist. They were both entertaining and wickedly funny in parts!

Bring Your Own Device BYODThe school has a policy of encouraging students to bring a mobile device to school when they enter Year 3. The policy was developed after extensive consultation with parents and endorsed by the P&C. The policy is an opt in program, parents decide if they want to provide their child with a device. Students who do not have a device will be able to use the schools computers and resources.

The philosophy behind our approach is the device is a research tool that supports, where appropriate, teacher designed learning activities. The device is not to be used for social media or web-surfing. The school has a BYOD User Contract that students must adhere to or their device privileges will be removed.

If you are considering purchasing a device for Christmas or sending an existing device for your child to use, please ensure that it meets the specifications required for it to be compliant and able to be used effectively at school.

Please refer to our school website for BYO device specifications.

Regards

Mr Greg JonesPrincipal

From the Office

Administration Hours:

8:30am - 3:15pm

Thank You Mona Vale - Christmas Gift AppealMona Vale you are awesome! Thank you to all the parents and children who have donated such generous gifts to our Christmas gift appeal. It is not too late, gifts can be delivered to the school office up to Friday 6th December.

There will be a collection point for the Christmas Gift Appeal – gifts will be going to children from Bear Cottage, Stewart House and Dalwood Spilstead.

Text And Exercise Books 2019Text and Exercise Books are ready to order online. Please go to our website – Notes and Forms/Planning for 2019. Please read the information on the website carefully. Books will be delivered to school ready for the start of the new year. Please order your books by Monday 14th January to ensure a smooth start for 2019. Any books ordered after this date will cause a delay in delivery and an additional delivery charge. Please note orders are through 2 different suppliers, ie Text Books are ordered with Dominie and Exercise Books are ordered through Five Senses.Stationery lists have also been added to the website, a few have been updated this week since the original posting. Parents please keep your children’s special novelty stationery at home. Large pencil cases, rulers that can be tied in knots and rubbers that create a puzzle are not practical and are a distraction in class.

Planning For 2019We are planning classes for 2019. If you are currently in K-Year 5 and you are leaving Mona Vale Public School please inform the office in writing as soon as possible. Please email [email protected] with your child’s name, class and the school your child is moving to next year.

Bus Passes 2019Students currently in Year 2, who hold a school bus pass, must re-apply for their bus pass for 2019. All other students who currently hold a bus pass, will be reissued a bus pass in 2019 and this pass will be sent to your home address.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, please go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

2019 - Routine Changes

Changes To Routines For 2019From Term 1 there are a few changes to routines that you need to be aware of.

Start Of School The school day will be starting 5 minutes earlier each day. This means that the first bell (the go and line up bell) will ring at 8:47am and the start of class bell will ring at 8:50am.

Break TimesCurrently, the students have a 20 minute break at recess time and 40 minute break at lunch time. In Term 1, we will be trialling a change to our break times. Recess and lunch will now both be 30 minutes in duration. There will still be a 10 minute eating period for students to eat their lunch and then students will go out to play for 30 minutes.

This initiative has been introduced for a variety of reasons, including allowing more flexibility for training/rehearsal times and as a student wellbeing measure.

Class FormationsTeachers are currently very busy forming classes for next year. Your child will find out which class they are in for 2019, on the first day back for students in Years 1 and 2, and on day 2 for those students attending the swimming carnival.

Students will start the day in their 2018 classes and will be put into their new class during the day. This is a change to the organisation that has been in place for the last few years, where students were placed into their new classes at morning lines.

Presentation Day

Presentation DayOur annual Presentation Day is taking place on Thursday 13th December. This is a day when the school community comes together to celebrate our students’ successes.

What you need to know• If your child is an award recipient you will receive an invitation to the event which includes all the relevant details but will not name the award they are receiving – it’s a surprise!• All our students will be attending the assemblies which will be held at Pittwater High School. The day will be split in to two, 3-6 in the morning and K-2 in the afternoon.• All students will be bused to and from the venue.• All students in Year 3-6, who are not receiving an award, in the Performance Band or the 2019 Leadership Team, will need to be at school by 8:30am.• The canteen will be closed on the day and we ask all students to bring their fruit break, recess and lunch in disposable containers, as some food may need to be eaten at the High School before entering the hall.• Due to space restrictions, please note that only families that receive an invitation are to attend.

Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols Christmas Carols community event is Thursday 6th December on Waratah oval. It is a wonderful event to come along and sit with friends and family and reflect on what a great year we have had at Mona Vale in 2018.

You, as the parents will be responsible for your child for the entire evening, ensuring their behaviour is respectful and responsible. Students will not be allowed to come to the event without a parent, or a responsible adult to look after them. The teachers ARE NOT on duty this evening. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard as your children’s safety is always our number one priority.

K-2 will drop their children to the K-2 Cola at 5pm and after they have performed their item there will be a pick up spot for you to collect your child.

3-6 just need to arrive at 5:00pm find a spot on the grass with their families, perhaps enjoy some snacks and await their grade to be called for their item. Grade items should run from 5:30pm-6:45pm and then we will enjoy some sing-a-long carols together. So bring your singing voices and a device as the words will all be on our website.

All students should come dressed in casual comfortable clothes with a Christmas theme. E.g. Xmas t shirts, green/red/white etc. Santa hats, reindeer ears etc.

Please see attached flyer for more information. Please keep your fingers crossed for a lovely sunny evening.

See you there at 5pm for a 5:30pm start.

Kind regards

Sport News

Congratulations to all our PSSA teams this season. It was a shame that we couldn’t end the season with a finals series.

All teams performed admirably throughout the season and there were many teams who would have made the semis. As we reverted back to the ‘first past the post’ system to determine the competition winners, the results were:

ChampionsSenior girls tagJunior boys tag

Runners UpSenior boys cricketJunior girls tagSenior boys tag

Junior and Senior Girls Cricket 4th Senior boys softball 6thJunior boys Tball 6thJunior girls Tball 4thSenior girls softball =3rdJunior boys cricket 7th

A fantastic season for all codes.

Well done to all players and coaches. We are proud of you all.

Thank you

Ethics classes at Mona Vale Public School

We urgently need new teachers. If you value our Primary Ethics program at MVPS, please

volunteer!

Kindergarten classes – Tuesdays 8.55-9.25am

Year 3 class – Tuesdays 9.25-9.55am

Year 5 class – Tuesdays 9.55-10.25am

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you know from your child’s participation last year, we have a thriving philosophical ethics program at

Mona Vale Public School (MVPS) for classes K-6. Ethics classes teach children how to evaluate evidence

and use reasoning to make decision.

Ethics classes are held during the Special Religious Education (Scripture) time each week (30 minutes)

and are available to children not enrolled in Scripture. In Primary Ethics classes, children learn how to

think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according

to blind habit or peer pressure.

We are very fortunate at MVPS to have a dedicated group of volunteers who together deliver 17 classes

each week during the Scripture/Ethics time (Tuesday mornings)! We need at least 4 new teachers to be

able to continue the program at this level.

Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved by the

NSW State Government to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a

two-day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an

interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available on

Tuesday mornings each week.

Please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact [email protected] to find out how you

can become an ethics teacher .

I look forward to hearing from you!

Michelle Eggins
