In every part of the Monadnock Region there arepeople that need or want access to communitytransportation services. Some of the demand comesfrom people who are transit dependent – peoplethat cannot drive due to age, disability, income, orother reasons. Other demands comes from peoplewho want an alternate choice to driving for reasonssuch as convenience, environmental protection, orto save money. Community transportation is used fora variety of purposes including but not limited to,trips to medical appointments, shopping, longdistance travel, entertainment and tourism.

The goal of the Monadnock Region CommunityTransportation Directory is to connect peopleseeking transportation with transportationproviders regardless of their travel needs, abilities,and location. By providing information on a widerange of transportation options in the region, wehope to better connect residents and visitors withtransportation providers and better meetcommunity transportation needs within theMonadnock Region.

INTRODUCTION

A strong, coordinated regional transportation system provides communitytransportation options that offer a number of benefits including:

QUALITY OF LIFE & HEALTH

• Creating better access to family, friends, and community activities thatimprove quality of life including education/training, health and socialservices, shopping, and entertainment .

• Connecting people, including non-drivers, to essential health and humanservices.

ENVIRONMENTAL

• Improving traffic congestion, air quality and health by reducing the amountof vehicles on the road.

• Reducing our region’s dependency on fossil fuels by providing options forgroups to travel together and reducing the number of single occupancyvehicles on the road.

ECONOMIC

• Providing affordable transportation alternatives to access daily needs.

• Enhancing local economic growth by increasing the local customer base fora range of services and connecting residents with places of employment.

TRANSPORTATION CHOICES BENEFIT US ALL

The Monadnock Region Coordinating Council (MRCC) is a coalition of transportationusers , purchasers, and providers in the Monadnock Region working to improve accessto and the affordability of regional community transportation services. The MRCCcreated this directory to share information about available transportation resources inthe Region by town and transportation service type.

COMMUNITY TRANSPORTATION is the family of transportation services in acommunity, including public and private sources, that are available to respond to themobility needs of community members including but not limited to seniors, personswith disabilities and persons with lower income.

The directory is designed to be a resource for social service agencies, human serviceproviders, transportation agencies, municipalities, and the general public. Because ofthe diverse array of users, the directory not only provides information on the servicesthemselves, but also offers tips for how to most effectively use the communitytransportation services listed.

BACKGROUNDTHE MONADNOCK REGION COORDINATING COUNCIL The MRCC monitors community

transportation in all of Cheshire County andten towns in Western Hillsborough County(Antrim, Bennington, Francestown,Greenfield, Greenville, Hancock, NewIpswich, Peterborough, Sharon, andTemple). The MRCC covers Regions 5 and 6(i.e. Cheshire and Hillsborough Counties) inthe state of NH. Together, MRCCstakeholders are working to betterunderstand and define the Region’s uniquecommunity transportation needs. TheMRCC views the coordination of communitytransportation services as an opportunity toimprove and enhance the transportationnetwork, services, and resources available inthe Region. The mission of the MRCC is toactively lead and engage the MonadnockRegion in building an innovative,coordinated, and resilient transportationnetwork.

OVERVIEW OF TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

In this “Overview of Transportation Services” sectionof the Community Transportation Directory, you willfind definitions and descriptions of the types oftransportation services provided in the region.Following the “Overview of Services” section,services will be listed by type and by town. Eachservice’s listing will include information about thetype of transportation they offer, the service area,the days and hours of operation, whether a fare isrequired, and the vehicle’s ability to accommodatewheelchair users, bicycles, and other passengerneeds.

Community transportation services are classified aseither fixed route services or demand responseservices. Fixed route services run on regularscheduled routes with fixed stops. Some fixed routeservices offer paratransit services for passengerswith mobility difficulties near routes. Demandresponse services provide passengers rides from aspecific location to another specific location at anagreed upon time. These services transportpassengers based on requests for needed rides.

INTERCITY BUS SERVICE is a public or private bus service that uses coaches to carry passengers distances between different cities ortowns. Intercity buses often connect to bus stations or hubs which allow passengers to connect to locations throughout NorthAmerica.

INTERCITY RAIL SERVICE is a rail service that uses trains to carry passengers distances between different cities or towns. The AmtrakVermonter and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority are the closest train services to the Monadnock Region.

FIXED ROUTE

DEMAND RESPONSE

LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSIT is a bus service provided on a fixed route with a fixed schedule. Anyone can ride public transit for a smallfee or donation, including persons with disabilities and seniors. There are public transit services available in Keene, Walpole, andHinsdale.

HUMAN SERVICE AGENCY PROVIDERS are organizations that provide specialized transportation services to a select group of peoplebased on criteria, such as people with disabilities or seniors. Typically, transportation is only provided to individuals enrolled in anagency’s program(s). These are demand response services, meaning they do not run on a pre-defined schedule, but instead providecurb-to-curb service using small vans or cars. Clients of Human Services Transportation Providers are typically required to request aride a day or more in advance. The services are often provided either free of charge or through reimbursements from federal andstate programs.

MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION PROVIDERS, for the purposes of this directory, are organizations and companies that provide non-emergency medical transportation and/or emergency medical transportation services. The types of medical transportationproviders can range from wheelchair transport services, which have vehicles with specialized lifts to take patients to and fromdoctor’s appointments, treatment, and therapy appointments, to ambulance transportation for emergency and nonemergencysituations.

DEFINITIONS

PRIVATE-FOR-HIRE describes, for the purposes of this directory, transportation companies that provide a range of transportationservices and vehicles for hire with prior booking for a set rate. These companies typically offer charter bus, limousine, privatesedan, and/or shuttle transportation for hire to special events and airports.

RIDESHARE is service where an individual would either use a toll free number, web-based ride board or social network to arrange aride with another individual or group of individuals interested in carpooling. Rideshare can be used for commuting to work, school,grocery shopping, social events, etc.

TAXI is a vehicle for hire, which conveys passengers between locations of their choice, without prior booking. Types of vehicles andmethods of regulation, hiring, dispatching, and negotiating payment can differ among providers.

Please note: This transportation directory is solely a listing of community transportation services identified within the Monadnock Region. It is not intended topromote or endorse one service over another. Some services may be missing from this listing and information may not be up to date. It is important to contact theprovider prior to using the service to ask any relevant questions regarding service information.

PARATRANSIT SERVICE, sometimes referred to as complementary paratransit service, is mandated under the Americans withDisabilities Act (ADA) for all public transit systems. Paratransit service must be provided within ¾ of a mile of existing public transitroutes for people with disabilities. Paratransit is a door-to-bus stop or door-to-door service provided for a small fare or donation.

The Monadnock Region currently has one intermodal transportation arealocated in Downtown Keene on Gilbo Avenue. Commuters and travelers canconnect with local transit services with Keene’s City Express. In addition, thearea is the stopping place for Greyhound Bus service with connections to placeslike Nashua, Brattleboro, VT, Bellows Falls, VT, Boston and New York City. Keene’sintermodal transportation area is also adjacent to a bike path.

To the east of the Monadnock Region, there are bus services and long termparking available at the previously mentioned facility located at 37-71 NorthSouthwood Road, just off of Exit 8 of the Everett Turnpike in Nashua. AmtrakVermonter train service is available in nearby Brattleboro, VT and Bellows Falls,VT, both of which have some nearby longer term parking options available. Thestation in Brattleboro is located at 10 Vernon Road and Bellows Falls station islocated at 54 Depot Street. The Alewife Station is a Massachusetts Bay TransitAuthority Red Line subway station in located in North Cambridge, MA. Thisstation is an intermodal transit hub that includes a multi-level parking garage,secure bicycle spaces, and a covered bus stop. The Fitchburg IntermodalTransportation Center is a passenger rail and bus station situated in downtownFitchburg, MA and provides vehicle and bicycle parking spaces for those takingthe bus or train.

There are a number of places scattered around or near the Monadnock Regionthat accommodate people wanting to park and ride in a carpool, hop on anintercity bus, or take a train. Information about bus, train and carpoolingservices associated with these park and ride lots, intermodal transportationcenter and train stations are included in later sections of the CommunityTransportation Directory.

Within the Monadnock Region, there is one 45-space park and ride lotlocated at Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area in Chesterfield located on NH9 west of Keene. In addition, the transportation service provider,Thomas Transportation, has 80 parking spots reserved at the KeeneAirport for park and ride purposes. Those who wish to use ThomasTransportation to get to major regional airports can park at the KeeneAirport for free for up to two weeks.

There are also several park and ride lots located just outside of theregion. To the east, there is a 106-space formal park and ride on NH9/US 202 in Hillsborough. The park and ride lot is located at 229-239 OldHenniker Street off of the Henniker Street Exit on NH 9/US 202. Anotherpark and ride lot that may be useful for people from the eastern part ofthe Monadnock Region is the 350-space facility located at 37-71 NorthSouthwood Road, just off of Exit 8 of the Everett Turnpike inNashua. The Nashua park and ride includes direct connections to busservices including Boston Express, Nashua Transit and Greyhound. Several park and ride lots exist just west of the Monadnock Region inVermont. This includes a 25-space lot located in Brattleboro, VT at 15Browne Court off of US 5, near Exit 3 on I-91. Further north inWestminster, VT, there is a 34-space park and ride lot located at 1389Westminster Heights Road, near Exit 5 on I-91. Both park and ride lotsare connected with bus routes operated by Connecticut RiverTransit. For more information about these and other Vermont park andride lots visit http://parkandrides.vermont.gov/. The following are tips for those who want orneed to travel by public transportation toget to work, school, errands, or other trippurposes. Public transportation in or nearthe Monadnock Region consists of localpublic transit routes (including City Expressin Keene and The Current in Hinsdale andWalpole), intercity bus services(Greyhound), and intercity rail (Amtrak).They should make taking publictransportation easier and more convenient.

1. KNOW WHERE THE BUS/TRAINSTATIONS ARE IN THE REGION.There are nearby Greyhound Bus stationslocated in downtown Keene, Nashua, andBellows Falls, VT, as well as Amtrak stationslocated in Brattleboro, VT and in BellowsFalls, VT. If you are taking the bus or train,remember to always show up a few minutesahead of time at the designated pickuplocation. No public transportation system isperfectly timed and it may take you time tofind a parking space. Consider havingsomeone drop you off at the stop to avoidparking headaches. All intercity publictransportation stations listed in thisdirectory are equipped with bicycle racks,making it easier to use a bicycle to get to thebus/train station.

2. CONSIDER PURCHASING YOURBUS/TRAIN PASS AHEAD OF TIME.While most intercity bus and rail serviceshave online ticketing systems outside theirstations, local bus transit services usuallytake exact change as payment. If possible,purchase your tickets ahead of time – it’susually less expensive. If you take local publictransit often, consider investing in a monthlybus pass to save the hassle of paying forevery ride and to save on bus fare costs.

3. KNOW YOUR SCHEDULES AND ROUTES.Bus and rail services provide maps of all theirroutes that show stops along the way and canbe accessed online, at the bus or train station,or by mobile phone. The Keene City ExpressBus System and CT River Transit’s Current BusLines display its bus schedules, routes, andstops on Google Maps to make it easier andfaster for passengers to look up where they cango by bus on any given day. To make findingbus routes easier, use Google Maps Transit tofind out which lines can take you where youneed to go. Greyhound and Amtrak bothprovide phone apps that let users book trips,access information about schedules, ticketprices, and other travel details.

As a user of community transportationservices, it is important for you toreview the following frequently askedquestions and related suggestions priorto scheduling a ride with atransportation provider. Thesequestions will help you identify the mostappropriate provider and may make iteasier to arrange for a ride.

1. ARE YOU TRAVELING BYWHEELCHAIR?If you are traveling by wheelchair, letthe transportation provider know whatyour needs are in advance. Atransportation service may not have awheelchair accessible vehicle but theymight be able to provide a ride if youare physically able to get in and out of awheelchair and into a vehicle withoutassistance. Any other assistance youmay need, such as passenger assistance,should be discussed with the providerbefore arranging for a ride.

2. DO YOU RECEIVE MEDICAID?If you are a Medicaid recipient, ask thetransportation provider if they acceptMedicaid reimbursement prior to scheduling aride. In the event that the provider doesaccept Medicaid, you should have yourMedicaid number readily available. YourMedicaid transportation is determined byyour Medicaid plan. Visit the Directory’sMedicaid Transportation page on page 18 forplan contract information.

3. ARE YOU TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN?Be sure to inform the transportation providerif you will be traveling with children. Someproviders are unable to transport children andothers will need to know exactly how muchspace you will need in the vehicle. Accordingto NH law (RSA 265:107-a), any passenger thatis less than 6 years of age and is also less than55 inches in height must be properly fastenedand secured by a federally approved car seator booster seat that is appropriate for thechild’s age and weight. The law furtherrequires that all children under age 18 mustwear a properly fastened seat belt.

Ridesharing is the sharing of vehicles by passengers to get from point A to point Band is an increasingly popular alternative to driving alone. Commuting by car orvanpool saves money by decreasing commuting costs and reduces air pollutionand traffic congestion on the road. Carpooling can also make a commute moreenjoyable or relaxing if driving responsibilities are divided between a group ofpeople. In the table below, see details about the New Hampshire RideshareProgram. Carpools can be organized throughout the state.

3. PRACTICE GOOD CAR ETIQUETTE. Try to keep yourvehicle clean and in good condition when using it forcarpooling purposes. Be punctual and courteous and agreeon waiting times if someone is late. Successful carpoolsgenerally have agreed upon rules for the radio, smoking, cartemperature, etc. to reduce commuting conflict.

1. GET ACQUAINTED FIRST.To create a successful carpool experience, makearrangements to meet prior to the first time carpoolingtogether. Determine your route and schedule. What time doyou both need to be there? What is the most efficient drivingroute to ensure everyone arrives in a timely manner?Establish pick-up and drop-off times. Where should youmeet? Many carpoolers will agree to meet at a publiclocation such as a park and ride.

2. COMMUNICATION IS KEY.Communicate with your fellow carpoolers. If you’re running afew minutes late, call them and let them know. If you aren’table to carpool on a particular day because of a scheduleconflict, give your fellow carpoolers ample notice.Communication is also important in deciding drivingresponsibilities and schedules as well as establishing amethod of reimbursing driving expenses.
