General Business

1. History of the MCoV: There is a proposal to write a History of the Monaro Club of Victoria, and to provide both printed and video versions. We are looking for Members to assist, particularly anyone with video shooting and editing expertise. We would also welcome help in sourcing equipment (camcorder, tripod, editing clobber – particularly anything that someone might be prepared to donate!). Contact Steve Kane (VP), or Phil Blake (Sec). All offers of assistance and suggestions most welcome.

2. A reminder to all members on CH plates. For all your correspondence to Paul Black address is PO BOX.5330 Clayton. 3168. For any other correspondence the usual PO address of Dandenong is applicable.

3. For any members wishing to share their stories about their Monaro, contact the committee and have your own history published on the web page.

4. The club presently has two awards for members named after two former members, Roger Jarman and Barry Methven. The committee is now endeavoring to discover more information about these two former members. If any members can assist, could they please contact the committee.

5. Recently a donation of $500 was donated to the club by Bob Currie. The purpose of this donation is to create an award in honour of his mother Jean, who generously supported the club. It is intended to decide on the outcome of this award in the next few months.

6. Website. There have been recent changes to the club website and associated software made by the webmaster Phil Sykes and agreed to by the committee at the last meeting. Briefly, the club has changed the web host and associated software from HAVI and OUR CAR CLUB to an organisation known as Wild Apricot. Hopefully this will add more security and ensure the club website is effectively and securely maintained. The new system also has advantages such as more flexibility and professional maintenance. The cost of the new system is in the order of $756 per year, more than previously

but considering what has been spent in recent months in repairing hacking attacks, should be simpler and more cost effective.

For Sale.

Chrome trims off 4 door Kingswood $200. Door trim for Sandman, left hand side. AX9 wheel trim, and door trim for HJ coupe. Steve Kane.

VN 6 cylinder cooling fan. $15. Colin.

Guest Speaker: Phil Sykes Discussion on the factory air con for HQ/HZ operation.

In its day, the GM Frigidaire system was one of the most sophisticated AC systems in the world and 40plus years later, they still work a treat. Phil displayed some of the key components, including a disassembled compressor to better illustrate how the system works. They really are a piece of automotive engineering excellence-vacuum controlled air distribution ducting, 6 cylinder rotary compressor and “constant” temperature control compared to on again/off again control as in virtually every other car. Few people would realise just how complex these systems are and why they work so well, Phil explained. Phil then went on to describe the operation. “How it works.” A heat pump with a special refrigerant gas constantly turning gas into liquid – expanding and evaporating.. Keeping a constant 32 degrees F.. The compressor is heavy cast iron, and as Phil has found in overhauling several of them, minimal wear occurring.. The system produces 42000 BTU’s, or four times the output of a typical house airconditining system.. A complete and compact loop of airconditioning. Frigidaire designed and delco adjusted to fit the HQ. Sophisticated but fits easily into the HQ.

The gas is HR12, and the compressor is the same as used in Rolls Royce and Jaguar.. Obviously very high quality. It is critical to use the correct oil. Mineral oil and the HR12 gas is the correct combination.

Meeting Closed: 9:15 PM Secretary: Phil Blake

A group of four cars (two HQs and two CVs) driven by Bryan, Russell, James, and Noel (some with the family on board) set off from the Wallen servo at 10:30 on the Thursday for Penrith. We lunched at Yarrawonga, and took a rest stop “Where the Dog sits on the Tuckerbox, five miles from Gundagai” (see photo). Paul met us at Goulburn with his magnificent HG, towed on a trailer.

After registration on arrival at the Penrith hippodrome on Friday, about 150 cars, fewer than we expected, were displayed on the Saturday, but the display featured no less than 15 HX LE coupes, being the 40th anniversary of the model. As Warren Turnbull predicted years ago, the standard of cars in all categories just seems to get better every year, and we saw some rare ones, for example, an HJ coupe with a scissor jack option and an HQ-type rear bumper without slots for a bumper jack, all documented as original. Perhaps the most interesting were the modified cars, including a lot of CV8s, some with eye-watering workmanship. Spotting other rare beasts, there was a single CV6, two HSV Coupe 4s, a couple of GTOs - and a lone HSV GTS in the car park. Also seen in the car park was an immaculate C3 big-block Corvette.

A couple of us took the opportunity to visit the spectacular views at Katoomba on Sunday, which is a “must see” for those who haven’t been there. The dinner was a change from the routine of previous years. The host Monaro Club of NSW had made it a fund-raiser for renal and cancer research, to honour members who recently died from those ailments, but nonetheless it was upbeat, with Leo Pruneau and Noel Bedford as guest speakers, focussing on the HX LE. It appears that there was a bit of a fight to prevent the last 600-odd couple bodies being slapped together as economy models (“Vacationer", perhaps?), just to get rid of them. Pruneau & Co. had different ideas, following a theme Leo had learned when in Detroit, and the result was the

The Run to the National Event at PenrithA brief account from Bryan Drummond, Russell Dustan and James Meehan

most expensive Holden ever built to that date, all of which sold, evidently surprising the skeptical GMH boardroom. A little over 600 were produced, but a couple of dozen were destroyed in a warehouse fire, so a few less than 600 actually made it to ownership, according to Leo.

On the Monday, while some MCoV members headed south for home, others left for holidays up the coast, taking advantage of already being half way there. On the way home, Russell picked up a copy of the Monaro Post (see photo).

In summary, while being a more modest event than the amazing effort in the Barossa Valley in 2014, it was a respectable meeting, well worth attending, and with a much bigger proportion of CVs than ever before.
