Initial calculations point to crowd numbers and profits similar to last year. Final profits are still being calculated, and will be announced in the next newsletter.

MESSAGE FROM NATALIE BROCK

(STUDENT WELLBEING LEADER)

What a fabulous day it was for our MMM on Sunday. The KidsMatter Student Team had there first stall at the market this year selling sensory playdough, which included oils to lower stress and to calm. Children were invited to come into the area to play with sensory playdough at any time. Mr Jarrod Kilsby from Barmera Primary came along to the market and set up a drumbeat circle next to the KidsMatter Student stall. It was great to join in with that too and anyone who wanted to have a play could sit down and have a go.

Developing ‘Social and Emotional Learners’

at Monash Primary & Preschool

The Kilsby/Vlass 6/7 class conducted role plays in their Assembly week that offered people strategies/rules for how to engage in positive play. We made sure that we included relevant examples in our role plays.

Monday’s rule: Treat others the way you’d like to be treated. This rule is simple. It is about your words and actions towards others. Ask yourself this. If people treated you the same way you treat them, do you think you would be treated respectfully?

This is powerful thinking, that empowers you to treat others kindly and respectfully.

This photo below shows some students were playing handball. When doing this role play, one of the students that were playing invited over a student who had no one to play with. That student, found it hard to respect the rules of the game and manage their emotions when they got out. The students maintained treating the student kindly, until the student changed their behaviour.

Tuesday’s rule: Have reasons for the things you say and do. All the things we say to people throughout our day are for a purpose, to communicate effectively, to learn. In the yard, our words and actions are for the purpose of playing a game, or positive interactions with our friends.

Everything you say, should be for a good reason. You might have heard something out in the yard that wasn’t kind. I wonder if the person had a good reason to make that comment. I doubt that they did.

This photo shows some students skipping. When doing this role play, some of the students were treating the student who was not as competent with the skipping rope, unkindly and disrespectfully. They made fun of how they skipped. This was clearly outlining that these students had no good reasons for what they were doing. Another student, saw that this student was having trouble and went over to help them, demonstrating good reasons for the things she was saying and doing.

Wednesday’s rule: Understand Equality vs Fairness. Often you might hear these words when you are playing out in the yard… It’s not fair! Hmmm… I wonder if it is fair? Often people feeling like they haven’t been treated fairly is what causes some problems when people are trying to play positively. Our ‘Fairness’ Role Play

(Students come in from lunch, the four of them seem quite injured). Teacher: Emily, you look like you are in pain, what happened to you? Emily: I fell over when I was running and scraped my knee.. Teacher: That’s no good. Here is a bandaid. Teacher: Raine, you look like you are in pain, what happened to you? Raine: I fell off the flying fox and sprained my ankle.. Teacher: That’s no good. Here is a bandaid. Teacher: Nadine, you look like you are in pain, what happened to you? Nadine: I was playing soccer and I broke my arm! Teacher: That’s no good. Here is a bandaid. Teacher: Melody, you look like you are in pain, what happened to you? Melody: I fell off of the playground and broke my leg in two! Teacher: That’s no good. Here is a bandaid. Melody: A bandaid?! That’s not fair. Teacher: Life’s not fair. Melody: No, but My leg was chopped in two, and I got the same sized bandage as the student who scraped her knee. Teacher: You’re right. It wasn’t fair. If it was fair I would have given you a much larger bandage than everyone else. I did show equality though, giving the same thing to everyone. Melody: Equality seems important, but we aren’t ALL the same. Everyone has different needs. Teacher: Correct. Everyone in this school is a social and emotional learner, but some students are more resilient than others. Some students manage their emotions better than others, and some students play more positively than others. Therefore, we need to understand that fairness means that sometimes we have to support each other with different things, and some people need more support. Equality can’t always be shown.

State SAPSASA Netball Congratulations to Emily who has been selected in the Division 1 Riverland SAPSASA Netball team to play in the State Carnival in Adelaide. The Carnival will be held in Week 8 of this term (June 17th-June 20th). This is the sec-ond year in a row that Emily has been selected for this team which is a fantastic achievement. This will be a

great opportunity and experience for her and we wish Emily all the best for the Carnival. Jimmy Vlassopoulos

West Adelaide Football Club Visits 6/7 Classes On Friday, May 24th, Andrew Marks and Paul Streatfield from the West Adelaide Football Club and Nick Dillon from the SANFL visited our Year 6/7 classes. The visit was broken up into two parts. The first part was a theory lesson on ‘It taking more than talent’. The key message students received from this was that to be successful in life, you need to work hard and that natural ability would only get you so far. The second part was a practical lesson, where students were taught the fundamental skills to play AFL Football (kicking, handballing etc.). The students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and gained a lot from them. A big thank you to Nick, Andrew and Paul for taking the time out of

their busy schedules to visit our school to conduct these sessions for our students.

SAPSASA Cross Country On Wednesday, May 22nd, 14 students from Monash Primary School participated in the Riverland SAPSASA Cross Coun-try Carnival, which was held at Martins Bend in Berri. The 10 year olds were required to run 2km and the 11, 12 & 13 year olds 3km. There were between 15-30 competitors in each race. The students who participated in the Carnival were:

10 year old boys- Cooper S, Jake S, Dillon M, Cody B, Kieran S, Zach H & Lincoln B

11 year old boys- Max A & Oscar M

11 year old girls- Emily R

12 year old boys- Noah M, Brayden P, Mitchell C & Dimitri H

13 year old boys- Lachlan M & Noah B

All students ran very well considering a number of them have had limited experience running long distances competitively. We had a few students place in the top 10 in their respective races:

Lachlan M 1st in the 13 year old boys event

Noah B 2nd in the 13 year old boys event (Noah was sick on the day of Cross Country, but was allowed to run the track last Friday. The time that he ran was the 2nd fastest for the 13 year old boys.)

Dillon M 3rd in the 10 year old boys event

Emily R 7th in the 11 year old girls event

Oscar M 8th in the 11 year old boys event

Congratulations to Lachlan M, Noah B & Dillon M who have been selected to represent the Riverland at the State SAPSASA Cross Country Carnival in Adelaide on Thursday, June 6th.

It was also great to see so many of our students supporting and encouraging their teammates on the day.

A big thank you to all parents who volunteered to transport students to the Carnival. This event would not have been possible without your contribution and commitment to the school community.
